A LONG article on Moss. (Although not as long as Jim McCabe's December '07 article on Wes Welker.) Here's a small taste (starting a few paragraphs in):

Much has changed for Moss since he joined the Patriots in April 2007.

At this time last year, he was entering his first training camp in New England, with his every move scrutinized. Is he running hard enough? How is his attitude? Can he still blow by defenders?

Yet as Moss prepares for the start of his second training camp with the Patriots tomorrow, those questions have dissipated, replaced by a curiosity about who he is, not necessarily what he does.

It's piqued by Moss's private nature, and lack of trust in those he doesn't know well.

Still, there are times he provides the slightest of openings to outsiders, depending on the time and location. A Moss-guided tour of his fictional alma mater, Rand University, is probably the right place to start.

very nice article. He seems like a really nice guy and he is really active in his home community especially with the kids.

And he really seems to be very happy and comfortable to be part of this team. And a happy Moss really does perform better.

Another terrific article by Reiss. Is he getting better? I loved the info about Rand university, I remember when Moss said that and I was wondering what that was about.

Ditto on Reiss. It's no wonder that he has a lot of access to Pats players and coaches like no other reporter. It's amazing how simple it really is, just report the story as is and quit looking for the negative side.

BTW- It was a good reasd on where Moss is from too.

I don't mind the occasional fluff piece, but about a guy I know nothing about, like say Ryan Wendell, or Gary Guyton, or BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Who dey?

I didn;t think his piece on Moss was a blog item or press release did you??

Think again, he has been known to report good and bad, that is what would be classified as factual writing.

I'm not saying this was a press release, what I'm saying is that he normally writes stuff that comes straight from the Patriots PR Department, in other words a positive Patriots story, or in other words, fluff.

There's nothing wrong with that, since it obviously has placed him in the good graces of the coaches and players.

Reiss is just a pigeon thuogh he has really good game analysis....the percentages of plays and that stuff is great.

But as FGS pointed out one of his stronger suits is that he doesn't feel the need to be negative just to strum up ratings and hits.

He tells it like it is when incidents come up that require a bias like with spygate last year he was pretty critical. I see no problem with him taking info from the Pats PR and turning around and giving it right to us. If the Pats are trying to say something thru the Media don't you want to hear it and feel confortable that it is exactly how they intended.

I htink people act like sports media should act like all other media and be biased and show the other side all the time. I don't think they need the same standars we are talking about entertainment and I mean football not sports media (which feel like they always need to entertain). If the media lets the sports entertain us and just reported I think alot of us would like it better but they feel it is more important to entertain the layman with their stupid schticks than to give good quality coverage to the die hard.

Reiss on the other hand is real good at giving the sport to the die hard with out much in the way.

Prior to working at the Herald, he was at Patriots Football Weekly, so he's pretty much been doing the same job for like 8-10 years now. That'd be a hell of a job, career.

Actually, now that I remember, I think it was PFW then MetroWest Daily, but I guess they had that partnership with the Herald so his blog appeared on the Herald's web site.

That's where you're wrong. In the Boston area, he's not going to get ratings or hits for negative stories, he's going to get them for positive ones. I could see if he worked for a national publication or a sports news station where you might attract fans of other teams.

Also, sports is entertainment, yes, but a form of entertainment making billions each year. Why not cover it like you would a software company, an oil company, or an airline? You telling me that you only care about TDs, nice-guy millionaires and Draft Day? I like football as much as the next guy, but I also enjoy stories of drug-addicted linemen, cheerleaders getting molested (guy can dream) and execs ripping off the gullible, or as you say "die hard," fans. I guess you can say I miss "Playmakers."

There is just so much more going on behinds the scenes, that honestly, I wish I knew even if it might paint a negative picture of the team I've cheered my whole life.

I think most of us like these scandalous, controversial stories, as long as it doesn't involve our team, because that's what keeps us talking. I mean I don't want to talk about how many times I've clicked on the Reiss' blog to see if Mayo's been signed. Just messing, fgssand.
