Jerod Mayo moving with confidence on the field.

...a short pass in the right flat to running back LaMont Jordan, but Mayo charged into the area and hit Jordan as the ball arrived, with the pass falling incomplete. It was an example of how Mayo’s speed might be able to help the Patriots, specifically in sub packages.

Then later in the session, with the Patriots doing 11-on-11 work in the red zone, quarterback Tom Brady split running back Kevin Faulk out wide to the left side. Brady saw that Mayo was flexed out to cover Faulk and
obviously liked the matchup – a linebacker on Faulk is usually enticing. But Mayo held his ground, running with Faulk stride for stride down the sideline as Brady’s pass sailed over Faulk’s head, incomplete.

Re: Reiss 7/28

Beautiful. I'm giddy.:)

Re: Reiss 7/28

He had some good stuff - also O'Connell seems to be throwing more consistently than in minicamp. I have a feeling he'll be the #2 QB sooner than we might think. After thinking we'd move on from Cassel I'm now thinking we'll keep Cassel for a year as the backup with O'Connell replacing him next year. It's the safe way to go. We may be able to get a late pick for Gutierrez - or not.

Re: Reiss 7/28

INfo on Mayo encouraging, he sounds like he is learning fast and has all the tools.

Re: Reiss 7/28

The best the Patriots can hope to get for Cassel/Gutierrez would be a conditional 6th, and even that's a stretch.

Re: Reiss 7/28

I'd like to see the passing game click a little more, but it's understandable with Moss and Welker out. I wonder what the main issue was? Guys like Chad not knowing the plays? Something else?

I guess that's what I meant when I said "late pick"

Can't wait for the pre-season to see what Mayo can do in game action. he's got me excited though.

Bruschi said on Sirius NFL Radio the other day that when rookies come into their system they are always lost and struggle to pick up the defense. He said he was amazed how fast Mayo picked up the system and that he was making very few mental errors in the first day of camp. It didn't seem like he was just talking up the rookie, but who knows.

Personally I am excited to have him line up next to Bruschi and eventually slide into Bruschi's role of defense.

I like hearing that from bru. If this guy steps in day one of camp and looks like he isn't lost how will it be in a month after his first camp and preseason?

it's got to be a linebackers dream to be behind those three d-linemen
