In an AP story primarily about his offseason work helping at-risk children in his hometown of Oklahoma City, Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker had some unkind things to say about cornerback Asante Samuel, who left the Pats as a free agent to join the Philadelphia Eagles:

"Asante's a great player, so it hurts not to have a guy like that. But then again, it's part of the business of the game. He chose money over championships, and that’s the way it goes sometimes."

I love Welker. He is definitely one of my favorite players now.

But he needs to keep his mouth shut on this. How many rings does Welker have?

Wait until you win a Super Bowl before saying that crap.

Please tell me why this is any different than what MANY MANY people on here said about Asante? None of us have rings.

And, honestly, Welker is right. The Pats were offering damn good money to Asante and he walked. Just like his mentor, Ty Law. How many rings did Ty get after he left the Pats. In fact, I think that only Klecko has gotten a ring with another team after being with the Pats since 2003.

we don't play in the NFL, nobody cares what we say.

Welker didn't win a ring. I hope he does soon though.

I just think it looks bad saying that and as an NFL player who hasn't won a Superbowl, he shouldn't be talking like that.

i obviously hope that Welker is right though.

Why does it matter whether Welker has a ring...he is not the one making the choice hear. Asante has the ring and Asante made the choice.

If Merriweather or LeKevin Smith said it would any of you have a problem with it?

I think Welker could have dropped the last two words, but I also think he's saying he expects to wearing a ring or two as a Patriot. Also, after last year, he's earned the right to say what he wants, ring or no ring, he's was one of the reasons the Patriots had the year they did.

IMO the only people who shuold be mad about the comment are those who play for and those who follow the Eagles. Because what the comments says is you don't have a chance to win a ring there.

Personally, yes !

They haven't contributed anywhere as much as Welker has, in just one year as a Patriot. Welker put everything he had into each catch and at times I thought he was going to get crushed. Defenses know what he can do and try and knock him around to disrupt his timing, remember the end of the Colts game, he was one angry dude !

Who's "Merriweather?"

Is he related to "Mahoney?"

Very true, if the Patriots end up in the SB, I hope the Eagles aren't standing on the other side of the field, if that's the case, that quote could come back and bite him in the butt. Also, don't think it'll be forgotten, the Media will remember and it'll be all over the place.

I like Welkers confidence in his statement and I also like the fact that he feels strongly enough about his position on the team to talk about the Asante situation.

I think what Welker said what Factually correct and for that he's in the clear. There is no mistaking that fact that Asante chose money, and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that - He needs to do what's right for his family and himself. I wish him luck, unless he lines up against the Patriots and in that case I hope he and his new team looses big.

Asante had the flippin championship in his hands and let it go...

Can't blame a guy for moving to get a better job. EVERYONE else in this country does the same thing.

Not quite....some kicker that will end up in our Hall of Fame also has a ring with another team.

And how can he forget Dexter Reid. The greatest safety of all time.

Greg Spires too or am I going back to far. Its tough becuase not to many teams other than us have won it.

Dumb comment by Welker. Asante has played on a championship team, Welker hasn't. Asante knows more about it than Welker. Welker should have kept his mouth shut on it.

I agree 100%. We haven't won any more championships than Philly recently.
