Report: Jets hold serious talks about Favre

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

My flag football team could hold serious talks about Favre but he already refused to talk to them, or his agent basically said, "Brett refuses to play here." So until Favre gives the Jets the OK they're not going to trade for him.

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

good. I hope they get him. He'll get outshined by Brady and his legacy will devolve while Brady's goes up even further. The Jets will massively overpay for him right as they look like they have some signs of life and totally mortgage their future on a guy who is only considered good because of his past and his length in the league. I honestly don't think he's that much better than Chad at this point.

That's insane, sorry. He might throw too many interceptions, he might not be as good as he was. But come on. Last year the guy threw for 4100 yards and 28 TDs.

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

I bet this is a phony rumor floated out there by the Packers to drum up interest. If I were to guess the outcome at this point, I bet he takes the $20m for 10 yrs deal and really retires.

Im sorry but this is pure comedy. Pennington is the easiest QB in the NFL to gameplan around and all you need it decent defensive players. Bretts year last year obliterates anything CP has ever done. Brett is a top 10 QB right now, Pennington is a bottom ten QB right now

Before last year Favre was throwing as many INTs as TDs in a terrible division. I admit I exaggerated but Favre doesn't scare me at all especially considering how much the Jets would have to give up to have him on their team.

You're being unfair to Favre. He had 2 down years after his offensive line was gutted, his receiving corp was rebuilt and his running backs turned into Samkon Gado. The year prior to this happening, Favre threw for 30 Tds and had 17 picks. Brady went for 28 and 14 that same year. Favre's 3 years prior were 32 and 21, 27 and 16, and 32 and 15.

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

Since 2002 Favre has followed up every good year with a bad one, couple that with having to learn a new offense and I think it could be a problem for his new team. Favre has never been a real "student" of the game and at this stage of his career he likely won't become one, that's why he really wants to go to the Vikings where he would have some familiarity with coaches and the offense. His new team could conceivably simplify their offense but the good teams in the NFL would figure that out, especially if they had to play his new team a 2nd time. Favre would be a definite upgrade over anyone the Jets have at QB now but it would take some time for him to get comfortable.

well from my point of view hes alot better than Chad, because to me, watching Chad is always hilarious. watching Favre isnt.

Agreed, I gotta say. Even with Favre I don't see the Jets winning more then 8-9 games anyhow. About 2 more then they would with Chad starting in my opinion.

Alright, alright, I got carried away. I still would love to see it though because even if Favre lives up to his billing the Pats still win the AFC East while the Jets wreck themselves overpaying for a very temporary solution. I still think that Favre thrived in a very weak division in a weaker conference though.

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

I realize the Packers are hoping some starting QB loses his throwing arm in a woodchipper in the next few days, but honestly, they should just trade him to the Vikes for a mid-round pick at this point.

If you really believe Aaron Rodgers is the superior QB what are you scared of? BB and Pioli had no qualms about trading Bledsoe inside the division, and he looked like he had many more years ahead of him then than Farve does now.

How easily do you think Favre could carve up the Green Bay defense? I'm thinking that Green Bay doesn't want to have to completely redo their entire playbook by sending Favre to Minnesota. And I don't think they necessarily believe Rodgers will be better than Favre this year, but they are anxious to start building their future around him. Especially if they will have one less year before he can re-sign elsewhere if Favre comes back.

Say Rodgers has three years left on his contract (I don't know anything about how long he's signed for) and Favre comes back this year, that's one less year they have to find out how good he really is. That could mean the difference between getting to his contract year and knowing whether he's a bust or not or having to take a huge gamble on whether to re-sign him or not without fully knowing what to expect. For example: Favre comes back this year and Rodgers sits out then Favre finally retires. Rodgers has an OK year the following season, and then regresses or stays the same the year after that. They would have to re-sign him to a pretty substantial contract without knowing what the hell they're getting. From an organizational standpoint that's a very risky prospect, and they could really screw themselves over long term if they don't make sure.

Rodgers has two more years left on his five-year rookie contract, and presumably Childress' staff have picked up Green Bay cuts or free agents in the past, and/or study film and coach besides.

And if the Pack are approaching the situation like you suggest, god help them, because they'll probably need to hold on to Farve well out of training camp until a suitable team's starting QB bites it, so they can get comparable value.

