Favre ball-washing continues...

Re: Favre ball-washing continues..

They could have traded him or let him go right away but they didn't and now they look really foolish and a little bit sleezy.

A) You need teams to trade with first, and that doesn't happen immediately.
B) Any GM who'd just release a name player like Favre and get nothing should be stomped, tattooed, hanged, and killed.
C) All Favre had to do was not retire. Or not re-retire two days before he was supposed to come back the first time.

Re: Favre ball-washing continues..

He had the right to come back from retirement and the Packers had the right to protect their interests. It just turns out that their interests were in Favre playing nowhere so they tried to pay him off. That is what stinks. Besides, if Favre did get released and ended up in Minnesota, well....that would have been just a whole lotta fun to watch, but anyway, the whole thing could have been a lot more civil if the Packers did not try to force him to stay retired. They could have traded him or let him go right away but they didn't and now they look really foolish and a little bit sleezy.

Yeah, it was a little sleezy, but it's not like they did that before he retired, saying, "You can keep playing, but you're going to ride the bench, and we're not going to trade or release you." They planned their TEAM around not having him, then he came back. They want to move forward with Aaron Rodgers, and they would have traded Favre immediately if he was AT ALL accomodating and didn't have the temper tantrum stigma hanging over his head.

But no, any team trading for him has to wonder if he's going to even bother showing up, so why give up anything of value? He handcuffed the trade options for the Packers, so they said, "Whatever, either take a trade or ride the bench. Your move." Sure, it sucks, but I don't blame them for not caving to a primadonna.

the NFL's career leader in almost every passing category

Yup, including interceptions. He was a great QB, don't get me wrong, but playing for a long time and building up numbers doesn't mean that right now he represents those numbers, or that they don't lie to some extent.

I personally ADORE all of the talking heads falling in love with the Jets. It will make iT SO much sweeter when they fail, yet again, with golden boy as their leader. NO MORE EXCUSES FOR THE JESTERS!

I agree. It was so offensive that it took Favre a few weeks to turn it down.
Nothing could be more offensive than watching than listening to the Monday Night Announcers last year during the Ravens game.

No, way people who actually think that the NFL's career leader in almost every passing category will succeed. Someone call the police.

NFL's career leader in almost every passing category - That's code for old and about to be washed up.

But hey, if this Farve thing don't work out for the Jets they can probably get Dan Marino pretty cheap.

Bradshaw?

Montana...na he don't play for loosers.

Elway?

Re: Favre ball-washing continues..

I don't think they handled it well, but come on... he retired officially (paperwork and everything), the team drafted two QBs to fill the need, then he says, "Eh, just kidding. You know that whole offseason plan you had? Get ready to change it because your Lord and Savior is coming back!"

Then when the team said, "Uh, actually, we'd prefer it if you stayed retired because, you know, it kinda changes the direction we want to move in," he throws a hissy fit, shocked SHOCKED that the packers didn't drop to their knees and service him for his generous offer.
.

I agree, except why not just let him go to another team? Why did they refuse that? That was an a-hole move on their part.

This makes week two that much more fun. It's gonna get some ratings (though nationally it's only on the NFL network).

That's weird. I got suckered in to First Take an hour or so ago bc I was flipping to the news and saw they were talking about the Jests. Skippy and the other guy say that the Jests were going to go 1-4 in their first 4 games.

I didn't see all of it, but I'm certain they both agreed the Jests would lose wk 2 to NE. Maybe I heard wrong?

Bayless definitely said the Jets would beat NE in week two and would go 12-4.. He was being mocked big-time by one of the other hosts (younger black guy, didn't recognize him).. Not sure what the program was, although it was on at 11:45 this morning. He also said the Jets would be the 'comeback team of the year'.. This guy is an IDIOT..

Re: Favre ball-washing continues..

The Packers are indeed the bad guys. 20 million dollar bribe? That is pretty bad...just to attempt to get a player to stop playing anywhere. That is where they shot themselves in the foot. Their relationship with Favre is now completely destroyed. They will never make another penny from him (and GB needs the money badly.) I think this realization hit them in the last couple of days and sending him to NY instead of TB was a parting FU to their once franchise QB.

Right... so I guess it was fair for Favre to play the "will he or won't he" retire card for the past three off seasons too. Then he finally does retire and wants to come back a month later after they've started prepping Rodgers to be the starter. Then he demands to be the starter or to go to a team of his choice. I think there's enough blame to go around.

No one is asking him to be their starter for the next 10 years. He's gonna possibly play only one year, make the teams millions of dollars and hopefully rub off, or rub one off, on Kellen Clemens.

I just love how several posters are trying to spin this to say the Jets are stupid for making this deal and are only worse for doing it. Face it, they are gonna be better. With every thread we create and every post we make, it just proves that we are worried.

You ever consider that they might have been trying to do Favre a favor by not allowing him to taint his legacy? A tainted legacy isn't exactly something easy for an egomaniac to come back from.

As I pointed out elsewhere, at some point, the Packers gave Lord Favre a clause that basically allows him to veto any trade by failing to show up at the new team's facilities. Thus, they cannot trade him anywhere unless he has at least some interest in playing there.

While I think Bayless is wrong, especially about the week 2 win (more likely to happen in the second meeting, I would think), there's no question that the R-A-T-S are a much better team on paper than they were last season. Coupled with a very easy schedule, the Jets could very well get to 10 wins without any really impressive victories, and 11 shouldn't shock the world.

I've posted in one of the other billion Favre threads that I don't think this is a bad move for the Jets. It helps them this year, and I didn't see Pennington or Clemens being a long term solution either, so there's really no risk.

I'll even go so far as to say this makes our week 11 matchup with New York very interesting. The Jets under Mangini have played us tougher the second game both years, and by then Favre will have gelled with his receivers and the system.

What I take exception to (and this is where the ball-washing part fits perfectly), is this notion that all of the sudden Favre, known as a gunslinger and not exactly a student of the game or the film room, is going to waltz in with no training camp to completely different system, take down the much more stabile NE Patriots in week TWO, then cruise to 12-4 and a division title.

Favre is a HOF QB, but that is a ludicrous assumption based on the asanine opinions of people who think flashy numbers (most acquired in years long past) are the keys to success.

I'm not the world but 10 or 11 Ws would absolutely shock me. I agree that all around the Jets are a better team than last year but it's easy to improve from a handfull of wins. I see 7Ws as most probable with 9 at best.

Re: Favre ball-washing continues..

Re: Favre ball-washing continues.. Yes it certainly does. As I was clicking past espn 1&2 on my way to the Weather Channel they were doing a piece on the rats and Lord Farve i didn't stop. On espn 2 I saw what looked like old video about a team with Green and Yellow uni's. This time I did stop and it was a piece on the Farve resurrecting the Packers. Most likely if i didn't move on it would have been about Lord Farve resurrecting the Rats.

I had to reread your post a few times because it sounded like you were actually going to the Weather Channel.

Have you seen the R-A-T-S' schedule? That team should win 7 games sleeping, assuming the offensive line does show improvement.

Dolphins
Patriots
Chargers
Cardinals
Bye
Bengals
Raiders
Chiefs
Bills
Rams
Patriots
Titans
Broncos
49ers
Bills
Seahawks
Dolphins

I think that's the second game vs the Jets that's on the NFL Network. Their games don't usually start until week 9 or so..........

Yah, someone posted it here. Starts with Miami. I would KILL to see Penny go there and the Phins win opening day. Ain't gonna happen though.
