Who is the 'sleeper' player this season - There is at least ALWAYS one

In 2007 it was Wes Welker who many thought would be more of a KR than as an integral part of the passing game.

In 2006 it was Jabar Gaffney who put enough punch into the offense to propel the Patriots to the title game.

Who is the sleeper this season on this team?

(For those who do not understand what a 'sleeper' player is,its a guy who no one really pays attention to and does not stand out on the team but yet has a year where you could say he was the difference maker between winning and losing in more than just a few games)


I am going with David Thomas who I think no one really talks about but if he is healthy he has the sure fire hands to catch anything Brady throws at him and I think he will be a big reason why this team will win some games this season that they might have lost without him.

Thomas is a good pick, though a little predictable. I'll say Hobson, I think he and Mayo will each play more than Bruschi this year.

And a non player has to be Dom Capers, bringing his knowledge of the zone blitz 3-4 into a more traditional 3-4.

Tank Williams. His versatility will be welcomed (ss, s/lb hybrid type) and is good Rodney insurance. He is on a one year, prove it to me contract. IIRC our first super bowl team had a lot of guys on those types of deals.

I think if Maroney can stay healthy he will have a big year.

Also I think Sanders will continue his steady play at Safety and hope the Pats sign him to an extension. He may not be Ronnie Lott but he can play either Safety position and special teams.

After February's debacle, BB's camp is probably more no-nonsense than ever. Any player sleeping will probably be CUT to set an example.

I agree 100% with Dave Thomas. I think if he is healthy he is going to be a killer in this offense. He might not put up big numbers, but I predict he will be CLUTCH and keep drives alive will crucial third-down catches.

I also like the Tank Williams prediction. I could see him being the vet heir apparent to Rodney. He's a 27 year-old vet who could be entering the prime of his career in the NE system. If he pans out, the torch could be passed from Rodney and SS will be set for the next few years.

Victor Hobson. I think he's going to give the Pats good tough veteran play they havent had in the middle since their last super bowl win. I'm not too worried about him being clueless, he comes from nearly the same defense. I just think his versatility will help make him a key player possibly, but mostly on the inside.

If you did, you are either a psychic or lying that you did think this.

Wes was looked at like a nice KR with an upside of being a dangerous 3rd and long receiver - No one,including me expecting much more,especially in his first season as a Patriot.

My sleeper pick would have to be Crable. I think he could come in and win a role as a pass rush LBer and that will allow him to get some sacks where some might expect he rides the pine learning the position and playing STs.

Probably the first true sleeper mentioned. Everyone else comes with at least some expectations.

I don't think anyone predicted his final production but I think nearly everyone expected him to exceed the 67 catches and 700 yards he put up playing the slot with no QB in Miami. To each their own but I personally would not consider a guy you expect in excess of 70 catches and 700 yards from a sleeper.
