To me this is one of the most fun times of the off season; beginning to find out which new players look like they are going to fit in. The quarterback situation is looking interesting as well. I am really looking forward to see whether Gutierrez will continue to perform well and give Cassel a run for his money.

I like the emphasis on d-back/linebacker hybrid play. Very interesting stuff. Also interesting that Tank and Mayo are about the same size.

Although it is good to hear about some actual football, I never get overly excited about what happens in minicamp.

I do expect Tank Williams to take over a lot of Rodney's roles so that Rodney can be used more sparingly. He was overused last year and he uncharacteristically gave up too many plays. Williams was a guy I wanted the Pats to go after two years ago. He is the second year back from a big injury and could be a player for a big turnaround.

I have always been high on Hobson. I thought the guy had the physical tools to be a pretty good LB in the Belichick scheme, but was totally misused in New York. He is not a full-time OLB (maybe not even a parttime one). I think his skill set and build will actually allow him to excell inside. The Jets could look back at the end of the season and not only wonder how they could have let Vilma go, but also Hobson.

Good to see Mayo can move fluidly in pass coverage as that was supposed to be one of the knocks on him coming out of college. Slater dropping an INT didn't bother me because he was in the position to make an INT and, if he couldn't make it, he deflected the pass anyway. Slater is going to be one of the more interesting rookie stories to me once the season rolls around.

I dunno, I think that would have been, you know, about 90 days ago or so.

Seriously, though, I don't know what's going to happen one way or the other, but not much would surprise me as far as this story goes.

OK. . . . this is starting to weird me out almost as much as learning that Notre Dame wanted Clay Buchholz to play wide receiver for them.

But, seriously, it seems a little strange for a player who's basically only been used on ST so far.

OK. . . . this is starting to weird me out almost as much as learning that Notre Dame wanted Clay Buchholz to play wide receiver for them.

I believe it was one of their minor league managers who said this, but supposedly Buccholz can outrun Ellsbury. Ellsbury has said he can run a 4.2 forty.

Not to drag this too far OT, but I believe that (A) Buchholz's been timed at 4.32, and (B) Buchholz and Ellsbury were specifically forbidden from racing one another, out of fear that they might injure themselves in the process.

Needless to say, it's a bit funny to think "TD, Buchholz" or "TD, Ellsbury", or, for that matter, Brady catching for a no-hitter.

I agree. For some reason, Slater is the pick that intrigues me most. I guess because it was so out of nowhere. Hopefully he's the new Troy Brown jack-of-all-trades.

But if Slater can't return KOs, then he'll be another wasted draft pick. I don't understand why the FO would give away its 7th-rounder to move up in the 5th round to take a guy who would almost certainly have been available as a UDFA. After all, Larry Izzo has been one of the better STers over the last dozen years, and he went undrafted.

And comparing him with Troy Brown does a great disservive to Troy, one of the all-time Patriots and a highly productive, if under-recognized, WR during his time at Marshall.

And let's hope that the drops suffered by Slater, Wilhite and Sam Aiken during yesterday's session are just aberrations, and not the continuations of trends already established by those three at their previous destinations.

Hobson will be the surprise of camp. Not that he should be, but a guy, fairly ready to jump in the position of most need, is being overlooked.

This is not based on personal observation though.

We went after Izzo. He was not undrafted to us.

People need to realize it's situational. A 5th rounder is very unlikely to make the team at most positions. If we pick up a special teams captain, that's a value for a pick that would have been cut for the Jets roster.

Players are not sacks of wheat at a dry goods store.

Hobson and Williams are intriguing, both are essentially playing for a contract, have played well elsewhere and both have a ton of upside.. Williams has been a guy who if injury free can make a big difference on this team.

How many return men have significant trouble translating those skills to the NFL? That's one of the last things I'd worry about.
