OT: Tales of a Fairweather Fan...

I know this will probably get moved, but it is somewhat on football, as I should have learned my lesson from watching the Pats.

Yesterday was my 44th birthday. I kept it low-key and was happy to settle in and watch the Celtics, as I was sure that my BD would be good luck! Well, they go down very quickly by double digit figures, down by 24 at one point, and by 17 or 18 at the half. The Kobe ball washing is (as it has been all series) constant and nauseating. If I hear one more time how he controls the game from the outset and lets his teamates get confident in the first half then takes over in the 4th, I am going to throw up. I just can't take it any more! It's my B-day!! I switch to Home & Garden TV (after checking back in the 3rd and they are still down by 15) and fall asleep.

This morning the headline reads "Celtics refuse to lose Game 4!" d%#*!@t!! Haven't I learned anything from watching the Pats (which I never turn off) that you never turn off the game!!

Also, if King Kobe were in the NFL he would give Peytie-Pie a run for his money to be the player who complains the most about calls. (See, this is football related!).

Not that I ever agree with Dennis and Callahan but who can blame anyone for shutting a game off at that is a blowout and you know won't be over until midnight. This game could have been on a weekend night and Sundays could definitely start earlier. Hell if the Cs win Sunday the celebration and coverage that I love to watch will be at 1 am. I don't think that makes anyone a fairweather fan just someone who has to sleep on a weeknight. All that being said I DVRed the game and watched it when I got home from work at midnight.

I understand. I stopped watching halfway through the first quarter, just because the way the C's were plaing was making me sick. I intermitently checked the score online and as they creeped back in, I was refreshing every few seconds. Finally I said screw it and turned on the last 5 minutes.

That was some of my favorite 5 minutes of hoops evah.

Yup. And let it. What a sports decade!

Sadly for me, I only "watch" the Celts play by reading the game thread the next day. One of the bad things about having an 18 month old who is cutting teeth is you are in bed by 9. Literally. I do check online to see who won when I am up at 1:00 am, though.

I think now that they can seal the deal I am going to have to watch and deal with the next day sleep deprivation. Why do all these games start at 9, that totally sucks.

Then, when I get up this morning and try to find in-depth coverage on ESPN, it is lacking (as they were so sure the Lakers were going to win, they are apparently stunned into silence along with LA). Oh well, the sight of Kobe storming into the lockerroom must have been priceless. Hopefully on Sunday I'll get to witness that as I won't be turning off any more games in the series!

I went to bed at half time thinking two things 1. the game would either be a Lakers blowout or the Celts wold pullof a narrow come back victory. 2. What an incredible run of the 3 major sports team this area has had, this year.

And it all began with the Patriots 2001 season. And it wil lcontinue with a the 2008 Patriots season which will end with the Championship evaded us last year.

Seriously, I didn't feel they were playing that badly. Lakers had a lot of shooters in their plus Odom, and Kobe wasn't doing s**t. Celts were getting tons of open shots, but missing.

The Lakers are not physical at all, so a little physical play makes them a jump shooting team.

I'd never predict a comeback like that, but it didn't shock me. Their top player was getting nada and a little defensive adjustment and hitting some shots and physical play...

Soft teams don't make it in the playoffs.

Stupid Pacific time zone. They should do in the US what they do in China: one huge time zone. Sure, it doesn't get dark out west until midnight, but think of the convenience of never having to change your watch when you travel!

I remember (and my memory could be faulty) when basketball was very popular during the Jordan years that the finals were a huge deal and games started at 7 or 7:30. Am I remembering wrong?

If so, I assume the declining popularity of the sport had a lot to do with the "who cares" 9:00 time starts.

The Celtics played quit badly on defense during the first period, and KG continued missing makable shots, which annoyed the heck out of me, but the comeback was very sweet to watch!

My viewing habits were a little in between yours (watching the entire game), and those who turned it off. I watched almost the entire first half, but switched over to ESPN2 to see how the Revs were doing, and watched various other programs during halftime. I watched most of the second half as well, but I think I fell asleep for about 5 minutes during the beginning of the third quarter (Bustin' your ass throughout the day has that side effect), and watched the Celtics inch their way back throughout the remainder of that quarter and take the lead with around 4 minutes left in the fourth.

Ray Allen made some huge shots, Paul Pierce started out slow but came on in the second half (made some heavily contested shots and played strong D against Kobe), Posey played a very good game, and KG played better down the stretch as well.