I still don't understand the proposed methodology of sacrificing a season (or two) to evaluate a low 1st round pick you've had for 3 years. Or, if they think he's a better QB than Farve, and Farve won't sit, why not trade him to the Vikes? You'll be playing good QBs like Brees, Manning, Brady and so on in the playoffs anyways, who cares about whatever inferior QBs are in the division.

If anything, this whole hootenanny seems to be about the Packers marketing department being scared some Wisconsin residents will start to buy #4 Vikes jerseys with their disposable income.

You can acknowledge that Favre makes Minnesota a Super Bowl contender while still wanting to give Rodgers the job as part of a long-term plan. The Bledsoe trade isn't really comparable, largely because the Pats weren't trading a great player in the twilight of his career- they were trading a good player who wasn't good enough to make the Bills the best team in the division.

Re: Report:Jets hold serious talks about Favre

He's never, ever, ever, ever going to the Jets.

All speculation at this point is just useless.

In a way I think you're right. While they don't want to "risk" improving a divisions rival in the one area they apparently are severley lacking (Jackson), I think what is at the root of this is a desire on the part of the GB FO to not see Farve demolish that shared legacy. It's worth millions, which is why they offered him so many to stay a retired Packer. I know Montana played on in KC and played well although not well enough, and everyone got over that, but he didn't shoot his way out of town to do so. The Packers FO took Brett at his word, and that was their first and most glaring miscalculation. They'd have been better served to **** on him while he was down in 2006, but for a variety of reasons (on and off field and even financially related) they choose not to. They let him basically play out his string. And given what he said in his farewell address, they had good reason to believe they'd seen his last best shot and he was toast. His defenders keep forgetting that he didn't say he couldn't play, he said he didn't want to play like a real QB has to in this era - in fact he was pretty adamant that he absolutely couldn't do that again. And he seemed to have come to the realization that to seriously contend he would have to.

He wants to go to the Vikings because they have likely assured him there will be no extensive film study or system to master. They will allow him to just sling it assuming that combined with Peterson that will constitute an offense - something Jackson cannot remotely provide for them this season if ever. Childress is on thin ice and willing to do whatever it takes to field a contender in a weak conference this season to save his own job. He's not looking long term. The only teams with any interest in Brett are in the same boat. They think they are a QB away, don't see him on their roster, and the clock is ticking on their HC's job. Childress, Mangini, Chucky (although Chucky was doing fine with Garcia once the looming Farve threat got him back on the field - until he again got hurt in non contact practice the other day...).

Meanwhile GB is trying to build long term for the post Favre era and trying to avoid this jackass obliterating his shared Packers legacy. He really put them in a bind in more ways than one. They can't really go nuclear on him damage control wise as he exits the building for that reason. Although I don't doubt you will start to hear some stories of what working with him for the last 3-4 seasons of his career has been like. His remaining legion will call that vicious sour grapes - as did the Drewpies until he proved it to be the sad truth.

Brett pretty much blamed his coaches and FO and selfish teamates he personally called out for his decline - didn't want to play through a rebuild. Had no interest in mentoring a successor. Like Drew he always had his media toadies pointing to lack of weapons or support. For double digit paychecks a QB is supposed to rise above those obstacles and elevate those around him - like Brady did for peanuts. Then the rebuild paid dividends during a weak schedule season and he got all the credit. Now he wants back in because he believes his own hype. But when he fails again it will be everyone elses fault including the suckers who take him on. On some level a number of FO's seem to have figured that out. Otherwise there would be more interest in him than there is. Taking him on you are hoping for 1 shot at catching lightening in a bottle. And enough of it to buy you cover for a year or two thereafter. If it doesn't pan out you will be out the door with him with your coaching career in dissary.

He will ultimately go to the most desperate HC unless he has an 11th hour epiphany about his legacy. It's a dicey risk reward calculation for all involved. The last place he wants to land is in the AFC, let alone the AFCE...

But hey, whether he ultimately lands in NY or just further undercuts Noodle and Clemmons and drives a bigger wedge between Mangenius and his veterans in the process, it all works for me. :D

OK, the Jets sign Favre and Pennington comes to New England as our number 2. Perfect! :)

Just trade him to the Vikes already its what he wants, the pack does not want him.. And now he is considering taking the money not to play??? all this drama for what??? That is why makes Espn sooooo special..

Again everyone says you cant trade him in the division...
