Inside Today's Bulletin
Eagles' Samuel Still Has Got A Ways To Go
By: G. Cobb, The Bulletin
06/06/2008

You can believe that veteran cornerbacks Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard have been on the phone with each other, talking about the fact that the Eagles gave Asante Samuel "the bank," even though he's not head and shoulders better than them and can't play pure man-to-man defense as well as they are able to.

I could just see their faces as Samuel was beaten a number of times by some of the team's backup receivers in 1-on-1 drills this week. There had to have been some emotion coming up in Sheppard and Brown from the fact that the Eagles had given so much money to a guy who hasn't made a single play for the Eagles, as of yet.

All-Pro and all, Samuel had free agents who are long shots to make the team running right by him. The 1-on-1 drill clearly is not his game.

In fairness, the game consists of doing much more than just playing pure man-to-man coverage, even though Samuel should be good at it. I haven't seen the acceleration out of his backpedal that I expected to see when receivers are going deep.

Samuel also doesn't seem comfortable coming up into the press technique. He seems to be more at ease when he's playing off the receiver and looking into the backfield to get an idea of what type of route the receiver is going to run.

He's much better when he's coming up on the pass route, rather than turning and running. He wasn't especially strong with his jam of the wideouts when they came off of the line against him when he was in press technique.

I don't want to make more of the matter than it deserves, but Samuel is clearly more of a system left cornerback than Brown or Sheppard.

..

According to the source, "Jim likes his cornerbacks up in the press position in the face of wide receivers. He likes his corners to jam the receiver as they come off the line of scrimmage. He's always screaming for that, but Asante likes to play off of the receiver."

The source also went on to say that he thought Samuel was the best in the game at breaking on the ball, but he's not a pure man-to-man coverage guy.

The source pointed out that he liked Samuel's ability to transition from up in the bump technique to off the receiver and vice versa. He talked about Samuel's ability to play mind games with a quarterback.

Another league source said that he thought Sheppard and Brown are better pure 1-on-1 coverage guys, but that Samuel is the best in the game at reading a quarterback and jumping a route for the big play.

The Eagles hope to get quite a few of those big plays this fall.

Re: Surprise, Surprise...Asante..........

This is what happens when our defense has DB's playing 8-yard cushions (even on 3rd and short).

That article looked alot like about a million posts I saw on here when he left.

I know alot of the sports media thinks the fans are idiots, but we can be just as perceptive as them. Asante is about to join the long list of productive Pats who chased big money and ended their careers in obscurity.

The knock on Samuel has always been that he is not strong in man and press coverage. That is a big reason why the Patriots have eased off the press zone coverage in recent years. If the Eagles want this guy to play a lot of press or man coverage, they may be in for a big shock.

Fact of the matter is that Samuel is not a real physical CB and relies on instincts more than physicality to play the position. The Patriots realized that and revised his coverages to adjust.

Keep in mind the reputation of a Philadelphia sports fan. Prefer physical play over finesse, from Dave Schultz to Rocky Balboa. If fans (and team mates) don't like Samuels' one-on-one drills, how will they react to his (disdain for) tackling?

There sure is alot of bold in that article.

That's a mighty bold statement.

Asante Samuel is our ultimate revenge on Arlen "Igglefan" Specter.

If they keep writing things like this, Asante won't have a chip on his shoulder, he'll have a BOLDer up there.

Welcome to Puns 101. Anybody? Anybody?

Iggle fans haven't figured it out yet.
Right now they all have their panties in a bunch because they just figured out their owner is from Boston and was at the Celtics game.
It's a bigger deal with them than Brady wearing a Yankee cap.

Always thought that Assante was a nickel back, and our d guru's played to his strengths not sure that will happen with the eagles.. hate to use the system DB thing, but something to consider. .

i liked samuel, but i feel the need to blame the super bowl loss on him, he held because he wanted big money, then he droped the money catch. if he holds on to that like a star CB should, there is no david tyree catch, no TD to palxico, and an unbeaten season.

Also, if he holds onto that ball, he is most likely Super Bowl MVP, which would have led to even MORE money.

Bye bye, Asante. You usually came up big in the wrong moments.

HE is system DB and always will be he was great when he could sit back and jump the route. besides that he was avearge

I agree. Without significant injuries and maybe an offense that can score some points, I believe the Eagles can have a solid defense and the coaches will know how to play on the strengths of Asante Samuel. The biggest challenge for Samuel is having to figure out how to cover the likes of TO and Burress. Somehow, I have a sneaky feeling Samuel is going to need help with these bigger and quicker receivers and will end up being picked on by Dallas and the Giants with some regularity.

Actually without trying to hijack the thread, the Eagles problems seem to be on the other side of the ball. Westbrook is unhappy with his contract (probably more so after seeing how much they gave Samuel) and McNabb's shoulder appears to be a concern according to news reports after watching the OTA.....

The article is completely bogus.

Training camp?

Please. Asante was one of the top 10 CBs in the league.

Easily.

Was he worth $10 mill a year?

Har har har har har.

Which is precisely why it was strange it was the Eagles that threw the Brinks truck at him, since they are a press coverage man-to-man team.

You know you're having a bad day when Eagles back-up receivers are burning you.

Heh, if that is true he is going to have a helluva time in that division.

Top CB in that division? Pacman Jones....sorry Samuel, you were a product of the BB system and nothing more - welcome to obscurity! ;)