Happy Birthday! Can't really fault you at turning it off. Sometimes I'll go online and catch the chatter for updates. My problem is that its life and death when it comes to Boston (pick a team) in the playoffs. Can't eat during a game, and can't sleep after one. I was telling a Pittsburgh fan the other day, no way could I have watched that triple ot hockey game as a fan. The game is too fast combined with my intensity as a fan, I'd have exploded. Good thing Orr came along when I was younger. Icing on the cake = the Celtics put the nonsense of "Kobe is as good as Jordan" and Phil is in Red's category where it belongs, the hall of shame.

One benefit of last night's game is seeing the Laker fans in the media who gave the Celtics no chance having to squirm and eat their words this morning. In particular, I made it a point to find Pats hater Bill Plaschke and find what he had to say. I can just picture how difficult it must have been for him to write this column. Though I was disappointed, but not surprised, that he still couldn't find it inside himself to give the Celtics any credit. Instead, he sums it up as solely the Lakers choking, as if he still believes them to be the better team.

Lakers' meltdown to Celtics is hard to swallow

They didn't choke.

By definition, when one chokes, there is noise, movement, desperation.

The Lakers didn't choke.

They blew the NBA Finals without making a sound.

They botched their entire season while standing still.

They lost a 24-point lead -- the biggest collapse in the NBA Finals in at least 37 years -- by staring dreamily into the hardened eyes of a Boston Celtics team that angrily shoved them into next fall.

Choke? On Thursday night in front of a Staples Center crowd whose early cheers lapsed into a stunned and horrified silence, the Celtics' 97-91 victory was more like a smote.

The Lakers led by 21 points after the first quarter, the biggest first-quarter lead in NBA Finals history.

The Lakers led by 20 points midway through the third quarter, an insurmountable margin for a team playing at home and possessing the MVP.

And, yeah, they lost by six.

They gave the game away, but not before one of them walked away.

You know how Los Angeles fans are famously criticized for leaving games early.

Add Kobe Bryant to their list.

He walked off the court with three seconds remaining as the Lakers were bringing up the ball for a final shot.

It was a most egregious act for a most valuable player.

Meltdowns everywhere.

I put my daughter down to sleep last night (she would NOT go willingly) and by the time I was out of the room, the Celtics were already down 24.

So I sat and watched. I was playing my guitar with earphones on, so i wasn't listening to the annoying announcers.

Everytime I played a particular bar chord combination, the Celts would make a run. But my fingers were getting tired, so I'd stop. And the Lakers would run the lead back up.

Let me tell you, I played the same damn bar chord combination from the mid 3rd period to the final seconds, my wrist cramped, my fingers falling off, and I not only believed they would come back and win, I KNEW it all depended on me!

I wouldn't say they played well, but the Lakers spaced it out and had shooters out there, forcing the Celtics to choose to help on Kobe or Gasol, or leave openings for Odom or the Europeans in three point land.

I doubt they just played harder (although that's part of it) and everything took care of itself. They manned up more on Kobe and got physical and those easy shots dried up.

The games are on at 9 because we are playing LA and it 6 there when the game starts.

If you started any earlier people would still be at work and in School.

The frustrating thing for me is last week they took 2 days of skipping Sat for sun and they will do the same this weekend keeping us up til 12 on sunday night when they could do it on Sat night.


I stay up for all the games and I was one who stuck it out last night and was rewarded with My own Bird/Havelcheck steals the ball moment. I am 25 so I was to young during the last run.

That game goes down in the lore of great games by the Celtics.

Why the hell would anyone turn off the game. Especially after seeing the Fakers charge back from the Celtics lead with 7 minutes in Game 2 although it fell short.

We have seen too many Pats comeback and should know that anything can happen. Basketball, ALMOST always a team gets back in the game especially when it is a great team like the Celtics. You have to have a mediocre team or worse to not have any kind of rally and you should expect a rally from the C's.

I watched all game, although when they were getting crushed I muted the TV and was reading at the end of the first half. I didn't expect us to win but I had a feeling that they could definitely storm back into the game.

I honestly never lost faith in the C's during that game. Frustrated? Yes, very. Feeling hopeless? No.

It's basketball, it's all about hot streaks and momentum, I had no doubt in my mind we'd get it to at least 9 by the 4th, and it turned out to be 2.

If the Lakers cutting a 24 point lead to 2 within the last 7 minutes of a game didn't teach you a lesson, I hope this did.

The first half was nauseating and I don't blame anyone for turning it off, I had to restrain myself from throwing the remote through the television a few times. Glad I stuck with it though, once we cut it to nine I knew we were winning the game, I kept calling my brother to wake him up but he was out like a light. I woke up this morning to a "holy ****, we won?!?!" text message.
