Lord Favre considering takng the money not to play.

Here I thought the Packers were insulting him with the offer and it turns out that Favre doesn't really want to play after all. He just wants more money.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3514071

Excerpt:

"There isn't a perfect solution to this, but [Packers president] Mark Murphy is at least trying," Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder via text message on Thursday night. "We know what they want and where I stand. His solution, although awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end.''

Good for Brett. Now, Lord Favre, if you would please just sit down somewhere and shut your mouth for a while.

So it won't count against the cap....special services contract sort of thing?

So this is basically extortion money, right? "Pay me $20 million or I play for a division rival!"

Shameful all around.

History will be very unkind to Brett over this.

This whole month long act by Favre was really just a shakedown to get cash? That is pathetic.

Is this even possible?
First wouldnt it be cheaper (for one year) or better (for 2 years) to have Favre as a backup than dish out 20 million?

And how could this not be a cap violation if the Packers give Favre this money? Is this any different than saying to a player "we'll give you 5 million to play this year; then we'll pay you 5 million to retire" instead of a 10 mil salary?

I think you could ( and some team will) make an argument that by paying Favre this money, he is not playing for another team and thus it should count against the Packers total cap number.

isn't that sorty crippling his reputation with fans. Who knew Favre would be such a whiny for more money. Just ridiculous.

Bottom line, if Farve really wanted to play this season the $20 million is a motivator to play.
Didn't MMQB call Farve's place the best he's ever seen. To us, yea $$$$$, to Farve wtf is $20 million if you want to play ball.

iam more surprised at the president who is so 'scared' of favre playing for a div rival that he wants to pay him 20mil. Iam sure if BB was coach he wouldnt have let favre retired, wouldve just cut him outright and deal with him signing anywhere. As he says 'players change every year , cant control who signs where'.just like you game plan against good players just gameplan against favre. whats the big deal ?

Yesterday I heard on the radio he HAD taken the 20 mil and the DJs were blasting him for it. They called him a "piece of crap", IIRC. Then I didn't see it anywhere else and I wondered why they leapt to the conclusion he had taken the money. Now I see he just may do it.

What a hideously embarrassing end chapter to the Favre saga in Green Bay.

Dude, that's $20 Mil to ANYONE.

Maybe he can spend it on a PR campaign to teach the world how to spell his freaking last name.

Buried in the story is a very enlightening quote by Favre:

"My intentions have been to play, and with Green Bay," Favre told Werder. "They say no, so I still want to play in this division for obvious reasons, which I made clear to management. If they won't let me play in Green Bay, let me play against you. That's where I am.''

So in other words, the previous comments about 'I just want to play', 'trade me somewhere', 'want to play for a contender', etcetera, were all a bunch of BS? What exactly are the 'obvious reasons' that Favre wants to play in the division? Based on his body language in his last game, and last year's game at Chicago, it's certainly not that he loves playing in cold weather. And having the Packers call 28 other teams to attempt to trade you was just a game that you had no intention of playing in, wasting the time of those other 28 GM's and the emotions of the fans of all those other teams.

Is it simply because Favre wants revenge against the organization that after paying him hundreds of millions of dollars has the audacity to decide it is time to move on and look beyond this season? Is it because Favre has become more of a prima donna attention seeking publicity whore than all of Drew Rosenhaus's wide receiver clients combined?

At this point I really truly wish that Ted Thompson would work a deal and trade Favre's rights to a team like the Jets or Bills. Let the Pats smother him on a wet and cold miserable day, and intercept him six or eight times this year - if he has the cajones to report. If not, then let that team go after what's left of the pro-rated portion of Favre's signing bonus that's left on his existing contract.

aren't the packers a publicly owned team? soo aren't they giving the people's money away?

can we pay Peyton 20 million not to play?

And here we thought
Manny was a turkey!

Brett is L O W !

How does Favre go on and on about how much he still wants to play, and then get paid off to do the opposite?
