NFL Power Rankings: 2008 Training Camp Edition

Another basically meaningless off-season ranking, but none the less something to discuss during the off-season anyways.

1) Patriots

The Patriots may have major question marks at CB. But with the NFL's easiest schedule, that shouldn't matter. The key is staying healthy. (JC)

Chargers should be number two with the Colts coming in third. More proof that there is an astronomical amount of Manning ballwashers working for ESPN.

I'd go

1. Cowboys

2. Patriots

3. Chargers

4. Colts

5. Giants

The only reason I think Dallas is number 1 because they added Mike Jenkins and Pacman to their secondary. This was a weak spot for them last year and we lit them up in November. Pacman is talented and I like Mike Jenkins' potential. Plus Dallas has like 11 pro bowlers.

Thanks. Something to discuss until Thursday comes!

You're right, preseason rankings aren't worth all that much, but here goes.

I look at it this way, which top ten team(s) might not belong there? I think there's too much uncertainty around the Pack, so I'd probably move them down. It's hard to get used to the Browns being a top ten anything, but I guess you can make the argument that they belong.

Which team(s) would I move into the top 10? The Eagles probably. The Saints just picked up a head case.

Which bottom ten might not belong there? I'll go out on a limb and say the Raiders might be better than advertised this year. Also, the Bungles.

As for the Giants being ranked number six, I don't know whether to feel better that we have been selected as the best team in the NFL and they can't make the top five or to feel worse for the same reason... Ummm...I've decided I feel worse...

Thanks again!

Chargers? Really?

You've been spending to much time on that board.

And BTW - You are a whole lot nicer on that board. ;)

Romo over Peyton and Brady. Not a chance, I don't care how good their secondary could be.

Has Pacman even been reinstated yet?

Have to be man. I'm a guest in their house, just like I'd expect out of any fan that visits here. However, this is MY house. I can be a pig all I want here. :D

Reason for Chargers at number 2: they own the Colts.

I hear ya, and there's nothing I love more than a good ole' Chargers/Colts beat down. I don't care who wins, cause I know one of them will loose. :)

This whole "weakest schedule" thing irritates the piss out of me.

The reason our schedule is soft is because every team in the AFC east
sucked except the Pats and the Pats play all those guys twice and themselves never.
The Pats ARE the reason those teams are considered weak.

Same thing as the "They haven't played anyone yet" excuse.
It's not the Pats fault that they handed another L to a team.

losers always have something to cry about. this will still be a tougher schedule than the one the 72 dolphins had

By definition, the only way someone in, say, the Top 5 loses w/o an upset, is by playing someone else way up there.

And you know the sked gods put those games well into the fall (um, when is it we perennially play the colts?)

You can look at that Top5, and any -- (yikes!) -- any team can just not be ready after 3 games, and start 0-3 or at least 1-2. Guess what -- they'll still be there (most likely) in December. Look at the Chargers last year.

Don't start on their injuries, btw, that's part of "one of those teams could..."

So point is, that's why power rankings are useless. One of those teams goes 0-3, and they're at 15, tops.

That's the beauty of reality... you can *hope*, you can believe you have a good shot, but in the end they're all real life football teams that have to play the games.

Sorry, I'm stating the obvious. I'll shut up and go to work.

PFnV

ps, but if there have to be power rankings, good to be #1

Cowboys first! Not with coach Bubba Philips running the show.

I have to disagree. Like most of the years in the past its Pats one Colts two. Peyton is the second best QB in the league, The chargers three biggest offensive weapons are all coming off pretty significant injuries, the colts have shown they can win the big one, and the real kicker is Norv.

Sorry but until Norv and the Chargers prove they can get it done they are behind the Colts.

You can say similar things about the Cowboys too.

Nice post. I'll stay away from Manning being #2, but I'll say

Pats
Colts
Boys
Chargers

Until the Pats are slowed down, that SB loss was an aberration, so they start out on top. Rivers still has not convinced me, and as noted, they have their 3 main cogs coming off injury, not to mention losing their back up RB (Michael Turner). Chambers was a nice addition, but how many years has he been around?

As for Chargers "owning" the Colts, I guess I tend to disagree, only in as much as our recent contests with them have all been down to the wire. The game in SD last year was a tough loss, as you never expect a HOF kicker to miss a chip shot. The Playoff game was ours early, but missed opportunities doomed us. I don't fear the Chargers, and I see a runaway win by the Colts this season.
