will we keep both of these guys or will one be cut?

who is gunna get the bulk of the carries this year behind Maroney?

Jordan looks like the better back to me imo.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

If Morris proves 100% healthy during Training Camp I see 0 chance he is cut even with Lamont Jordan on this team. When he played the first few games last year he was tremendous. We never were stuffed on a 3rd and 1 and he was solid on ST. I know it seems like forever a go due to Brady unspeakable second half, but before Morris went down we had a very balanced offense both Run and Pass.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

I see Sammy Morris as a guy to come in and give Maroney a breather. A change of pace back. I see Jordan as being a power back who can catch the ball out of the backfield who can sub in and out with Faulk on third downs, come in on a third down short yardage situation, or come in with Faulk in a 2 RB, 3 WR Shotgun set on third down.

I will be shocked if either is cut. Belichick will feel very safe that he'll have an NFL calibur RB all season as it's very unlikely these two and Maroney will both all hurt. Plus Jordan can backup up the receiving part of Faulk's game.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

if we can keep them both that would be sweet, i just dont want to see someone else get cut because of it, like a CB or LB. Maybe if we keep both Evans or Eckle is gone.

I just think LaMont could be deadly in this offense with his ability to catch the ball, that will neutralize the pass rush on Brady. I kinda prefer to give LaMont the bulk of the carries behind Maroney than Morris. Morris is ok but hes not something you cant find if you need to, hes a dime a dozen rb imo.

Agree. They both stay. No question.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

I prefer Sammy to LaMont Jordan. I haven't heard the greatest things about LaMont in Oakland and I was impressed by Sammy from what I saw last season. He runs hard and at times was doing better than Maroney. I think Sammy is 100% anyways.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

Barring an injury in camp, I see Evans as the one with the most potential to be cut. He isn't that great of a fullback and is a poor backup to Faulk in the passing game. Maybe Jordan can take over the limited FB duties, or they could cut that position out of their playbook. BB caters to the strengths of his personnel and I think Jordan would bring an edge to the power running game that we haven't really had since Dillon.

The real loss would be Evan's contribution to ST.

Eh, you still need A fullback. It's not easy running against a goal-line defense with no-lead blocker. Especially if there is no pure blocking tight end a la Daniel Graham. Ideally you want to run behind a lead blocker and a blocking TE. If you cut Evans, the Pats have neither. And these short-yardage situations occur every game.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

Cut Jackson, keep Jordan :D

70 catches in 2005 say that you're right.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

I expect to see

Maroney
Morris
Jordan
Faulk
Evans

as the running backs with the team coming out of camp barring injuries. There are enough young linebackers to fill the Eckel role on special teams, and I expect the team to carry 5 rbs due to recent history (Back to the Dillon era, not just beginning with Maroney) at the position.

I still see Morris getting cut unless Jordan struggles to pick up the offense or injuries. I still can't see them keeping 5 RBs.

I know people are saying it a lock that they keep 5 RBs. I can't see it ever being a lock that the Pats overload any position. There are far too many variables that play into the final 5 or so positions of the roster to ever guarantee one position will be overloaded. Odds are extra roster spots at the end of the roster will go to CB, LB, and o-line over RB at this point in the game. Any injuries in the preseason can afffect the roster.

People have also talked about how high Belichick is on Morris, but if that was the only variable in him making personnel decisions Milloy, Colvin, and McGinest would be on the roster.

I can only see both Morris and Jordan both on the roster if by some reason the Pats have extra space on roster or one of them can play FB and Evans gets cut. I only see overloading a position if it an area of weakness or you want to keep a developmental player. I don't see either being the case at RB.

I also didn't see anything out of Morris last year that Lamont Jordan hasn't done with lesser offenses. Not to take away from what Morris did, but Jordan is a better RB. That's why I think Morris will be the odd man out since they would both play the same role and Morris also has age, salary cap (his cap # is way too high to be the fourth or fifth RB), and injury concerns.

I think People are forgetting how Freaky Fast Lamont Jordan really is. I used to love him when he played for the Jets, he was the total package. The Faiders didn't pay him all that money for nothing. People are going to really like him here...the only guy who needs to worry right now is Laurence Maroney who might have more Speed but doesn't have the Speed/Power Combo of Lamont Jordan is the running game. Also Lamont has very good hands in the passing game...he caught 70 one year for Oakland. If all three are healthy the Pats are pretty set in the running game.

Rob take a deep breath and move away from the ledge...*somebody call 911 in the mean time*;) I think the Lamont Jordan signing have alot to do with Laurence Maroney...i don't think he's the kind of RB BB really likes. Maroney is not to be confused with the Power RB's BB likes. It took Maroney a while to get it going last year. This Offense really missed Sammy Morris in the short power running game after he went down with that injury. Didn't that Brady 3rd and 1 or less QB sneak got old in a hurry. Maroney wasn't that kind of back. I say they carry 4 RB's because Heath Evans sucks and won't be missed. BB is simple not taking any chances this year and i was surprised when they didn't draft a young RB. Lamont right now is better than any Rookie RB they woud have drafted.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

Morris and LoMo will rotate possessions like they did when they both were healthy. When 1 is nicked up, I see LJ being thrown in the mix. Faulk will continue his 3rd down duties.

When both are healthy, look for LJ being the 4th quarter eat the clock for Cassel/whomever back while the 1st team is basking in a 40 point lead :) That would be hard on a tired D, fresh legs...

Evens keeps his FB/ST duties. Eckel is cut.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

I think both will be kept. Morris is important as a backup to Maroney and Jordon was a steal. I don't think he is quite as good as Morris as a runner and not quite as good as Faulk in receiving, but he is close enought to both to be very usefull.

The Morris injury really hurt us last year. No need to cut one of them and possibly be right back in that situation again.

I think Jordan has a lot to do with Morris and a little to do with Maroney. Maroney exploded at the end of the season. Morris was playing the thunder role in the Thunder and Lightning combo with Maroney last year. Jordan is a far better Thunder than Morris.

If Morris is being kept around for 3rd and very short situations, then he will never be activated. If Jordan is taking over the Corey Dillon role, he will get most of the 3rd and very shorts anyway.

None of us really know for sure why Belichick added Jordan, but a 31 year old back up RB coming off a major injury is far from a lock.

Besides, the Pats gave up the running game last year because they didn't need it in many situations last year. Not because they couldn't run the ball. The year before it was because they decided to not replace Dillon who clearly showed signs of being done in 2005. I still don't see the urgency to keep 5 RBs especially since there are quality back up RBs still on the street. And by the first of September, there could be several more.

Re: LaMont Jordan vs Sammy Morris

Let's say it's 24 and 24 on offense and defense (I doubt) with three special teamers (Ghost, punter and Paxton).

Moss, Welker, Gaffney, Jackson, Washington (5)
Watson, Thomas, Spach or Pollard (3)
Brady, Cassel, O'Donnell (3)
OL (8 or 9)

They'd only be able to keep four or five RBs depending on the linemen -- What do we want more linemen or more running backs?
