Pats sign Bauta

The Patriots announced the signing of free-agent offensive lineman Lavdrim Bauta today. Terms of the agreement were undisclosed.

The signing of Bauta gives the Patriots 80 players on the current roster, putting them at the league limit (number includes unsigned rookies Jerod Mayo and Terrence Wheatley).

A bit from the team's press release:

Bauta, 24, was a three-year letterman for Duke before transferring to Villanova for his final collegiate season in 2006. As a senior with Villanova in 2006, Bauta started 10 games at right tackle. In 2005, Bauta started all 11 games at tackle for Duke while also being named to the ACC All-Academic Team.

So much for Seau filling that 80th spot. :D

Bauta went undrafted in 2007 but hasn't signed with any team until now.

He also has two brothers, Izzy and Imer, who are offensive linemen with Villanova, plus another brother, Luman, who played at Bucknell:

He also worked as a coach (or was going to...and probably still will):

Does this mean that maybe the focus on tackle the last two days mean that maybe Kaczur is in trouble?? I found this interesting esp with NK's sentencing today...I think it makes the right side a bit of the OL focus...

I guess so. The funny part is, when I saw that thread yesterday wondering who would fill the 80th spot, my first thought was "probably someone like Jon Doty who nobody has ever heard of." Well, I was pretty damn close. Both are tackles too!

What does that make, about 5 right tackles in camp?

A Duke guy. The Pats sure like the intelligent ones.

At least! Does this mean BB does not have confidence in either O'Callahan or Britt? Or are they injured as well and we just have not gotten the memo yet!

You need a lot of backup linemen in training camp considering there are five positions each for the ones, twos and threes and there is a lot of bumpin and bangin in the trenches.

I wouldn't consider this much more than a training camp depth and highly doubt it has anything to do with Nick Kaczur, specifically.

Signing some guy like might well mean the opposite.

If a Barry Sims or someone like that was signed, that indicates someone who would compete for a starting position.

But Lavdrim Bauta? Listed at 285 pounds at Villanova, undrafted in 2007, there is concern that he might compete for a starting right tackle position? He might compete with Jimmy Martin and Ryan Wendell for the OL spot on the practice squad, but that's it.

If the Patriots are starting Lavdrim Bauta as a rookie, then they better hope that Washington trades for the rest of the defensive ends in the division.

Knee jerk reaction, Kaczur is going to get life in prison and Neal's leg has just been amputated.

Somehow I think if Seau signed they would be able to shed a JAG to make room, heaven forbid Mark Dillard or Robert Ortiz is let go.

Relax, he's just a TC body for Warren to molest... at least, for now.

See ya later, Junior. Thanks for shooting that gap in the AFCCG.

We're a long ways to go from saying good bye to Seau. I still think he ends up on this team at some point during the season.

Blocking TE conversion.

I agree. I find it hard to believe that Lavdrim Bauta is preventing Junior Seau from signing up again. And also Seau is a Hall of Famer who can still play. I don't think he'll go quietly, ie, we'll hear something in a media report from somewhere.

If Seau joined the team as a PUP, would he count against the 80?

Yes. Players on Active/PUP count against the 80-man limit. They could theoretically place him on the Reserve/PUP at any time, bypassing the Active/PUP, but then all the rules of the Reserve/PUP would apply.

Wouldn't make sense to sign him to the reserve pup as he offers more flexability if he isn't signed and at this point in his career I think there is only one other team he would play for the Chargers and they dont seem like they have any intrest.
