Patriots picking thru the Jets trash again.

Great move by the Pats, 1 year low risk deal, Jordan will be nice to have around for late season depth.

Faulk has no chance of being released. In addition to being a tremendous weapon as a pass catcher in a great passing offense, the qb loves to check down to him, and he is a sensational pass blocker. He also returns punts. He is a tremendous asset in many ways. He is a mortal lock to make the team.

I'm expecting nothin from this guy. He's pretty close to being done in the NFL and is this guy even close to being in shape?

Prediction (barring injury): Jordan or Eckel get walking papers sooner than later.

Jordan will make this team, he is simply too talented and would fill many rolls:
1.) Spell Maroney,
2.) Back up to Faulk on 3rd down,
3.) Goal line and inside the 10 back,
4.) In terms of running ability he is more talented than Morris and he is younger (by almost 2 yrs) and not coming off as serious an injury. Jordan had a great start last yr before getting hurt and he won't face 8 man fronts like he did in Oakland.

The more I think of it the more I like Jordan as our top back up on 1st 2 downs. See Reiss analysis and Lombardi's take here: http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/2008/07/lamont_jordan_a.html

I think it's still very much up in the air whether Jordan (or any other veteran RB the Pats could have signed) will make the team. The Pats have never really carried around a 4th RB that isn't also a FB. If Maroney, Faulk, and Morris are all healthy, Jordan won't have any role with this football team.

I think if Jordan is healthy, he'll make the team and have a role.

here we go again.

Morris spells Maroney.

2.) Back up to Faulk on 3rd down,

He can do that from the street or someone else can do it from the practice squad. A 53-man roster does not allow for a backup 3rd down back.

3.) Goal line and inside the 10 back,

See Morris, Sammy or Maroney, Laurence.

I don't see Jordan making the roster and Morris not, barring an injury. Morris is out on the field practicing - I think we can throw the whole "coming off an injury" idea out now.

Look, I've been through this discussion before. In 2006, there was a contingent on this board that wanted to keep Dillon, Maroney, Faulk, and Patrick Cobbs (in addition to Evans) on the roster. My view was that Cobbs had absolutely no chance of making the roster, unless he had some other value on special teams.

The Pats have absolutely no room to carry a fourth pure RB. Jordan is training camp depth unless one of the incumbents do something to his job.

Re: Adam Schefter reports Pats sign LaMont Jordan

Well then you're just not paying attention. I think the vast majority of Patriots fans would be TOTALLY and COMPLETELY and in all ways STUNNED if he were cut. Clutch/productive-wise, Kevin Faulk is a top 5 WEAPON on the Patriots. There's Brady, Moss, Welker, Faulk, Maroney. Period. (And on a per-play basis, it's not in that order.)

I sure would be, as well as very upset.

With this stockpiling of rb talent, the Pats could also look across the NFL landscape and find a team who loses some of their own rb once exhibition games begin. Team-x loses their #2 rb for the season in August and suddenly the Pats have a chip worthy of a draft pick.

The Pats aren't going to devote 5 gameday roster spots to running backs. That's incredibly wasteful, and since Jordan has little value on special teams, his being active will prevent a special teamer such as Alexander or Woods from being out there.

Jordan is camp depth until proven otherwise. Tell me the last time the Pats (or any NFL team) have used four different running backs (not a fullback-type like Evans) in a game. You have your starter in Maroney, your backup in Morris, and your third-down back in Faulk. Any of the former two and Evans can be used in short yardage.

Re: Adam Schefter reports Pats sign LaMont Jordan

Maroney is the team's #1 back. Faulk is the #2/3rd down back. Evans is the fullback. Jordan is likely vying with Morris for the #3 RB position, with the loser (I'd expect that to be Jordan unless Morris gets hurt again) or Eckel hitting the road..

Gotta disagree. I take this as a clear sign they will be keeping 5 RBs. As I said in a previous thread, I thought it was clear the management wanted a true RB3 who could carry the load in case Maroney & Morris were both concurrently dinged.

They found their man in Jordan.

RBs will be Maroney, Morris, Jordan, Faulk, Evans. If anyone is gone, I think it would be Evans.

I was with you right up to this point. The team does have the room, depending upon how all the special teams players shake out. Eckel could be dropped instead of Jordan if the right players are available for STs.

Then who the hell lead blocks?

It allso illustrates how the Pats or evidently not happy with the RBs they have on the roster, at least to the extent that they looking to improve.

If it wasn't for Maroney and Morris missing games last season, Eckel wouldn't have been around.

I myself have wondered that same thing as we heard about Jones, Bell, Jordan, and others. I just don't see where any of those players fit into the roster in any other capacity than training camp depth.

It is about depth and training camp competition, thus this makes a lot of sense.. imo he will take Eckel's place..

Eckel was promoted to the roster in Week 4 last year. Maroney missed Weeks 4-6 due to injury. Morris missed Weeks 7-21 due to injury.

You see what I mean? Eckel was only around when Maroney and Morris weren't able to play. If Morris and Maroney (and Faulk) are able to play, then Jordan won't be around. Eckel was the 4th RB last year (assuming Evans is the 1st FB), not the 5th. Jordan wouldn't replace Eckel this season - Morris would.

first thing that came to mind was 70 catches few years ago. hes versatile.

could be competition for anyone in that backfield or a body for preseason while competing to keep Maroney & Morris healthy

I understand what you're saying. But one thing we've seen Belioli do is stockpile the areas that get repetitive with injury. From tight end to cornerback, and now running back, when this team feels it has injury prone players in the lineup, it seems to do its best to really stock that position. Yes, it's true that the team looks for depth everywhere, but it has always appeared to me that they focus more on the areas of frequent injury than elsewhere.

That's just playing scared, though. If Evans, Morris, Faulk, and Maroney are active, then Jordan is inactive - period. I think the Pats would much rather invest a roster spot in a Slater or Ventrone or Spann who could make an impact on special teams instead of riding the bench in street clothes like Jordan. And besides, the Pats have done that in cases where there are existing injuries at the position, like Thomas missing all of camp and most of the regular season. That's when you see the Pats picking up a Marcellus Rivers (or in 2006, Walter Rasby and Chris Luzar), but I don't think you see them carrying extra veteran players at a specific position going into the regular season just because there's been a history of injuries at such position.

Jordan is good training camp depth, and I don't dispute that. If Morris, Faulk, or Maroney get injured in the preseason and are hindered going into the regular season, then Jordan is great to have around and is a good remedy to a case of the ZereoueCloudPass-itis. But anyone looking for Jordan to have any measureable role in this offense alongside a healthy Morris, Faulk, and Maroney isn't going to find it.
