IRVING, Texas (AP) - Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens wasn't on the field for the start of the team's mandatory offseason minicamp.

Team officials say Owens missed the first of two workouts Tuesday for personal reasons. It wasn't clear what those were or if he would be on the field for any part of the three-day minicamp.

The flamboyant receiver participated in optional workouts the past four weeks. Heading into the final year of his contract, he recently signed a three-year extension worth around $27 million.

What a good way to show that you earned all that money.

Re: OT: Terrell Owens gets all that money then misses mandatory mini-camp.

Just another example of the iron fist Wade Phillips wields. Is there any other coach you see more fit to handle the egos in the Cowboys lockerroom than Phillips. If things go bad, he will just whip the team in shape while pansies like Belichick or Parcells would just cower in the fetal position in the corner.

I still think this could be the very year that the Cowboys implode on themselves.

Re: OT: Terrell Owens gets all that money then misses mandatory mini-camp.

Owens owns that team. They're in for a big blow up this year with the added personalities and contract issues they're having.

Re: OT: Terrell Owens gets all that money then misses mandatory mini-camp.

Not to mention their head coach will be too busy looking over his shoulder all year long at Jason Garrett.

What contract issues? Ken Hamlin is the only training camp holdout and it's because he's been franchised. The team and Hamlin are aggressively working to get a deal done.

There are rumors going around that Owens' absence has something to do with the health of his eight year old boy. Odds are this is a non-story and if the rumors are true I hope it is, but since it is T.O.-related you know speculation will run rampant. I would think that after Spygate that Patriots fans would be the first ones to avoid another rush to judgment.

I used to avoid rushes to judgement but, during Spygate, 85% of fans from other teams never extended my team that same courtesy. Since then, I've been a lot "freer" to judge other teams in the initial story. That and I just don't like T.O., lol. Don't mind the Cowboys, but hate T.O.

Exactly.

For everyone else: T.O. has been an asshat in the past, but how does an excused absence from June minicamps for personal matters make him a turd now?

Couldnt agree with you more...no one ever cared about our team during the whole Spygate fiasco....

Yup.

T.O. has been an asshat in the past, but what part of an excused absence from June minicamps for personal matters makes him a turd now?

Who/what/where said it was an excused absence? That is nowhere in the article that I posted and I haven't seen it anywhere else yet.

"T.O. is dealing with a personal matter not related to last week's drug-testing issue. He took his physical yesterday and was excused for the rest of the week."

That is from the Dallas Morning News blog (would be the equivalent of Reiss' in Boston)

Re: OT: Terrell Owens gets all that money then misses mandatory mini-camp.

Personal matter = he doesn't feel like practicing. Quite the same thing Burress is probably going through. Didn't he skip the mini-camps the last couple of years as well with "injuries" that miraculously healed before the first game of the season?

Is this supposed to be a lesson we learned? I'll tell you what I learned...fans of other teams were royal *******s when it came to our team and I can't wait to return the favor.

Here's hoping for a scandal laden season for every other NFL team full of hatred and irrationality from everyone else. Hope you like it.

He was there in the morning according to several players, got news of whatever the personal issue was and then left. He just got a new contract and has participated in every Organized Team Activity thus far, even the OTA's prior to the new contract. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that the news is a death or serious illness in the family.

Re: OT: Terrell Owens gets all that money then misses mandatory mini-camp.

too much soap opera in Cowboys. Did he not cry after his team lost a playoff game?

Yeah... either that or he just doesn't feel like practicing. Considering the news, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. But don't be suprised when he pulls that same hammy he's been complaining about for the past two training camps and has to miss practice.

I am fine with veteran players getting rest in training camp. It worked well for Moss last preseason (NFL record for TDs in a season) and it has worked well for Owens (more TDs than any receiver in the past 2 years). Guys like Sam Hurd and Miles Austin will benefit from the work with the first team. He is a guy who not only plays hurt but still plays at an elite level when hurt, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.
