VINCE CONSIDERED RETIREMENT?
Posted by Mike Florio on May 23, 2008, 7:09 p.m.

Wow, that Madden curse thing really is strong. Last year, it almost persuaded the guy featured on the cover of the game to retire.

Titans quarterback Vince Young tells Thomas George of NFL.com that Young considered quitting football after his rookie season.

“I really thought long and hard about it,” Young said. “There was so much going on with my family. It was crazy being an NFL quarterback. It wasn’t fun anymore. All of the fun was out of it. All of the excitement was gone. All I was doing was worrying about things.

“My teammates helped lift me out of it. I prayed really hard. And I began to focus on God’s calling for me. Play football. Be a role model.”

Drink tequila from the bottle in public. Take off your shirt. Drink some more tequila.

So what has changed in a year? “Now I can handle this kind of stuff without it making me want to give up football,” Young said. “I learned that 24/7 I’m representing the Titans and, especially, the kids all over I am trying to influence. I look at my man Michael Vick. I learned from that. I look at Pacman. I learned from that. I look at some troubles recently for rappers T.I. and Lil Wayne, guys I listen to. I learned from them. I’ve learned from my life.

“You can get too much going on where you can’t control it anymore. No matter how much money you get, no matter how much comes your way, you have to control yourself. I know it’s up to me. I can’t get too big for my britches.”

Sure you can. All you have to do is take them off.

And then drink some more tequila.

Wow...what an idiot. Cry me a d@mn river Vince. I would easily trade my deployments to Iraq for a couple seasons as an NFL QB. Nothing like listening to grossly overpaid professional athletes whine like little beeyatches about how bad they have it.

I totally agree with you. making millions is "not fun"

oh the oppression.

If I'm Florio, I'd be embarrassed by that column. Although I don't believe God wants Vince Young to play football, I also don't believe that God forbids Vince from drinking tequila shirtless. Jeez. The media is embarrassing these days.

My man Micheal Vick? Yikes.

On another note, looking at the picture in your sig pats1 makes me happy.

I mean, if the guy has family issues, then he has family issues, and since we don't know about them, it's probably not fair to comment on them.

But, he should not complain about the increased media scrutiny surrounding daily life. He went to Texas in the rivals.com/message board era. He did not play D2 in the 1960s. This increased attention should not come as a surprise to him or anyone else.

Vince was in the gossip news recently.

What can he handle? Being one of the most overrated QBs in the NFL right now? Poor him!

It's now officially confirmed: Vince Young will never win a championship.

Looks like he was having some fun. I think that all of us have done far worse then that when we were in high school or College or what ever. Really a good QB does not have to be a saint look at Ken Stabler or Bobby Layne they just have to be a leader and talented.

No question ... I just thought there was a connection between the stories ... friggin media might be getting to him.

I don't think Vince Young is much of a quarterback, and I doubt he will ever be. I think he was an idiot to tell that reporter he wanted to quit.

But.

I absolutely do not get why anybody thinks those pictures are scandalous. Ooh, breaking news, Vince Young went to a party! Where alcohol was served!! And had a perfectly fine, peaceful evening and went home!!!
WTH?

Im guessing his depression stems from that HIDEOUS Speedy Gonzalez(?) Tattoo on his arm. Ouff... :bricks:

But his shirt was off!

I disagree with some of the comments made about this in this thread. Vince probably knows the career life-span of a running QB is shortened by sure injuries. Sometimes, when you're under all the pressure many professional athletes face and there are problems with family, yeah, the thought of giving it all up might cross your mind. Geez, even Vrabel considered early retirement. Sure, he was in a different place, careerwise, but football players take a beating.

i'm in the give vince young a break camp.

but i'm happy tom brady wouldn't admit something like that to a reporter.

Vince Young is lying

He really meant...

"After my rookie season I found out I was going to be on the cover of Madden 08,So I wanted to quit for this ONE year to avoid the severe injury I thought I would have that year, now that I pretty much got off injury scot free being the cover boy so now I am ready to resume my career"

Back in the day, people got tattoos of whatever was in the book. Skulls, mighty mouse, speedy, irish flags, etc...

No, "I want to be an individual and therefore customize my own tattoos" kind of stuff.

Yeah, people were maybe naive back then, but...
