Jets front office moves adversly impacting the rest of the league?

Last year the Jets raised the collective eyebrow of the League by giving into rookie holdout Darrelle Revis, giving him a contract voidable after just 4 years. That had the potential to start a trend impacting other teams, though reportedly the Bears were able to convince this year's #14 pick that such a move was just an aberration (no doubt hanging tough in negotiations, letting it be known in no uncertain terms that they were not about to cave like Mangini and Tannenbaum)

This year apparently the League is shocked by the "whopper" of a contract given to Gholston at #6.

Thank goodness the Patriots were able to trade further back away from the Jets this year, lest their willingness to give away the farm to the #6 pick have a direct impact on their previous pick at #7. I dont understand? Gholston's deal is 5 for 35 with 20 guaranteed and incentives which raise it to 50 mil in value. One jets beat writer said for him to reach those incentives he literally would have to be LT and the Jets would have to win the SB. Isnt this over reacting just a little?

If anything the raiders are far worse. They gave DMC 6 for 60 plus mil. He will be making 10 mil plus as a rookie

Quick edit gholston's deal is 40 mil not 35. Gholston was pretty much slotted the huge deal we gave him so im not sure what we could do with that.

Im crosing my fingers as well, as much as everyone thought it would be stupid for us to use a pick to get Brett Favre. IF Fave has anything resembling last year, this is a possible dangerous football team. I have read that Faneca's deal is setup so you cant cut him after year 3 and the cap hit is minimal. Even Woody's 5 for 25 is not too ridiculous although it is over valued.

The one I will never defend is 6 for 42 for Pace which blows my mind. He is a good football player and from what I have read and seen he can be very versatile, but thats Terrell Sugg, Karlos Dansby money. That contract is very bad, however im just trying to do my best to evaluate him this year so the contract does not impact my decision to heavily. I see him as a 7 sack LB who does a good job at guarding the TE and coming in run support. I also like that we can slide him inside next to Harris on certain downs.

As for Jenkins, you should read the reports every day on this guy. He has embracd being the leader of the defense, the man has made it known he is dedicated to being a 3-4 NT, he has been unblockable in practice garnering the praises of coaches and players. Nick Mangold has gotten schooled in every practice. The man has the ability but he really is showing he has the motivation to join the ranks with the games best DT's once again. A healthy Jenkins will have a tremendous impact on the D

But the Jets, if I'm not mistaken, hold the rights to sign him for an additional 3 years - and while the price right now looks outrageously high to do so, we all know that such price tags don't tend to look so high 4 years down the road (when there might not even be a salary cap)

So it still comes down to a question of whether he'll be worth the salary in 2011 - the Jets will have the choice of paying a higher amount than they normally would have if they deem him worth it - or letting the contract end at 4 years if he's not playing up to par - which is not an unfair arrangement.

At best its a "creative" contract - but the rest of the owners probably aren't too keen on such creativity no matter what.

I'm aware of that - but it's not "voidable" in the sense that Revis can leave after 4 years no matter what - if the Jets want to keep him they can, if they shell out a large amount of cash for each year.

So it's really only voidable for the Jets, making it a bit more complicated than just saying they caved and gave him a 4 year contract. Depending on what the cap level is and football economics that additional 2 years might or might not be worth it.

Maybe its helpful to think of it as a 4 year contract with a team option for 2 more years - and while those last 2 years might be on the high side, its kindof like a franchise tag at that point for 2 years, without actually using the tag.

I really hope you guys get Favre as well. I believe acquiring him will definitely signal the final page in Mangini's demise because after Favre flops in NY, both can finally get out of the NFL. Honestly, I really don't see Favre going to the Jets and being able to put up big numbers like he does in GB, except of course, a lot of interceptions. Especially in NY, where he won't have the hordes of cheese-heads supporting him no matter what, and he'll get booed and heckled mercilessly by the "lovable" fans of New York!
