The jouney on the road to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, began today in Nyon, Switzerland when the draw was made for the 1st and 2nd Qualifying rounds in this years Champions League tournament, or the European Cup as it was known and as it should be called.:snob:
There are, in fact, 3 qualifying rounds, which will whittle down from 60 to 16, the teams who will join 16 pre-existing teams in the glamorous and lucrative group stages.
8 groups of 4 will then be made up, with the winners and runners-up of each group going forward into the knockout stages.
From then on, the 16 teams remaining will play head to head until there are only 2 teams left, who will then travel to the Eternal City of Rome to contest the final.

There isn't a lot to talk about in todays draws, with the exception maybe of a potential powderkeg match in the first round between the fiercely anti-Catholic team from N.Ireland, Linfield, who take on the extremely pro-Catholic team from Croatia, Dinamo Zagreb. Both sets of fans are not renowned for their tolerance. There are 28 teams in this draw, with the winners going into the second round draw.

Not a great deal to talk about in the second round draw either, where 14 teams await the winners from the first round. Scotland's second representative in the tournament enters here. They will play the winners of the game between the Lithuanians, Kaunas, and the Andorran's, Santa Colomo, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andorra). Let's hope they get knocked out!

The 14 winners of the second round games will go into a third qualifying draw with 18 other teams. The 16 winners of these games will then go into the group stages. Some of the teams in this round include a few of the big guns of European football, Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus.

My prediction for the final? Spain is on a high at the moment, there is the financial clout of the English teams to consider, and you can never rule out the Italians, so, after giving great thought to this question, I will go for a Barcelona V Glasgow Celtic final! :rocker:

my prediction is that Christiano Ronaldo and Real madrid will play in the final against mourinho's Milan!

I'd hate to jinx it but under Benitez we've been winners, in the final, 15 mins away from another final or quarters. Liverpool are also the #1 ranked side in Europe for this season.

Sorry to blow the horn but it's funny to me how all the "experts" on phone ins or shows cream themselves over United, Chelsea, Madrid and Barca when we've been the most consistant side for a good few years now whilst the likes of Man U, Arsenal, Madrid and Barca have fizzled out along the way.

It's only natural I guess to chose the fancy sides with lots of money such as the fickle nature of football, but Liverpool have beaten them all..

What? Liverpool haven't beaten United in years. :D

We used to all the time under Houllier, Arsenal aswell when they really were dominant but Rafa can't seem to get it right when it comes to United apart from that FA Cup win. CL we're different though and I'd fancy our chances against anyone. It still annoys me to this day when we played you lot off the park at Anfield, Keane's career ended and O'Shea nicked it at the end..

As the rest of the Premier League say, you jammy bastards :D

That's the first qualifying round over and done with. The UK teams both were knocked out, Llanelli from Wales and Linfield from N.Ireland.
Drogheda United from the Republic beat a team from Estonia over the 2 legs and now face a daunting trip to the Ukraine to face Dynamo Kiev. Good luck to them, they'll need it.
Also in the 2nd qualifying round, Scotland's second team enter the tournament and take on FBK Kaunus from Lithuania. Good luck to the Lithuanians.:D

Unlucky Drogheda go down 1.2 at home to Kiev. I hope they enjoy their trip to the Ukraine capital next week in the return leg. I don't see any shocks happening.
Scotland's second team drew 0.0 at home to the Lithuanians. :D They were awful to watch and were roundly booed off the park:rofl: With a bit of luck, Kaunas could sneek it at their home ground.

Draw was made yesterday for the 3rd qualifying round.
Liverpool will face the Belgians, Standard Liege.
Arsenal will face FC Twente from Holland, who are now managed by the hapless former England coach Steve McClaren.
If Scotland's second team go through, they will face Aalborg from Denmark.

..And sneek it they did, coming back from 0-1 down to win 2-1. Kaunas go through to the next round. As for Scotland's second team, the end of all European competition for this year. :D

One of the benefits for my team, is that an extra $4million of TV money goes into the club's coffers without even kicking a ball. But football isn't all about money. It's about going to work tomorrow, knowing that there are workmates dying inside due to their team's incompetance, and knowing that there are people like me coming in to work to make sure they don't forget it!! It's about kicking them when they are down, not taking your foot off their throats. Life is beautiful, as someone once said. It will be tomorrow when I go to work.;)

We're in danger of only having one senior midfielder fit for Liege. If thats still the case I'd like to see young Spearing get the nod over Plessis. He's been impressive so far whilst Plessis has been decent but nothing more.

Other than them my phones on Rafa..

3rd Round of qualifying games were played last night. The winners of these 2 leg matches go into the all important group stages.
From the UK, Arsenal won 2-0 away to the Dutch team FC Twente and should complete the task next week in London.
Liverpool drew 0-0 away to the Belgians, Standard Liege. SL missed a penalty and quite a few chances as well. Liverpool did not look like Liverpool last night. They should win at Anfield next week, but 0-0 is a dodgy score. Another 0-0 would see the game go to pens. If it is a score draw, SL would go through.

Must win tonight and if Liege score it could be interesting. I shall be there and even though I've been going for ages, you never stop getting that buzz going to Anfield.

Arsenal and Liverpool from the UK win last night and progress to the group stages of the competition. Liverpool struggled against a surprisingly decent Standard Liege team. A goal in the 2nd period of extra time was good enough. There will be a lot of Scousers with well chewed fingernails going to work this morning!

From the 4 pots, eight groups of 4 teams will be produced. In each group there will be one team from pot 1, one from pot 2, one from pot 3 and one from pot 4.
Each team in the group will play one another home and away.

From a Celtic point of view, I would like to avoid the English clubs in Pot 1. Real Madrid would be a magnificent draw for us. :D
From Pot 2, Roma would be fantastic. We would normally take 10 to 15 thousand fans to a decent away game in Europe. For this one I reckon we would be close to maybe 30 thousand.
Pot 4, I'd like to avoid the 2 Ukrainian teams. Aalborg from Denmark would be ok.
All will be revealed this afternoon!!

That and no voices, I can't even talk today. Gerrard played hrough the pain last night and now he's having an op today that will rule him out for a couple of weeks.

Tactics had alot to do with it last night, forced really as we had no Mascherano or Lucas to come in and allow the likes of Alonso and Stevie to have more freedom. In the system we played last night you must have quality wide men and we haven't so you saw the result. Nothing doing at all.

The full draw is as follows:http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl/news/kind=1/newsid=743094.html

It brings together again Celtic and Manchester United. I would have liked to avoided all English teams and in particular last years winners. We met them before a couple of years ago, losing 3-2 in Manchester :( and winning 1-0 in Glasgow. :D http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dHjV3YqSqeU
We also get Villarreal from Spain and Aalborg from Denmark.
We have played the Spanish team a couple of times and such is the friendship built up between the fans, they have started a Celtic Supporters fan club, coming to Glasgow once a year to see us play.
We've never played the Danes before, and it is a country I have not visited, but would really like to. Tickets for this match should be ok to get, but not for the other two, so it could be the game to travel to.
