What's up with Bill Simmons these days? One of the biggest stories in Boston's history just ended last week with Spygate and the only thing he puts out is some BS fluff piece on Garnett which is making him look stupid given the big ticket's performance last night.

I wonder if his bosses put a gag order on him taking a stance against the hack writers and commentators who now have egg on their face. C'mon Bill - grow some nuts

There are rumors that Simmons is fed up with ESPN because he's not allowed to even remotely comment on other ESPN entities or persons.

Rumor has it he's writing the bare minimum of what he's required to perform to keep his job until his contract w/ESPN expires and he can do things on his own again where he can maintain control.

Um so you guys know that the Celtics are on the cusp of their first finals appearance in 20 years right?

contrary to the sentiment on this board, the celts are WAY bigger story than spygate in new england right now. simmons is following suit.

He probably just doesn't want to alienate ESPN and the Boston sports fanbase at the same time. Silence is sometimes the best strategy, you know.

Love the Celts, great story, but you're wrong. Basketball is a blip on the radar compared to the NFL, in this region and elsewhere. LIEgate was among the biggest stories in NFL history, and it was about our team. Deciding not to comment on it is seems odd for a prominent sports writer who claims a Boston affiliation.

Agreed...but some might argue that the piece on Garnett seems "phoned-in", as if it was written ahead of time and run without polish. He really needed to discuss Game 7 and Paul Pierce, and nothing happened. Something's up.

I think a lot of this has to do with things Bill wanted to do but wasn't allowed to by ESPN. He had a podcast with Obama that ESPN shot down for whatever reason. In addition, he has had some problems with other ESPN personalities over the years like Scoop Jackson. It's no wonder he went all "Whitlock" on ESPN with that deadspin article.

If that's the case, then he shouldn't have signed the new contract with them a year or two back. He used to joke about his editors censoring him all the time long before that, but he re-signed anyways.

are you joking? Historically, the Celtics have been FAR more important and relevant on the Boston sports scene than the Patriots. Say what you want about the divergent paths they've taken over the last decade, but the Celtics having a legit shot at the title is a huge story right now.

I grew up listening to the Celts under the covers believing my prayers willed them to victory. I continue to root for them as my 2nd favorite team. But today's NBA is a sports footnote compared with the NFL, even in New England. The Patriots are the biggest sports story in the world, and the idea that Simmons would withhold comment on "LIEgate" because of a more current topic like the Celts in ECF, as one poster suggested, seems like a lame excuse if true.

Simmons is much more knowledgeable about basketball anyway.

The McDoogle column is brutal. A must read for the more seasoned sports fan. Link in Chris' post.

On Mitch McDeere: He wants out, but if he just leaves he is f'd, and if he just stays he is f'd. Solution: Have Sports Gal dress up like a hooker and take the boss down to the Cayman Islands.

Ponyexpress, are you kidding me? The Celtics are 10x more important to New England right now.

I'm not disagreeing with the fact the Celts are a big story right now. It just seems odd that he would write a rather weird story about KG in light of what's been called a game 7 for the ages and an instant ESPN classic. Moreover, I think its really odd that he's been silent for two weeks on lie gate. No story, no mailbag, nothing. Something is definitely up.

If you read some of the links he says he worked all that stuff out and they reneged, he said they lied.
