I know this isn't Pats related, but I read this online and thought it typified the midset of some of these spoiled athletes who don't have a clue.. Hester is holding out, even though the Bears were in negotiations to extent his contract.. Management claims it was totally surprised Hester went to this length.. Here's Hester's quote:
"You should pay me like I'm one of a kind. It's like dating a girl. When you find somebody that is real special, you're going to do whatever it takes to keep her. You might cut back on what you're giving your mom to give her. And that's how I feel they should treat me."
He's making $2.2M over four years and is a kick returner.. HELLO!! How about making a starting lineup before holding out?? What an idiot..

I'm no fan of spoiled athletes, but you have to figure that if Hester's hurt in TC, any settlement is based on his current contract. I can't think of any other KR, on or off a starting lineup, who forces opponents to kick out of bounds. That's damn good field position, guaranteed on every kickoff.

he doesnt sound like he has a clue by those comments.

but even without cracking the starting lineup he probably is their 3rd best player behind urlacher and Harris. I say that half kidding but he is not to far behind.

The thing that strikes me about his quote is that he's directly saying they should pay his teammates less in order to keep him, because he's better than them. In all of the many "pay me what I'm worth" statements from NFL players, I've never heard one acknowledge that his big contract will mean less for everybody else...let alone urge that as a desirable outcome.

I think every time we hear these quotes they are going to be ludicrous to us simply because they are millionaires crying over enough money for possibly one or two more luxury vehicles. If you can get it, fine. However, if you can't, don't say something stupid that will turn your working-class fans against you.

I think this whole trend started, though, with Ty Law and his "gotta feed my family" quote from his days as a Patriot. Ever since then, these players have been saying something along those lines.

He's a kick returner and a damn good one, but he relies just as much on the rest of his special teams as every other kick returner in the league.

I think it'll be completely insane if they were to pay him $40+ mil just on his ability as a return man; their careers fade quickly.

I do have to say he doesn't endear himself to me with outrageous and conceited statements like that, even less so when you consider the stupidity of his decision to hold out of training camp given that he has as much of a shot as anyone on that team to start at WR on opening day (not to mention if he shows he can play the position it would drastically increase his overall value).

The full quote references how he's being paid as much as players who are 6th and 7th round picks who have yet to play a snap in the NFL, and they are being paid as much as he is (445K in 08, 530K in 09) which I agree isn't fair. I know a large percentage of the population would be happy to make that kind of money, but a large percentage of the population isn't useless from a financial standpoint should they blow out their knee. The truth is Hester has outplayed his contract and wants a base salary that reflects that. I think acknowledging how the NFL salary cap system works in that you have to take from Peter to pay Paul just shows that Hester understands the business side of the game. While he is only a kick returner he's also led the Bears in touchdowns scored over the past two years and it's not like getting in the endzone is a strength of that team.

I always find it funny when people rag on a guy who is "just a special teamer." Why? Well, because I believe what Belichick does in that Special Teams is a full third of a game. And Hester plays on both the kick return and punt return units. Hester is a game changer. Much like Adam "Don't call me Pacman" Jones. As much as I hate Jones for his off-field antics, I respect what he does on the field, particularly as a punt returner. He's a game changer.

Now, should Hester and his agent be at Chicago's TC? Yes, but only to get the negotiations done. I agree that Hester has to protect himself here. But the quotes are dumb on his part.

It makes me appreciate the guys who gladly donate their time to coach my 7-year old twins all the more...

I have no problem with Hester holding out. And I'm sure the Bears lowballed him because really their is no precedent for a player of Hester's position making the kind of impact he is making.

People throw it around all the time about "so-and-so will re-define the QB position" and it's all just a load of bull****, but Hester has redefined the return man.

He is easily the most valuable player on that team and they weren't sniffing the SB two years without him.

The fact is there is no precedent for a contract for a player like him because there hasn't been a player like him (as amazing as Dante Hall was, he isn't even close to Hester).

My guess is the Bears lowballed him and are trying to give him a top "special teams" contract which means he would be getting Adam V. money which is a ******* joke.

And playing his position, any kind of injury that limits his burst/speed at all would be a huge blow, so I have no problem with him holding out from camp.

He deserves every penny he gets and more from that team.

Hester's problem isn't really with his team. His problem is with the C.B.A.. These players who are drafted in the lower rounds and pan out are kept on the cheap throughout their rookie contracts because that's the way the parties agreed to do it. Hester is correct when he complains that he's being underpaid for his work, but that's the way the system is deliberately designed. Until the busts and the underperforming players start giving back their signing bonuses and guarantees, the players don't really have anything to complain about, because teams need productive players making lesser dollars if they are to compete in a salary cap league.

frankly in my opinion and i may be in a minority here...hester is good on kick returns but also tells us how much importance other teams put on special teams. The pats for e.g have starters on special teams , how many put that emphasis. ? its as much as hester being good vs opposing teams being weak on ST. indy has constantly for e.g been bad and was no surprise when he returned one in the superbowl.

Hahaha, good point. I'm sure he's making friends with that comment. BTW, has anyone ever actually been in a situation where they spent less on their mom because of their girlfriend? wtf is that about? I mean, I don't spend money on my mom; hell, I barely live on the same continent, but if she needed money, that would sure as hell take precedent over some girlfriend that was after me for my wallet. Hester sounds like a sketchy dude.

There is no kick/punt returner who is even close to Devin Hester. He's unbelivable. But the line about how you give your Mom less gifts b/c you have a hot girlfriend was stupid. As other posters said, people are going to take that quote and apply it to his team as if he's saying other players deserve less money so he can get more.

I'm not surprised he made the comment though. Devin Hester is not a smart person and i've heard several interviews with him b/c i live in the Chicago area.

Many times i cannot even understand what he is saying.
