Why all the hate for Hanson

I don;t really think that there is alot if hate here for hanson. But, The guy came in part way through the season and really didn't od very well. His net average was near the bootom (I think) and his inability to stick kicks in in the red zone was fairly consistenet.
I'd like you to tell me why I should like this guy?

because he is only a punter and BB chose him over 2 other options this offseason. You dont have to like him he is just a punter but I think BBs opinion is enough not to hate the way some on here have.

I do get sick sometimes of the Whiny ******* crybabies in here who complain about a freaking punter

Didn't we win Super Bowls with Ken Walter out there???

Spoiled rotten Boston fans kill me

That is NFL.Com's web page for punters. If you look at it, there were 5 punters ahead of Hanson who kicked 15 or fewer punts last year. Not sure how you can count them with such a small sample size. So that puts Hanson at 23 for Net Average. Not great, but not exactly horrible either.

Hanson averaged 29.5% of his punts into the red zone. Again, there were people better than him, but also worse than him.

Hanson is not a GREAT punter and I don't think anyone is saying he is. But he's not horrible either. Belichick clearly thinks he's the more competent one of several they have looked at this off-season, including Mitch Berger, Scott Player and Mike Dragosovich.

So, what you're saying is we need to bring back Ken Walter so we can win a Super Bowl?

He IS the weakest link.

Plus, when it is 3rd and short and the coach is trying to decide if he should punt or go for it, you NEVER see Hanson enthusiastically saying "Put me in there coach!". Nope. He just stands there like a schlep while Brady and the offense convert another first down with a QB sneak up the middle. See, real football players want the ball in those situations. They want to be the hero. Not Hanson.

I don't think he has ever scored a point. How can you go an entire career with that many touches and no points?

He is usually the last guy to try to tackle the returner. Being last occasionally is one thing, but this guy is consistantly last! That is just sheer lack of effort.

He has poor arm strength.

His dad won't sell me Hanson's old pickup truck.

That jim henson is really a drunk I mean who gets a BWI (boating while intoxicated).

or is that Cedric Benson

Look, I knew Cedric Benson, Cedric Benson was a friend of mine, and you're no....

Wait, sorry, that was Lloyd Bentsen

Han son>>Son of Han Solo. Any son of Han Solo is OK by me. But I'd rather have Chewbacca.

Chewie would make a nice LB he would rips the arms off a running back wookies are known to do that from time to time.......the other team will be crying let the wooki win let the wookie win

Vader as a DE wouldn't be bad either. Does force-choking count as a sack?

Last I checked he's a kicker ... just a "kicker"

How much love do they get anyways?

I am not sure if it is worth hating him but from watching him at todays 8/4 evening practice he is really bad.

Mea Culpa

Bummah! He was terrible at last Tuesday's session - inconsistent as Hell. I'd hoped it was an abberation.

I think the Pats should bring in Reggie Roby to TC ... whoops, he's dead - how about Ray Guy? No? Sean Landeta? Can we trade for Jeff Feagles? How about that Sammie Baugh guy, doesn't he still have the NFL record punting average? Maybe BB can talk him out of retirement?

When you put the D headset in helmet...

Could we designate it by a black helmet and gas-mask looking facemask that makes an iron lung noise and create....

Darth Vrabel?

"Keep chopping wood!" http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1634325

Oh, and it would be nice to have a punter who was smart enough not to kick it into the end zone. Really, guys, it's NOT THAT DIFFICULT.

It isn't? Look, it's finally time to call out one of you girly man Brits to do their duty, step forward and do the kicking job for the Pats. You guys kick the ball around all over the place over there, so just step up and get it done for the Pats. Gawd knows with Hanson back there we need it.

Mmm ... you're not kidding! Dear old John Smith didn't do so badly for a Swindon Town fullback (IIRC). Now get one of those rugby boys and give him some of the NFL's off-season strength-building methods (*cough* Todd Sauerbrun *cough*) and you'd be on to something. And every year there must be twenty or so college punters coming through. How difficult can it be to find one who doesn't shank the ball one time in four?

Last year I watched (I think it was) Florida State doing imaginative stuff with their punts. But the NFL seems dead -- the last thing special teams coaches are interested in is kicking.

I am not saying he was great last year but we picked him up midway thru the season. He could have done worse.

The guy has really good career avg. for distance.

With an offseason and training camp maybe he can turn the Distance into hang time which is more the Pats philosophy.

I think he will be more than adaquate especially when you figure we wont be punting that much.

Its not like they didn't bring in other options too. He won the compitition which I imagine was held in mini camps due to the roster limit of 80.

He really needs to focus on football and stop playing hockey with his brothers.
Maybe then he might improve his game.

I lived through Ken Walter, a punter with a broken leg is better than that guy.

But on a team where everything was pretty much perfect (up until the game that shall not be named) there wasn't a whole lot to complain about, so pick on the punting.

And as for blaming him for the SB, there was plenty of blame to go around for that.
