Trouble brewing
12:07 PM Sun, Jun 15, 2008
Albert Breer

And you thought the Cowboys had drama ...

What figures to be a competitive race for the NFC East title hasn't gotten off to a great start elsewhere.

In New York, last week's minicamp was a mess. Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey garnered headlines, and not for the right reasons. Former DMNer Gary Myers says the club needs to get rid of Shockey. And now, before the problem festers further and becomes a training camp distraction.

Meanwhile, Donovan McNabb and others in Philly are trying to downplay a problem the quarterback has in his throwing shoulder. McNabb also threw a nice compliment T.O.'s way.

"We were a team that was right there, and we were right there consistently," he said. "Then when we brought in a guy like T.O., the attitudes kind of shifted. The defense had that extra confidence because we had somebody like T.O. On offense, we had that extra weapon and we knew we had something."

The Redskins have something too -- Injuries. Jim Zorn is just hoping that the PUP list won't have a dozen names on it when training camp opens next week.

The news we've got on your home team today? Well, Todd's got a nice story on the Cowboy rookies going to Canton, Ohio to visit the Hall of Fame. So things aren't so bad around here.

No kidding. Whose bright idea was it to get him and then who couldn't handle him... Leadership is about a lot more than completing some passes out of your ass and making Campbell Soup commercials.

I'll say this for Romo - he's been almost Bradyesque in "handling" his mercurial WR. I think guys who had to make accommodations just to hang on and make it to the NFL are willing to extend themselves and find ways to make talent work for them that prima donnas drafted at the top of the first just can't comprehend.

with Tomase out at the Herald, anyway we can get Breer back? Can we make a trade?

Mcnabb was never TO's problem in Philly and Romo is not his answer in Dallas.

It was about $ in Philly - Lurie wouldn't pay up. It is about $ in Dallas - Jerry has paid up.

Imagine if we'd heard this back in April:

"The Patriots have traded John Tomase and a seventh-round draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys for Albert Breer."

I'd do a backflip or two. :)

you have to factor in T.O.'s own personal problems with steroids and depression.

Although it's not proven he takes steroids, it sure as hell looks like he does, and it would explain his severe depression after getting paid 27 million and then his suicide attempt.

Don't you remember TO throwing McNabb under the bus and saying the Iggles would be better off with Favre at QB?

How quickly they forget...the Eagles locker room was fractured between TO and McNabb supporters. McNabb never really recovered, injuries not withstanding. He's been on borrowed time in Phily ever since. It was almost as if TO articulated what a lot of people were thinking but didn't dare say.

How quickly we forget the Mcnabb/Owens thing was nothing more than TO's way to shoot himself out of town after he didn't get his $ from the Eagles.

If the Eagles had paid him, as Jerry Jones has, the TO/Mcnabb blow up never happens.

Is it just me, or does McNabb look like he has gained a considerable amount of weight in the offseason?

Too bad that they let Breer go....They should have given him the Beat. Even before Spygate I thought Breer was better than Thomase....I even thought he was better than Reiss in some aspects (football IQ).

But you can't blame Breer for going to Dallas...I imagine all great football writers want to be in Texas.

Re: OT: Albert Breer-Trouble brewing in The Big Apple? DMac *misses* TO?

Their issues pre-dated and surpassed mere contract as well as actual injury. McNabb basically admits in this piece that he would have likely supported TO's contract demands on their face if not for the fact that TO had already wounded his pride. He is pretty thin skinned. He says TO should have come to him with any concerns. But the fact is he chose to not confront him even after those began to surface. And so things festered between them as well as between TO and the organization. I think that is why TO became so entrenched in his demands...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2315565

Owens came to believe he was a better WR than McNabb was a QB. And he was right, though McNabb will never admit that. It was about who should/would be the face of the franchise/team and who needed whom more as much as it was about $$$. TO began to become frustrated with his QB in the 2004 season. Then McNabb publicly downplayed the significance of his returning for the Superbowl, which grated on TO and set up a situation for him to be thoroughlyy frustrated given their performance disparity in that game...

I'm sure TO has had similar run ins with other QB's. Those uniformly seem to be exacerbated by his perception/realization that they singularly pose an impediment to his success. Only Romo has managed to survive that through two seasons and his own new contract. I think that is because he cultivated a friendship based bond with the mercurial one that other QB's egos would not allow them to. It has allowed him to some extent to manage his WR publicly and privately. McNabb bristled at Owens criticisms and pulled rank on him in the huddle and then made no effort to mitigate that privately. That was a mistake in context of who recruited whom, and it was made because of ego.

Re: OT: Albert Breer-Trouble brewing in The Big Apple? DMac *misses* TO?

Be all that as it may, the Cowbums are not going to the SB, never mind winning one, as long as Romeo is the QB and TO is the #1 WR.

Re: OT: Albert Breer-Trouble brewing in The Big Apple? DMac *misses* TO?

I just love how that article barely mentions the Cowboys. It would be like Reiss writing of the Jets, Bills, and Miami.

We will find out soon enough on HBO's "Hard Knocks". :D

That is going to be some first class entertainment right there.

I don't know...Jamie Dukes had the Cowboys winning the SB last night on NFLN, and had the Vikings contending as well, based on his crack formula of counting former pro bowlers on the roster...

Later on some cooler head had a piece noting that with all the pro bowlers Jerry has assembled the pressure will rachet up on Romo (who has yet to win a playoff game with this unit) to deliver this season, and his issuing statements to People Magazine regarding his personal life doesn't bode well for his focus heading into another season in Dallas.

Re: OT: Albert Breer-Trouble brewing in The Big Apple? DMac *misses* TO?

Romo will be fine, the last two quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl lost their first two playoff games, fortunately for you guys and unfortunately for the rest of the NFL not every QB is a freak of nature and has the kind of initial playoff success that Brady did.

Not to mention his girlfriend was a well known skank on the Dukes of Hazzard set.
