Reiss: Pats likely to stay on west coast during both trips

They're all going to stay with NEM in his apartment in Phoenix.

Re: Reiss: Pats likely to stay on west coast during both trips.

THis is a better bet if Kraft can talk Jones into it.

Use of a college facility is doubtful as the games will be in the height of the college season.

The first trip yes, but not the 2nd trip, which is after the regular season and before the bowls.

If they do stay out west and both NE and SD are undefeated (very possible) this will create a media circus around the game.

A few people seemed to think I was nuts when I presumed this would be the case but it stood out like a sore thumb to me; so much so that I think Kraft requested the back to back games given such a bizarre schedule. The odds of it just working out this way don't, and didn't, make sense to me.

Same here. I was debating with someone about it before. It just seemed to make so much sense to stay out there and save the 6000 air miles.

I would have been shocked had the Pats come back home between these games. That would have been nuts.

Although they don't attend road games, the Pats Cheerleaders are welcome to stay at my place. :)

The Cowboys had a facility in Ventura County.
It is about 1/2 way between SF and SD

It is also a very good climate - ocean breezes keeps it cool and it is away from any disctractions - players will have to drive 2 hours to get into any trouble.

The developers thought so also....and bought it.......

I know this was a big topic of contention when the schedule was announced. Some, like myself, believed that the Pats would stay on the West Coast rather than flying back and forth, and some believed that Belichick wouldn't "break his routine" by forcing players to stay out there.

Here is what Mike Reiss had to say today in his mail bag:

It makes sense. And Belichick DOES have connections in California (Fresno St anyone?) where the team could practice.

Yeah, but then where will Fresno State practice?

There's plenty of hours in the day, they aren't on the field that much.
Weight room? Film rooms? Training room? Meeting rooms? There is more to preparing a team for a game than a couple hours a day on the field.

Well this was honestly to be expected.

They do fine for the SB. Film, meetings, etc, can easily be done in conference centers of hotels and the like.

Also, I dont think they would head west unless they knew for sure they could manage everything as normal as possible. They're not going to sacrafice anything from their normal work week at Foxboro just to skip jetlag.

Re: Reiss: Pats likely to stay on west coast during both trips.

you can take a bus to go to Oakland or SanFrancisco from Sandiego or vice versa.

You don't want to do that, trust me.

You can take a bus from Boston to San Diego too - doesn't make it a good idea. Even if you avoid traffic - and you can avoid the really bad traffic fairly easily from SD through L.A. and beyond if you leave at the right time - it's a long drive.

Re: Reiss: Pats likely to stay on west coast during both trips.

They fly to the Jets and that is a lot closer. So I expect they will fly for this as well.

For sure. I don't think a high school team would take a bus for that trip.

Tune - You really don't think that they practice on the field 18 hours a day do you?

Scheduling the practices will probably be the easiest part of the whole trip.

Again, there are plenty of hours in a day for the teams to share.

And how many times do we hear college players say they had nothing that could compare to the facility they see when they walk into Gillette for the first time...

There are all sorts of issues. What to do with the guys who got dinged the previous week - do they travel with the team to be there if and when they are ready or do trainers stay behind to work with them...do players injured that week remain on the coast or return home to doctors and trainers and facilities they are familiar with...do families and all the distractions that entails travel with them or nag at them from 3000 miles away...

Seems like a lot of upheaval and expense to forego a 6 hour red eye flight on which most of the players will nap... Most of these guys hate killing time in hotels waiting for a game to play. Do they want a week of that, or will some of them be flying out to homes on Sunday night and returning Tuesday... These guys fly like most of us drive. Morris was saying on All Access he flies in from Texas every Sunday night or rather Monday AM and home on Friday afternoon so he can work out here with his teamates and spend 48-60 hours with his family in between. He's been doing that since mid March...
