Bill Burt takes on Bob Ryan?

He could have returned the favor a trashed Ryan a little bit more than he did but alcohol already accomplished that mission for Burt.

First of all, I don't think he takes on Bob Ryan any more than he takes on any media that he fails to mention specifically. You can say he took on Matt Walsh for being a only cheater post-September 2007. You can say he took on ESPN for "rallying against the Patriots".

Good, not great article.

I don't know if I like it because it tells me what I want to hear or it is the uncontested truth and needed to be said. What I do know, is that Bill Burt writes with amazing clarity about the situation. A clarity that is refreshing considering the tragic move from news to sensationalizing at ESPN, CNN, and the rest.

Belichick isn't above criticism, as he mentioned. I don't know a single person that is in professional sports or otherwise, but he also doesn't owe the media an explanation for every single thing he does or rumor that is conjured up. The media has exploited comments/statements from coaches, players, owners, etc for as long as they could make a dollar off it. And when one of these individuals doesn't give it up, they label him.

I admit, if I were a media personality, I might have a negative impression of Bill Belichick. Would I go out of my way to defend a guy that doesn't give me the time of day? A guy who makes my job harder and doesn't do me any favors?

But that is the game.

True, if a team will bid for, err trade for, Pacman Jones, then what makes anyone think that Bill Belichick wouldn't find a job in a heartbeat if fired by Kraft? Last I checked, Pacman isn't even reinstated and has shown the ability to get into trouble than get into the endzone.

And what is the story here?

It isn't "spygate" because that has been over, as Burt mentions. As the quote goes, when you point your finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you. So it is, that the story is the media's overhyped attempted to find the "biggest story of the decade" and failing with little consequence. Until the media is punished for acting like rodeo clowns, they will jump on the scent of any (potential) major story and when it comes up empty, they will just move right along as if nothing really happened.

The question is, do you really care about a journalist? Do you care about what Bob Ryan says? Jackie McMullen? Anyone at ESPN?

These people are jokes, but because they have a national forum, they are supposed to be respectable (?). I can't say that I respect their point of view/opinion any more than anyone on this message board. I can only say that I appreciate them revealing themselves for what they really are and I could careless what fortune or otherwise they are subject to.

spygate incident turns into a circus. It's not even funny to hear it any more.

Heh, when was it ever funny in the first place?

I thought it was one of the more fair and balanced reports
on cameragate I've seen anywhere. Thanks for the link, PFiEL.

He still had to call BB a sore sport. I thought that was unfair.
Beyond that it was refreshing to see an article that goes
after what we saw all along as the REAL problem.
A shunned press and vanquished rivals.

I'm glad he wrote that article-it's good to see some positive ones once in awhile :)
I liked it, and I'm not sure being called a sore loser is all that bad of a thing...I'd rather have people talking about what a sore loser he is instead of saying "Wow, that Bill Belichick's always so classy and gracious when he loses." lol ;)

I thought it was a TERRIFIC article and I appreciate reading it from a guy that actually gets it.

Is BB a sore loser - YES - I for one am glad he is, as the saying goes, show me a good loser and I'll show you a....loser. I want the head coach to be upset over losing,

Thank you Bill Burt - You rock!!

Very good article. Hell, I HATE Burt on the Big Show and never really liked him on the radio at all...he comes off as naive and I often wonder if it is just a schtick. This article however was very well written and it gives some insight into why he is in charge over at the trib.

Oh, and Belichick IS a sore loser. What is wrong with saying that? Stop pretending like he never does anything wrong and is above reproach. But it's okay. These are professional sports and not little league. So what if you are a sore loser? I don't mind one bit because as a fan I know what he is feeling is multiplied 1 million times from what I am feeling...and I HATE when the Patriots lose and it puts me in a pissy mood for awhile.

An accurate piece. Ryan was extremely disappointing in his column. I wrote to him that Sunday morning regarding my displeasure with it. I never heard back, not surprisingly. I agree, and said on that day, that it was a gesture of support for Tony M.'s piece which was over the top and disgraceful. My regard for Mazz is much, much lower than how I regard Ryan, and even Tomase.

i thought it was a great article. How many newspaper writers in boston actually write an article taking a pro bb approach ? Hardly. Even reiss is more balanced than actually coming out and saying it as it is.
I wish florio and king and the other flock read this. but i guess they all know its true.Accepting it is what is tough for them.

You should post more often.

Which is why I thought it was unfair.
BB takes his defeats (on the surface) as well as any NFL HC I've seen
and better than most. The last loss he took probably hurt him more than
any other in his career. He didn't even let the clock run out before he was making his way to congratulate Coughlin. That looked pretty bad, I admit.
It just seemed that the writer HAD to write something negative to appease the wolves...I mean readership.
Other than that, he was very kind to our coach.

EXCELLENT article. Yes, BB could be more gracious. But the truest thing that Burt says is that spygate is the most overblown story in the history of sports. I like the way he doesn't even give the word the courtesy of a capital "s" - why accord it any extra status?

That was a very courageous article in itself albeit from the man who as sports editor of the Eagle Tribune raised fat ass from a pup. Too bad he didn't do a better job as a mentor to Tomase. If he had, maybe Ryan wouldn't have had anything to pontificate about.

Somebody needs to deliver the message to the Boston print media that it's not Belichick's job to elevate their profile or expand their career opportunities except by winning, and he's done that consistently for them from the outset inspite of the baggage they dragged into the relationship.

They bite the hand that feeds them, and then whine when it won't pet them. If they had their way Belichick would have never had his shot here, the carpetbaggers who bought the baseball team and then realized you couldn't build a waterfront stadium here, and their player/pitcher friendly manager and wet behind the ears kid GM would have never had a shot here, and Danny Ainge and the Grossbecks would have never had a shot here.

You write for your audience. Bill apparently lacks blind ambition and is content to be gainfully employed in his chosen craft (print media) in a suburban setting drawing a paycheck he has to work for and raising his family among the middle class masses. For that alone his peers have long rolled their eyes at him. The Boston media is a lot like congress where it's all about power and influence and peddling it in a way that ultimately gets you noticed outside the cozy confines of this region. Economics in the newspaper business is now finally resulting in what will ultimately benefit this sports market most - term limits.

We lost out on some fine young writers over the last several sports seasons because their career paths were blocked by entrenched and inflated egos at the two major daily's. More of those are getting their golden parachutes delivered annually. Ryan and Shank and Maz and Buck are pretty much the last of the old guard left standing. Won't be long. And each will be marginalized, like Borges, once they lose that byline.

Great post, Mo. I esp. liked the line: "They bite the hand that feeds them, then whine when it won't pet them." And term limits for the print media - almost as much as term limits for local, state and national politicians - is an idea whose time is now.

I also agree with those who claim that calling BB a sore loser was an unfair dig at BB and shows Burt's ignorance of pro football in general, and of the relationship between Daddy Dungheap/NaPolian/the Irksays and BB/BK in particular.

Overall, it was indeed a good article, one of the better-written ones after the BSMW gold standard. It didn't go as far as I would like, but at least it was headed in the right direction. Burt has to interact with these ***holes, after all, so I shouldn't be surprised, or too disappointed.
