Observations from 7th practice

FOXBOROUGH – Five observations from the Patriots’ seventh training camp practice, which was held this morning in full pads in the Dana-Farber Field House (due to rain in the region):

1) The Tom Brady/Randy Moss Show. This was one of those practices that would make most observers step back and appreciate the excellence of two players at the top of their game – quarterback Tom Brady and receiver Randy Moss. The Patriots were working in the red zone, 11 on 11, and the competitiveness meter was high. Brady and Moss kept clicking. At one point, when Moss was coming back to the huddle, Brady waited for him and slapped his hands because he was pleased with how things were going. Moss continues to make it look easy – he was giving cornerbacks Fernando Bryant, Terrence Wheatley and Mike Richardson fits. Meanwhile, Brady, whose work had been limited in the day's first practice, was really zinging the ball in there.

4) Belichick squirts the football. Earlier in the day, Bill Belichick noted that the Patriots would be increasing their work with situational football – such as the red-zone, third downs, and short yardage. With that in mind, it was interesting to watch Belichick approach the line of scrimmage during red-zone work and point a green water bottle at the football, before dousing it with water. It was difficult to tell if the offensive players even saw what he was doing – they were huddling up – but it appeared that Belichick was testing backup interior offensive lineman Dan Connolly and backup quarterback Matt Cassel to see if they could handle a wet ball. Connolly and Cassel passed the test, as they had a clean exchange.

I love our coach!

Part Miyagi, part Kobra Kai....

I'm seeing a Jets logo replacing the ball

Thanks, P1, for your quick twitch
putting up these links, hot off the press.

Reiss, of course, is the gold standard when it comes to
Patriots beat reporters.

Man I was standing in line waiting for this practice so now I am part annoyed to have missed the Moss Brady show and to miss the physical practice....still part happy to hear it.

That Belichick story is to funny and the picture is just as funny. The man thinks of it all.

Moss giving the CBs fits....hmmmm

is that cause moss is so good; or our CBs so bad????

I certainly hope the former and that if they develop some techniques & skills vs Moss in practice that they can play shutdown versus the lesser mortals when its real.

I love our coach too. Thank goodness this is all back. :D

The same thought went thru my head too.

At other times during camp some of them have done alright vs Moss. I think in the long run it is good, practicing vs the best will only help you.

About the Moss thing..... has anyone gotten a good look at him? Does he look like he used the offseason to strengthen his body?

Great receiver + Great quarterback =

The best in the league struggle to cover the combination of Brady and Moss 1-1 or even 2-1. Not worried about the db's based on their performance against Moss and Brady.

Now if Sam Aiken and Kevin O'Connell are lighting them up, I may worry.

You are so right. That last part would scare me to death.

Safety Antwain Spann had two interceptions in the drill, which had defensive coordinator Dean Pees saluting him on their way to the next drill in practice.

I thought he played corner. Sure enough on wiki and patriots.com.

Has he added weight? He's listed at 6' 195. A little beef and he would be as big or bigger than some of our current safeties. Might be more of a shot for a backup safety this year. A lot of competition for STs, which is always good.

Uh...I think Moss is pretty good.:p

I've seen him listed as a safety twice now in camp. It wouldn't surprise me, too. If you consider Ventrone and Slater to be WRs, then the Pats only have Meriweather and Dillard as safety backups.
