I'm sure there are a lot of athletes out there doing good but it's always refreshing to read these type of stories. I wish these type of stories would get more coverage, but sadly negative sells.

SHEPPARD, GAFFNEY PROVIDE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

As the NFL news cycle is bogged down with stories of champagne wishes and cold-****ed dreams, there’s still hope.

A little.

Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard and Patriots receiver Jabar Gaffney headlined a one-day fitness clinic in their hometown of Jacksonville on Saturday.

And, unlike other summer camps featuring pro football players, which carry a stiff fee, this one was free.

Kudos to Sheppard and Gaffney. Let’s hope that more NFL players choose to use their down time providing something to others for free.

Other than champagne.

True...I agree...negativity is always larger...Hats off to both!!

I hope that Sheppard and Gaffney are teammates really soon, hehe.

I can hear Gaffney now......"Pssst, Lito, hey Lito - they got banners there, all kinds of banners, red sox, celtics and of course many many Patriots ones - you ought to check your ego at the door and come and get yourself the one thing your career needs.

Just ask Allen, Garnet or those Patriot players remaining from '05 or all those current Patriots like me itching to get ours."

it is only prob 5% of nfl players that get in trouble with the law, but the media blows up those stories so it seems like it is most of the league

that's because Gaffney is frickin' awesome.

I'm so glad we have him.

It is good to give!

It is always nice to hear these stories, good for Gaffney and Shepard.

The Eagles would never trade him to the Pats though, at least not without a steep pricetag. To them a young corner like Sheppard signed to a cheap below market price is way too valuable.

I might even guess that it is lower than that but nothing sells in the media like a negative story.

I remember last year there was a lot of speculation over whether the Pats would cut Gaffney or Caldwell. I was listening to a BB press conference and he called Gaffney "Gaff". I knew right then if it came down to the two, Caldwell was toast. When BB bestows a nickname, the guy is a keeper.

That makes a little sense.....Have you noticed that as a trend or it did it just stand out in this instance???

I wouldn't make any bets based on it but it isn't a bad thing to make a guess from.

It just stood out. I'm not even sure he's used nicknames with any other player, come to think of it.

That's really funny. I'd like to know what other nicknames BB has for his players.

Anyway, I was just scouring through some old "Reiss' Pieces" blog entries and found out that Gaffney and Shepherd are cousins. It came up when discussing the ramifications of Asante signing a huge contract with the Eagles - Shepherd gets disgruntled over the lopsided contracts, wants to be traded and maybe the Pats get in on the bidding for his services. Boy is Mike Reiss clairvoyant or what? :)

It just seemed unusual to me...I was all, "Hey, he called him Gaff, awesome!" And then like a dork I started calling him Gaff too. See, I just couldn't imagine feeling so fondly of someone that you would use a nickname and then cutting him. So I always knew Gaff would be safe.

Reche, on the other hand.....

Gaffney has definitely impressed me when he essentially send Stallworth to the bench. I am glad he is still on the team.

Bella's right! BB calling him Gaf was kinda telling, wasn't it lol. When I heard it I remember thinking it sounded sort of... "comfortable" lol;)

Nice story, thank you for posting it :)
