I don't see any reason to be happy about 180 locals losing their jobs. Its actually somewhat sad. Heck, I don't even want Tomasse to lose his job, only see some sort of accoutability (suspension, reassignment, something). If anything this news makes me want to end the Boycott.

Agree with most of the posters above--the only Herald employees I want to see laid off are those that were responsible, editorially, for the Hack's hatchet job (including the Hack himself).

its not the only reason , i think most educated people realize that, that said, every little bit helps, fabricating stories and letting them stand for months to me is a act that cannot be forgiven, if you produce trash you need to expect the fall out,lets not get carried away with all this loosing the jobs stuff, unfortunately that happens in life, i guess if the colts or jets were loosing money, and laying off people, we'd feel sorry for them??? give me a break!

Well, it's funny that the Globe, while losing 10% ad revenue, is not having to lay anyone off and the Herald is.

In fact, things have gotton so desperate for the Herald, that the owner sold off their land to some developers and went hat in hand to the Globe publishers to see if they would also publish the Herald.

After being laughed out of there, they are considering publishing the paper 90minutes away at an existing publishing plant.

Maybe the boycott isn't hurting them and maybe it is. Either way, those of us that are banning them should continue to do so until those lousy editors and fat boy are fired. If they had done that from the beginning, we wouldn't be boycotting them.

As for the innocent employees being laid off, we are not responsible for their job loss.... the idiots that screwed up and especially those that refuse to fire the screw-offs are the ones responsible.

For those of you lecturing us (not you Pujo), stop blaming us and put the blame where it belongs.

The Herald is a rag, and that's why they're hurting. Their Spygate coverage is a part of that, but only a small part; there's just not enough market for a NY Post-like newspaper in Boston. People are tuning out on their own. However, a boycott that nobody knows about, save a few people on a messageboard, cannot affect a thing.

I said it before and I'll say it again - I feel sorry for the employees without bylines. They will feel the brunt of this blow through no fault of their own. But there will be more to come. Purcell isn't an independently wealthy man, just a former favored employee of Murdock who was offered a shot at being a publisher in his own right provided he could salvage a second tier tabloid in a major market. It was always a longshot and Purcell's short sighted plan to compete with the Globe by becoming it's antithesis is not panning out in part because he's a native New Yorker who didn't grasp this market. The Herald always had the format, what it's increasingly lacked under his watch is content. It's basically a dozen pages of spewing bile sandwiched around endless pages of ads enveloped in a sleezy tabloid front and back page cover. Fishwrap.

When he/Murdock came aboard it wasn't nearly that bad and at the least had the better sports department. That alone could have kept it afloat, but Purcell encouraged it to follow his NY'ers fascination with the tabloid blueprint too. And that was a real shame considering the sports crazed BUT increasingly successful market he found himself living in. That crap only works when you are pandering to the gossip loving fellowship of the miserable audience, and their ranks have been noticably diminished hereabouts by the big three pro sports cumulative performances over the last several seasons. It's tough to be miserable when you live in Titletown, USA.

Then of course there is the whole backlash of increasingly ending up on the wrong side of the fence in the shifting political climate problem...so both of their bread and butter approaches are falling on increasingly deaf not to mention pissed off ears.

Oh well. Good luck developing the Herald Square project in this economy and a down RE market. Flat out of assets now. The next round will hopefully lop off a callously divisive talking head, maybe a fat ass wannabe and possibly the miserable midget in the process. The Commonwealth will somehow muddle on without them.

What are you talkign about? The Globe has already been getting rid of people left and right - and big salaried people at that like Jackie Macmullen, Gordon Edes, and writers in other departments..
