Gene Mruczkowski retires, Lav Bauta re-signed

The Patriots announced this morning that veteran C/G Gene Mruczkowski has retired.

To fill Mruczkowski's roster spot, the team has re-signed Lav Bauta

I didn't see that coming.

Isn't this a good sign. Didn't a veteran retire in training camp every year we went to the Super Bowl? I know one did in 2001 and 2003. I'm not sure about 2004.

Bauta back can be read one of a couple ways, (1) Pats were so impressed by the kid they took the developmental OL back at the 1st opportunity, (2) our OL summer camp depth is SO shallow with guys on PUP and under a cloud of League action that anyone close to 300 LBS who wasn't 50% body fat would do for camp fodder.

I'll go with (2) but I wish him the best. Everyone in the press is whining about cornerbacks as the weakest link. They'll be fine. I'm more worried about depth on the OL.

I'll also go with #2, which has me wondering about this Anthony Clement guy they picked up recently - drafted last year I think and has been picked up and cut by four teams already, which doesn't bode well. But he's 320 lbs and I read somewhere that he's pretty smart, so maybe the Pats can do something with him that the other teams couldn't? Who knows.

Well projects like these guys is precisely what training camp is for. The vets simply use it to get into football shape, timing etc.

I would look into it, even if he is being a nutcase. He's an outstanding offensive lineman, and if BB took him in I'd trust their judgment.

He's 32 and a 10 year vet with 107 starts in 128 games including starting every game for the last 2 years for the Jets.

Whoops!! I got his history mixed up with Titus Adams. And I didn't get it completly right anyway:

Adams, 25, was originally selected by the New York Jets ion the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Nebraska. The 6-foot-4-inch, 305-pound defensive lineman has not played in an NFL game, but has been signed by the New York Jets (2006 training camp), New York Giants (2007 offseason), San Diego Chargers (2007 training camp) and Cincinnati Bengals (2007 practice squad). He was released by the Bengals on July 7, 2008.

In other words, shadow roster, in case of a mid-season injury and need for veteran depth. Retirement opens up another roster position with little chance of him signing elsewhere.


That's my take anyway. A guy like Mruczkowski isn't keen on training camp and two a days - nor likely playing elsehwere. If the Pats need him, he'll be there - until then he'll take it easy.
