O.K. Training camp is very close by and my annual "What player will surprise everyone by getting cut" thread is back.

You are guarandamnteed best be sure at least one player getting cut will be a shocker,so who will it be?

I will vote for shocker cut player to be ..... Heath Evans

Yours??? (BTW: No Tom Brady or Richard Seymour or other top player ****** smartass answers O.K.?)

Wildcard Possibilities...
Izzo...older, slower and challenged by many younger cannon fodder bodies
Kaczur...runs afowl of John Law agin
Harrison...ages suddenly and becomes too pricey for his contribution
Cassell...like, would this really be a surprise?
Chad Jackson...injury settlement...(Patsfans loses 400 Thread topics in 2008 & folds)

Interesting topic.

I think I'd agree with Izzo.

I agree that Izzo may be a lock cut but not really a shock.

IMO this is one of the bigger battles in camp. Evans vs Eckel. I doubt we Carry five RBs and the extra FB is the easy one out. Both are good STers and both hold onto the ball pretty good for FBs.

Heath is also a receiving option. last year i remember him splitting and hauling in a key first down 16 yrd catch. not sure i trust eckel receiving skills.Heath lined up quite a few times as TE due to his receving skills.

Eckel i am not sure lined up as a blocking FB many times .he played RB late in games not a blocking FB and never as a blocking TE with a few catches thrown his way.

Eckel will be the cut if its between those two....Evans wouldnt last 2 minutes through waivers, eckel would.

alexander or woods is my pick for the cut one

No one cut will be a shock to anyone. Unless you are picking a name off this list, you aren't naming a shocking cut.

Richard Seymour *DL
Ty Warren *DL
Vince Wilfork *DL
Mike Wright *DL
Jarvis Green *DL
Adalius Thomas *LB
Mike Vrabel *LB
Tedy Bruschi *LB
Victor Hobson *LB
Jerod Mayo *LB
Terrence Wheatley *CB
Jonathan Wilhite *CB
Fernando Bryant *CB
Ellis Hobbs III *CB
James Sanders *S
Rodney Harrison *S
Brandon Meriweather*S
Kevin O'Connell *QB
Tom Brady *QB
Kevin Faulk *RB
Laurence Maroney *RB
Sammy Morris *RB
Logan Mankins *G
Stephen Neal *G
Dan Koppen *C
Ryan O'Callaghan *T
Matt Light *T
David Thomas *TE
Benjamin Watson *TE
Kelley Washington *WR
Wes Welker *WR
Jabar Gaffney *WR
Chad Jackson *WR
Randy Moss *WR
Stephen Gostkowski*K

From a playing standpoint Kaczur would be on the list but with his off the field incidents it would not be a shock if he went.

If CJax got cut we would have to create a whole new forum to store the barrage of threads started relating to the topic.

I think Izzo has a chance to be cut with all the STers they brought in this year. It would be a shock though because he is a captain and he's been a leader of that group for so long.

If he gets cut, this forum will want BB and SP fired immediately. That is how popular he is here.

I think there could be a shocker cut at RB. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see either Sammy Morris or Kevin Faulk cut if the Pats pick up one of the bigger name back out there right now. I know a lot of people would be shocked though.

I don't think Izzo will get cut. He is still productive on special teams and doesn't count all that much against the cap. I don't know if this team is loaded with top notch special teams specialists or young guys who need to developed and only play special teams that there wouldn't be a spot for Izzo. For some reason, people have been predicting his demise for years.

One off the wall wild card, I wouldn't be totally shocked to see Bruschi decide to hang it up by the end of the preseason. He clearly has lost a step and really should be a situational guy/back up at this point. If both Mayo and Hobson can win the starting spots in camp and Seau returns, Bruschi may decide he would rather call it a career than to be a specialist and just come in on running downs. It is doubtful it will happen because Bruschi's desire to win one last championship will probably superseed his lack of desire to be a role player, but I don't think it would be totally crazy if he did.

You obviously don't know what the hell your talking about. BRUSCHI really?? I do think it would be totally crazy if he did (unless the unthinkable happened and his heart problem resurfaced). He made his decision months ago and if you know anything about the man than you know he is totally comitted to this team this season and nothing will stop that especially not a reduced role.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY KEVIN FAULK GETS CUT.

This is a meme that floats out at least once the last few years. He is one of our BEST weapons on offense. He is, on a play-by-play basis, one of the Patriots most productive players. I understand this thread is about "shocking" cuts, but this goes beyond that, making a beeline toward impossible.

Commitment can only take you so far, though. A reduced role would not prompt Bruschi to retire, but I honestly think that if Bruschi felt that for some reason the team would be better off without him--unlikely, but theoretically possible--then he might.

In any case, I put the odds of that happening at <<10%.

The premise is even more unlikely when you have to add the caveat "if they sign someone else" in July.

You are right that Evans would appear to have the leg up especially as a recieving option. But don't forget that Eckel is someone BB persumably is high on. He wasn't happy to lose him a few years ago and brought him back once he was available. Remember when we lost Eckel the first time we didn't think any would claim him because he was only cleared by the navy to play in the boston area where he was close to his base.

Also I don't think Eckel was ever really given a chance to be the true FB last year as we got him back a few weeks into the season. This training camp he will get a fair chance to show who is the better FB.

Didn't we get Evans off waivers in the middle of the season a few years back???

If CJax gets cut should we "take a flyer" on him :)

for the Vet minimum of course

Bizarro post of the month. Did the universe just fold over on itself?

I said it was doubtful, but not a total shocker. Sometimes a player when he starts to decline which Bruschi clearly has, they quickly decline into a marginal back up type of player. If that happens to Bruschi, his pride could come into effect and not want to embarrass himself rather than coming back. Many players do choose to come back and make a mockery of their career eventhough they really don't have anything left and many decide to hang up the cleats. Hopefully, Bruschi never gets to the point where he is forced to make that decision, but it could come as soon as this year. The guy is 35 years old and on the decline. We aren't talking about a guy who is 30.

You obviously don't understand the meaning of "off the wall wild card". Since you didn't grasp the meaning, let me education you. Of the wall means crazy, unlikely to happen.

People told me I didn't know what I was talking about this past February when I said Colvin was a likely cut either.

I agree. I can sort of see the argument with Izzo, since he's basically only in on ST plays, but Faulk simply brings too much to the table to be cut unless the Pats find a player who has a superior version of Faulk's skill set--and I don't think such a player exists at a salary the Pats can afford right now.
