Cedric Maxwell said earlier this year that KG is a better basketball player
than Larry Bird.

He may be a better defender, but wihen the chips are on the line Garnett
looks to pass and please do not put him on the free throw line.

Bird always wanted the balll when it mattered most.
He would never clunk two free throws down by 2.

Ok that's great. KG is still a damn good basketball player and one of the reasons why last year the C's were 24 - 58 and now they're on the verge of winning another title. So I'll take that. As if saying someone "is not Larry Bird" is an insult. Paul Pierce isn't Michael Jordan does that mean we should cut him?

maxwell also said nowitzki is better than bird ..

LMAO, so now you guys are down on KG because he missed a couple of free throws in the closing seconds? And please don't sit there and try to tell me that the OP wasn't down on Garnett. His post reeked of negativity.

I wouldn't use Maxwell's opinion when it comes to Bird. I think Maxwell is still pissed when Bird called him out way back when in the playoffs and Max had no confidence.

I took Cedric Maxwell for about 150$ at foxwoods playing 2/4 NL at Foxwoods, so his opinion is worthless to me:D

I like KG a lot but this isn't the first time in these playoffs that he has bricked free throw attempts in crunch time.

I did expect a bit more scoring from KG in the Finals but his play is a bit dissapointing as of now,Pierce has stole the show and Allen has been great as well - KG has not eactly stunk up the place like the Pats OL in SB 42 but if he picks it up a notch in the next 1 or 2 games the Celtics are in great shape.

You guys have to realize that only certain members of the Big 3 are going to have big games in the same game. K.G. had an impressive showing in Game 1 and so did Pierce... Allen not so much. It'll be very rare if all three of them play well in the same night in the playoffs. K.G. is a big reason why the Celts are where they are. Maybe you guys have gotten spoiled rooting for all three New England teams (I root for the Heat, Pats, and Sox). My Heat season has taught me that you can't expect perfection from even D-Wade night after night.

i love kg but not only is he no larry bird . hes no kevin mchale either.

I thought Kevin Garnett was Larry Bird.

This thread disproves that belief.

Thank you for correcting me.

Even his coach called him out a bit on his performance last night. Said you have to play hard, but you HAVE TO play smart. Because of foul trouble, admittedly he picked up someone elses early which exacerbated things, he's had to sit. They needed him to step up last night defensively with Perk out if not offensively, and he couldn't. Missing 3 or 4 critical free throws in a hats and tee shirts game as Tedy calls them is not what you would expect. He's taken some heat locally and nationally today as a result. That's tough - but you make the big bucks and crave the big stage you best deliver on it. Nobody's expecting perfection. He's played tentatively in stretches, almost like the opportunity he craved overwhelms him. He needs to find a way to push through that.

Comparing anyone with Bird is unfair - I also think Maxwell's comments about Bird and KG can be taken a number of ways. Talent-wise I think KG probably does have more talent than Bird did... but Bird had so many intangibles of heart, leadership and as the OP said, wanted the ball with the game on the line.

I'm pretty sure Bird missed his fair share of important shots down the stretch as well - and Paul Pierce too let the ball be stolen in the final minutes down 2 (although if we were dealing with Refs from the 1980s that probably would have been a foul on Kobe)

So none of them are perfect, and our memories of Bird are just that - memories that have grown over 20 years.

But to the original point that KG is no Larry Bird - he is not - and its doubtful you'd find KG asserting that himself.

.
i watched larry birds entire career. i didn't miss a game in the 80s. he didn't miss his fair share of shots. nine out of ten times he came threw when it counted the most. you could make a hour long dvd with nothing but larry bird clutch shots. to say the memories of larry bird have grown is like saying his memories are being exsagerated. that couldn't be more wrong.

I can't remember Bird missing any shots to lose a championship or a series. I do not think there is another Boston athlete who was as clutch as Bird offensively. My memory of the 80's is pretty good when it comes to Bird and the Celtics. At that time in my life I habitually read the Boston papers everyday and tuned in to any news coverage of the Celtics and to the best of my knowledge, I can not remember any criticism of Bird except for when he shoveled snow in his driveway. I can't think of any other Boston athlete who wasn't criticized at some time or another. I remember being in the old garden, watching L.A. and the Celtics go at it for the W.C., Larry got hot and we all started the chant: Larry-Larry-Larry. That was standing room only, in the bar downstairs. When Bird retired the Globe had a section as fat as a Superbowl coverage regarding Bird. Of course thats just my memory of Bird, but, "Bird missed his fair share of important shots down the stretch"...........when?

Very very very correct. You could not be more clutch than Larry Legend.

The only shot I can remember him missing was in game 4 of the 1987 Finals, and that was after he had already hit a huge shot (right before the iddy-biddy skyhook).

he had one second to get that shot off and everybody including the lakers knew he was getting the ball and he still got a great shot off but back rimmed it.
