Schilling's career over

On D&C this morning Schilling indicated that he is going to have a radical shoulder reconstruction surguery on Monday, and that he is definately done for at least a year, and most likley his career.

He indicated that he might try to pull a Clemens, for the second half on next year, but that he was realistically looking at the end.

He will find a way. I doubt we have heard the last of the dispute that went public in the spring between his doctor and the Sox doctors on how he should have been treated - especially when it appears the Sox course of action did not work.

If surgery now will end his career, surgery 4 months ago would have done the same.

The rehab at least gave him a shot of coming back.

Exceptional money pitcher, and one of the best when it mattered, but a total attention whore, who I won't miss having to listen to on the radio. You never wish injury upon anyone, so I hope he heels up good.

curt was larry bird in a sox uniform. he had no fear. what he did in 04 was legend. i have nothing but good things to say about curt on and off the field. thanks for the memories curt. hope you make your way to the hall of fame.

I credit he and David Ortiz with turning the mentality around surrounding this franchise.

A Globe survey of baseball writers said Curt is on the bubble for the HOF-only 216 wins. But I agree his 11-2 playoff record and 3 rings should get him in. What do you think?

Hes in that category with guys like Catfish Hunter, Jack Morris, Dave Stewart, and Luis Tiant.

Good analogies, Lifer. Those guys, like Schill, were scrappers who came up big in crunch time.

And one of those losses if I am not mistaken was game one of the 2004 ALCS when he was trying to pitch on one leg; not sure if he got the loss or a ND, but the 11-2 post season record should be taken into account, the guy was money, M-O-N-E-Y..............

Whats to say about it?

The Sox forced him to take a physical and an MRI before he signed the contract, and both showed there was no significant injury with the shoulder or the tendon. The injury occurred after the contract was signed, so there was really nothing that could be done about it. Schilling may be a horses ass, but this wasn't some nefarious scheme to swindle the Sox out of money. It was just crappy luck.

I'm born into the Bosox cult and I will always love Schill for winning us a WS, but I thought he knew his arm was toast when they inked that contract?

And exactly how would Schilling have known his shoulder was toast but the FO would be clueless to that fact?

Regardless, if Schilling knew his arm was toast and the sole purpose of this contract was to get money, he'd have signed with a team like the Phillies or the Mets who were reportedly offering guaranteed deals over $10M.
