Pierre Woods will have a bigger impact next year than Jerod Mayo

Just my opinion I think he is ready to take over from Rosie Colvin at the OLB position. BB seems to trust him and speaks highly of him. Pierre led the league in percentage of special teams plays with him being involved in 88.9% of all special teams plays. To me this suggests that he has gained the trust of the coaching staff and will be given an opportunity to be a starter.
Some people seem to be assuming that Adalius Thomas will be the new OLB since that is where he ended up playing after Colvin got hurt. I'm saying Thomas will be more valuable inside as a physical presence againts the run. Mayo will have to make his mark on special teams and hope for some playing time as the season rolls on.

Cant agree with you there. I think Woods is pretty far down on the LB pecking order. I'd put it like this:

Thomas
Vrabel
Bruschi
Mayo
Hobson
(Seau)
Woods/Crabel

He will have a hard time seeing the field as the 6th or 7th LB on the overall depth chart. Since Thomas can play inside or out, Hobson can play inside or out and Vrabel could play inside or out, the depth chart at LB is the group as a whole, not position by position.
The other reality is that we use 4 LBs in our BASE, but thats about 50% of the snaps and we have 3 (and sometimes fewer) LBs on the field for the other 50% of the snaps.
Too many good players ahead of him.

I see a Mayo injury as the only way that Woods is on the field before Mayo.

Amazing he is rated below people who play some snaps at olb but 95 % of the snaps will be different position.
Mayo a rookie ILB
Hobson a free agent signing ILB
seau a unsigned ILB
Even more amazing fact is a 3rd rookie who has not taken a snap is along with him why is he not rated below him i wonder.

I disagree with the premise of the thread but this is just silly. We'll have an all new OL and Harrison will be benched based on this. Not to mention Seymour didn't make a single play of significance during the playoffs - he's gone too.

To be fair to Woods, BB has spoken highly of him since the SB. He's still in my doghouse, though, and will remain there unless and until he makes a game-winning/clinching play in a SB. Heck, I hope that Big Vincent Redd plays well enough in TC to overtake him for the 4th OLB spot. I doubt, however, that BB will allow for 3 rookies at one position group; so it looks like, barring injuries, that it's the PC/r-a-t-s for VR.

That BB speaks well about him publicly means absolutely nothing.
How many times have we seen BB do this and promptly cut that player.
What has Woods done at the linebacker position that makes you think
the Pats are going to replace AD at outside linebacker in 08.
I know he's gotten some reps but rarely heard his name, if at all.
BTW. Was that not Pierre Woods who recovered that ball in SB only to
let a Giant rb take it from him.
Frankly, he may not even make the team.

Mayo is a rookie who will trying to learn a complicated defense. If he is a future ILB he is competing with Hobson,Bruschi,Alexander and possibly Thomas. If he is a OLB then he is competing with Vrabel,Woods,Crable,and Thomas. To me everything depends on where BB puts Thomas. If Thomas is OLB then baring injury Woods will never see the field. If Thomas is ILB then that will leave a OLB position open.
We could end up with a open competion for that spot between Mayo and Woods. In this scenerio I think Wood's experience in the system will give him an advantage over a rookie.

While he was "out-muscled", the play should have been blown dead because he clearly had the ball and someone was on him before Bradshaw, who isn't that scrawny (5'10 - 205 lbs), went into the scrum.

Of coarse if BB thinks of Thomas as an OLB then that changes everything. I'm just curious at what position does everyone here see Thomas as the best fit?

Colvin missed the 2nd half of the season and it did not result in significant playing time for Woods.

Maybe Woods steps up this offseason. It would be great if he does. As of now he has proven to be a good ST player but also a guy who the coaching staff did not trust to play on defense last year - even as our 4 older starting LBs appeared to be wearing down at the end of the year.
