Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

Listen to PFW in progress.. and Tomase is moving to the Red Sox beat.. Rob Bradford is gone.. So Tomase will still work for the Herald , but not on the Pats beat.. And heard a replay of Johnthan Kraft on EEI, Tiomase as of July 12th has not apoligiezed to the Krafts..
Way more than TomASSe deserves but I'll take it as I'm not a Red Sox fan.

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

Talk about a stretch...

The Boston Herald, the authority of hard-hitting sports coverage and analysis in Boston
They were referring to sucker punches, rabbit punches, punches below the belt, stabs in the back. Like it says, they've got that sort of thing pretty well covered.

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

OK...so the short-term news here seems to be:

2 days to training camp, and "the authority of hard-hitting sports coverage and analysis in Boston" has no football reporters. Anybody curious who's going to be attempting to cover TC?

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

Any PATS fans here is interested in the job?
Given what the Herald has apparently been using for their stories (AP), I could probably write better a daily column based on the links, opinions and analysis from this site, even if I am 1500 miles away from training camp. Besides, it's not as if the Herald would mind if I borrowed a few ideas or used unconfirmed rumors as long as I filed a column each day, right?

I think if Bradford was not leaving the Herald, we still would have tommase, but for now its Karen Guriguien and a wait and see...

A guy would be a great fit would be Paul Perillo of PFW.. I know he had some Herald ties, but looks like he is entrenched at PFW..

Nobody in their right mind is going to the Herald now because the handwriting is on the wall. No job security there. And not enough cache (or established access) left to attract a young up and comer.

They really created a mess for themselves. It started when they missed the boat on Reiss and then ended up with Tomase in the wake of Felger persuing his ESPN radio pipe dream job. They compounded it when they stuck with Tomase even as Breer emerged as the far better beat reporter and blogger (and they lost him to the DMN who recognize talent). Then in the wake of you know what gate the way they handled that cluster**** with the splashy empty apology on the front and back pages while Tomase and his editors carried on as if what happened was just a little oops and no big deal pretty much cemented their transition from a trashy tabloid surrounding a once exceptional sports section to nothing but tabloid fishwrap incapable of saving itself and reduced to posting vacancies in the classifieds.

And in the end the only winner in all of this at least short term will be Tomase, whose first career screw up vaulted him from the boondocks to the Herald and whose second career screw up landed him back on his beloved beat of choice. Don't be surprised if he starts showing up on CSN and WEEI either because the old boy media network in Boston is working overtime these days recycling damaged "talent" to see that no member in good standing goes begging for work somewhere.

Hmm, let's see...so we need an experienced sports reporter with plenty of NFL contacts who'd be desperate enough to take a job at a paper that's in a very public state of disarray. And said paper has just lost some of its most prominent, opinionated voices. Gosh, that's a tough one.

yoo-hoo, Ronnnnnieee....

Anybody just hear something? Nah, must be my imagination.

Pride goeth before the fall. I don't think Wrong would even entertain that because Globe employees by and large displayed the silver spoon mentality where the tabloid was concerned.

That said it's really bizarro that we remain for now anyway a two paper town in a multi-state region with many daily's still standing and our lone HOF vote rests with a guy who is not gainfully employed by any of them...or anyone on a FT basis. I don't really understand how the HOF can justify a situation like that existing.

It wasn't just Reiss they missed the boad with. They also had Albert Breer working for them at the same time and they cut him loose in favor of Tomase as well. That's what's really sad. Now, they probably won't be able to find someone. Not that it matters since so many people have stopped reading them.

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

They did miss the boat a few times..and continue to..but now the boat is sinking AND..do you think someone really qualified would come aboard a sinking ship?? yes, Tomase is back where he needs to be..the Sox!! Now he can go back to insulting Manny and those of Red Sox nation. Will they treat him better?? I am sure...

The Inside Track girls.

The Inside Track girls.

Actually, I heard that Belichick has a restraining order against them preventing them from coming within 1000 ft of his home and any place of business.

:D

"Cut Breer loose"?

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

Good question- what actually happened with Al Breer anyway? For some unknown and totally unsubstantiated reason, I had the impression he left by choice...? No idea, but if indeed the Boston Enquirer "cut him loose" in favor of Tomasss, lol talk about something coming back to bite you:p

I really, really miss Breer's contributions on the Pats- he was one of the best analysts we had. It would be awesome news if he came back:)

Given that Breer went from the MetroWest Daily News (circulation 25,000) to the Dallas Morning News (circulation 400,000), I think it's a fair bet that it was by choice. And just a year later he jumped up to a national gig. Bert Breer is clearly one of the hottest young football writers in the business. He never actually worked for the Herald to my knowledge, but even if he had he'd be long gone by now.

(What I want to know is, who's the hiring genius at the Daily News who managed to spot then-unknown Reiss & Breer?)

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

All -

Just for clarification, here's basically what happened to Albert: the Herald was getting stories/contributions from him even after its partnership with the MetroWest had formally ended. But then the word came down that the Herald wouldn't/couldn't use his stuff any more; Albert wanted to be hired by the Herald, but they hired Rob Bradford instead. He wanted to stay here in Boston because it's where he grew up. But the Herald didn't hire him, he got the job in Dallas, and the rest is history.

And thanks to those who nominated me for the Herald gig...it's good to know I have some cheerleaders out there. Actually, I very nearly left the ProJo a couple of months ago, but I think I'm staying put for the forseeable future.

Oh, and one more tidbit: Michael Parente, who used to cover the Pats for the Woonsocket Call, has been hired by Patriots Football Weekly to take the spot vacated by Tom Casale. Mike is a friend, and I think he'll do a good job. Plus, he has something few of us in the media have these days: a secure gig.

Smyoung, thanks for the inside scoop! All news to me.

Re: Tomase era over? Herald posts Patriots beat position for hire

If this is what we can expect from your friend Michael, he may be in for a rough go - here and in Foxboro...

"For the record, Belichick’s now-infamous rebuttal to the “Spygate” allegations, in which he claims he “misinterpreted” the rules, is no less flimsy or lame than Roger Clemens’ suggestion that Andy Pettitte “misremembered” a conversation between the two of them regarding performance-enhancing drugs. Thankfully, Goodell didn’t buy it either.

The bottom line is the Patriots still haven’t admitted they did something wrong. They’ve apologized for causing a distraction, but never said they were sorry for blatantly disrespecting NFL rules. They illegally skirted the league’s attempt to maintain competitive balance for eight years, yet they won’t fess up – much like Clemens, who refuses to admit he used performance-enhancing drugs while his defense, and credibility, continues to fall apart.

Others suggest that since the Patriots allegedly gained nothing from taping the New York Jets’ signals in Week 1 – the film was confiscated in the first quarter and New England broke the game open in the second half – they really didn’t do anything wrong. Ever hear of intent? I remember an episode of “Growing Pains” where Mike Seaver planned to cheat on a test by writing the answers on the bottom of his shoes. Turns out he put so much effort into doctoring his sneakers that he ended up memorizing the answers and didn’t need to use his unorthodox cheat-sheet after all. Mike eventually got caught he when he foolishly put his feet on top of his desk, and was subsequently punished. He never cheated, but he intended to, which is no better than actually committing the crime."

I will never understand what Fred bases his hires on.
