OT: Great article by Gosselin on the TACKLES stat

If you haven't read this, its a great read. The tackle stat is definitely one that makes you go "HMMmmmm". Especially when you see that some teams average nearly 2 tackles per play....

Link, s'il vous plaît? ;)

Makes sense that it should have a standard empowered by the NFL.. this makes the current method pretty stupid.

Why not have one tackle awarded per play and have it equal one? If one player wraps up and another assists have .5+.5=1 or .25+.25+.25+.25=1 for a gangbang. A guy cannot get tackled more than once.

That left 781 defensive snaps that involved a tackle – and the Colts' coaching staff awarded a league-high 1,416 tackles. That's an average of 1.81 tackles per play. The Indianapolis staff awarded 891 "solo" tackles in those 781 plays. Figure that one out.

Hmmm..... Tacklegate

The only bad thing about reading an article by Rick Gosselin is that it brings home how miserable New England football journalism is in comparison. :(

I think it's just "non-Gosselin" football journalism that's the problem. There really are very, very few nationwide who come close.

That's true, but the enormous gap between Gosselin and those who are presented here as "experts" on the game (Felger!) becomes painfully apparent.

What I really admire about RG, by the way, is not just that he knows the game but that he is prepared to WORK to follow up his ideas -- he does the research and finds the numbers, rather than just shouting his opinions at the top of his voice on talk radio.

Someone did an article a few years back looking at film of a Ray Lewis game and a Brian Urlacher game where each was credited with 20+ tackles. I think the conclusion was that Lewis had made 6 and Urlacher 8 in those games.

if they change it now it will make half of the nfl, the past few years, look like HOFers

The article also gave the defensive snap count. The Pats naturally had one of the lowest, which is usually an indication of relative time of possession and ability to get off the field on third down. Pats were good at both. Flip side of that is a high offensive snap count, which could be one explanation of why the OLine may have been worn down by the end of the year. Those snaps add up.

Got to get those Bob Sanders stats pumped up I guess.

Bob Sanders? Heck try the Jets MLB Harris who totaled 170 tackles in like 10 games or something stupid like that.
