OT for ESPN Haters: Writer Compares Rooting For Celtics to Rooting For Hitler

i dont care about anyone at espn, they all mean nothing to me.

I've never liked her very much. This doesn't change things either way.

(That's it, nothing dramatic from me.)

Turns out an apology has been issued, though it appears to be by her employer on her behalf rather than from the writer...

Naturally a contrite ESPN reports they have scolded their writer (who is not returning calls for comment) and is lauching an investigation on how this editorial checks and balances lapse could have possibly happened...

Its almost as if the writers just post whatever they want to the website and the editor reads peoples comments in order to decide what to change.

There is only one solution for this: editors should have a gun put to their head while they check the story out. If they miss anything, their brains become their office's newest decor.

if they have any that is...

Hey, if you live in Boston you're probably familair with the Toucher and Rich Show on WBCN (Patriots ROCK! radio network). They've gotten really into this because Jemele Hill made a name for herself by saying that Don Imus needed to be fired, and that no apology would ever be enough.

for her info. They gave out her office phone number a little while ago but quickly realized what a bid idea that was. They also sent Adolfo, who's kinda like their mascot, and some other staffers to Bristol to hold up signs and protest ESPN's headquarters.

While I don't think her article was the worst thing in the world, I am kind of offended by it. Just as context had a lot to do with why Imus's comments were so bad, I think when you place her comments in the context of Boston being perceived as a racist city makes them worse, which I suspect is what she was getting at.

What's most offensive is how much of a hypocrite she's turned herself into. No apology would satisfy her. Pffft. What Imus said was off the top of his head. She had hours and hours of writing, rewrites, and editing before that hit the net, and she didn't realize that might be offensive? It's not even really historically accurate. While there was tension in the 80's, no one ever perceived Gorbachev to be some kind of iron-fisted villain.

She's usually pretty cool and well spoken on 1st and 10 and has stuck up for the Pats quite a few times.

Disappointing.

you really think they know what they are writing ? their audience is the people ignorant like her and they just generally assume whatever they throw out there will stick.Read scoop jackson's article on allen. he keeps saying the boston fans were on him when he was not playing well in the playoffs. which is so opposite the truth-they were always supportive of him throughout.

Jemele Hill is also supposedly the first to write that the Vogue cover of Lebron and Giselle evoked images of King Kong and was racist....

you're right, but I never took scoop jackson seriously. maybe I need to not take anyone on espn seriously. I heard a podcast with jemele hill on with simmons and she didn't seem liek the rest of espn's talent. i guess I was wrong.

If someone really wrote that crap...

Suspended from ESPN. :D

ESPN suspends columnist Hill
By Jessica Heslam
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 - Updated 5h ago

ESPN.com columnist Jemele Hill was suspended yesterday after sparking outrage by comparing rooting for the Boston Celtics [team stats] to Adolf Hitler and nuclear war.

“Jemele has been relieved of her writing and on-air responsibilities for a period of time to reflect on the impact of her words,” ESPN spokesman Paul Melvin said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

Yesterday, Hill amplified on her earlier apology for writing, “Rooting for the Celtics is like saying Hitler was a victim. It’s like hoping Gorbachev would get to the blinking red button before Reagan.”

“In expressing my passion for the NBA and my hometown of Detroit I showed very poor judgment in the words I used.”

Hill’s suspension came as WBCN [website] radio hosts Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb branded her a hypocrite and demanded she be fired.
