PUP list for Pats
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
July 24, 2008 08:41 AM

The Patriots announced that the following players will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list:

DL Jarvis Green
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis
CB Ellis Hobbs
OL Nick Kaczur
G Stephen Neal
OT Oliver Ross
LB Bo Ruud
LB Mike Vrabel
WR Wes Welker
C Ryan Wendell
DL Mike Wright

Its surprising to see Welker on the list. I figured Neal would be there considering he shoulder injury late in the season. Same with Hobbs and his injuries and Mike Wright. Not surprised to see Kaczur there.

Re: PUP List released

That is quite a list to start Training Camp with. Most of those guys should be taken off as camp progresses.

Always tough for rooks like Rudd and Ross to start on PUP. Miss a golden opportunity to get reps especially with other OL starters on PUP. With Hobbsie out the CB lineup will be interesting.

Ahhhh day one brings mild concern I am sure all kinds of speculation will follow:

Reiss clarified PUP for those that need memories refreshed as follows:

Physically unable to perform list. Most every NFL team begins the year with a few players on the "active" physically unable to perform list. What this means is that the player is not yet physically ready for practice -- either due to injury, or perhaps for not passing the team's conditioning test. The player can come off the list at any time during training camp and resume practice. This is different than the "reserve" physically unable to perform list, which knocks players out for a minimum of the first six weeks of the season.

How come Vrabel's on the list? I don't remember hearing of any injuries or surgeries.

He could have failed the conditioning run.

He could have failed the conditioning run.

Any other predictions on who failed the run? Seems like a big PUP list this year.

Will we be able to confirm who failed the conditioning run ?

BB may give some indication at the press conference...seriously - he's done it in the past.

Excellent reminder that this initial PUP list isn't really an "injury" list, just a "not practicing this morning" list. Anybody who's not on the field for any reason ends up on the list; that way, if anything happens to them (e.g. sprain an ankle racing to the lunch buffet) they're eligible for the in-season PUP.

Weird list. Never thought I would see Welker or Vrabel fail the conditioning run. Maybe it was another reason. I doubt it is because of serious injuries though.

I do agree that a lower drafted rookie failing the run is not a great way to start your career with the Patriots because it can make it very short.

I don't think there's any way Welker fails that conditioning run. Maybe Vrabel, but I can't see Welker failing that. The guy is a workout warrior.

Unexpected players on the active PUP could also be getting over the flu or something like that as well. You can't read much into it until more information becomes available.

Actually Ross is a long-time vet. He was a free agent pick-up this offseason.

He might just be a little banged up and the team doesn't need to chance it with him. He knows the offense, has great hands and quickness. I don't think training camp will make a big difference in his preparation.

I don't know about any surgeries but he was banged up with a bum shoulder for the last part of the season. It got to the point where he was hardly visible on the field, hopefully he is resting and preparing his body for the season.

First day of camp..
