Not to be a homer, but how is Schottenheimer at least seven (or more) places ahead of BB?

“This is a good group of coaches. My brother Bruce is glad to see Coach Gruden is the top active coach. I agree with most of the choices, but would have ranked Marv Levy, Mike Ditka, Joe Gibbs, and John Madden over Schotteheimer and a few others.” -George Allen

The vitriol towards BB will continue for a long time, in this case very subtly..

Exactly, otherwise Quiet Strength would have had to have been included on the list...

Bill doesn't win by motivating via the hug or the scream. He doesn't blow smoke up players skirts one day and eviscerate them in public the next. He doesn't cry on cue or challenge his players manhood. Generally speaking he is painfully honest with them in private and fiercely protective of their reputations in public.

Like Tom says, he wants a HC who puts him in a position to win. Bill is too busy doing that to lead pep rally's for stragglers. He fills his rosters with self motivated players who care about playing championship football. He orchestrates a detailed plan or scheme and then simply asks them within it's confines to do their job. The inspiration they draw from that is rooted in winning.

Paranoia will be with us Patriot fans forever, but do you honestly think BB kis a Rah-Rah type coach?

It would be hilarious if BB started talking enthusiastically about getting "pumped and jacked" (Carroll) and cried at press conferences (Vermeil). Or, if the sideline camera caught BB yelling, "What the hell's going on out there? Everyone's grabbin', nobody's tackling. Grab, grab, grab." (Lombardi.) How about a pre-game lockerroom speech in which BB tells the players, "There's a gleam, men." (Schottenheimer.) Some of us would pay to see BB swing a leg, pump his fist and yell "Boo-yeah!" after a touchdown (Gruden).

Suffice to say that BB is the anti-rah-rah coach.

Any list of Coaches that has Bum Phililps on it, is a list I don't want Bill on.

Exactly, if there is a list of "Coaches that Hate to loose more than anything else in life", that's the list I want my coach on - and I want him to be no. 1.

It says "motivational coaches" not "cheerleaders." BB's players would run through walls for him, and that's all I need to know.

Rah rah and inspirational are two different things, BB does not go through the theatrics during a half time speech, but his method is continual and purposeful..keeping his team focused and centered on one thing winning.. if Schottenheimer is viewed one of the best, I don't want to be part of that list.. the point is that you do not win three superbowls in one decade without sometype of inspiration from the leader.

Just to name a few coaches who also didnt make that list:

Belichick, obviously.
Tom Landry
Bill Walsh
Chuck Noll
Jimmy Johnson
John Madden
Paul Brown
George Halas
Don Coryell
Joe Gibbs

That's a pretty decent list of coaches, eh?? Belichick not landing on this list really shouldnt surprise anyone. Im not sure he'd even make the top 20. Not a slap in the face. Its just not the reason he's great.

Actually it says inspirational coaches.

I have no problem with Belichick not being on the list. Actually I am kind of glad that he isn't an "inspirational" coach. They shtick gets old quick.

And your list has a lot more championships, both Super Bowls and NFL Championships in the pre-Super Bowl era. I'm betting that your list has twice as many championships. If you take out Lombardi, the remaining 9 have maybe 7 championships or less than one per coach. Someone else can do the math but I'd take the NFLN's list with a very large grain of salt (probably the size of Lot's wife..)..............

"Motivation" and "inspiration" at the pro level is very over-rated...

College? High School? Definitely a factor.

Pro level? I think these guys want a coach that treats them like pros, is totally committed to his vision, and gets them well-prepared for gameday. And, when warranted, will pull out the subtle motivational tool (not necessarily the "Gipper" speech-type stuff).

Sound like someone we know and love?

(And let's not forget the hugs and surrounding of BB after the Chargers win, a week after he got slammed in the media for SpyGate. These guys know who stands for them and who stands against them.)

I would have to admit, I'd walk into the depths of Hell and lay out Satan with a big hit if Bill Cowher thought it would win a football game. The man IS inspirational as hell though I don't necessarily like the team he coaches.

BB uses his "star" players to motivate and inspire. You need motivation? Look at TFB who is the first one to arrive and last to leave each day. You need inspiration? Bruschi and Vrabel will come right over to your locker and give you a speech. BB doesn't need to be the motivator.

See, I've seen BB get really excited in games... but usually that's after we've won THE SUPER BOWL.

These coaches that jump up and down and pump their fists after a first quarter 1 yd TD run are what bother me. Win something, then act like a fool all you want.

NFL didn't include BB in the list because of spygate.?

No, because he's not "fire and brimstone" or as flashy as these other coaches are. He motivates through different methods.
