Pat Kirwin thinks so as he spoke today on Sirius - He would like to see no training camp.

He says with all the GTAs and other workouts during the summer and the exhibition games they don't need TC just the one a day workouts as usual.

I like the idea as it seems more than ever that key players get injured with Hammys ect: during the TC.

Its a wild observation but an interesting one.

Your thoughts?

I think it is ridiculous.

Training camp is so toned down from what it used to be....it is now more of a few weeks of double practices rather than a training camp. But I do think those practices are very important to installing your system and getting physically prepared.

having players not ready because of a lack of training camp could cause more injuries. Ask the rookies if they think the offseason programs are enough to get them ready?

And which NFL team has Kirwin coached?

Stupid idea. Unless you play for a team like the Chiefs or Jets where the playbook is 2 pages long and changes once every 10 years.

TC is about learning the system - no F'n way our new guys learn Bill's system and no way the offensive guys (including the Vet's) learn the new offensive plays in Pre Season.

Whomever said that on the radio is out of their mind.

Well this otta clear things up, from the Sirius web site:

From his days as a coach for Hostra University, a talent scout for both the Cardinals and the Buccaneers and front-office executive for the Jets

Makes even more sense...a talent scout?? Did any of his talent make it to a movie..or Hollywood??

Dumbest idea ever. Not suprised it came from Pat Kirwan.

I thought it was a wacky idea but sounded good at that time,After thinking about it I realize its just crazy and will never happen.

Pat was saying the players are physically ready to play once the season begins but I don't know how you can say that about EVERY player when many are not as active in exercize as others in the offseason,No two players are alike in offseason training regiments and some need tough TC more than others.

Sure, I'd love for the first 6 weeks of football to be crappy as the players knock off the rust at $75 per ticket instead of doing it for free at training camp.

I think it should be longer and harder. They're making millions and they already have so much time off. More practice equals a more polished product.

Football is a TEAM sport..think that many see TC like spring training....not at ALL the same...The more I have thought about the more I think an idea like that is totally idiotic..

That makes what he wrote even more dumb because he should know better.

Oops, I missed the part about the Jets. Never Mind.

I think the old idea of training camp at a remote point was rather stupid. The way it is now .. done at the Gillette facilities it serves a usefull purpose for the team and for the fans ... it's a $$$ maker.

I don't think anybody is talking about getting rid of practices in August. But why do the player need to have a camp, where they sleep in a hotel or college dorm and practice somewhere other than their regular location.

What I think the proposal is simply instead of a "camp". You sleep in your regular home/apartment drive to the practice field in the morning, do your job and go home, like you do during the season.

But that it exactly the reason why teams CHOOSE to have training camp. They want exactly what you are saying you see no point in.
A huge factor in training camp is TEAM BUILDING. Anyone who has been part of team understands that spending large amounts of time together builds friendships, builds trust, builds comfort levels with your teammates.

You could conceivably make 'football player' a 12 month a year job. You could spread training camp over 5 months of practices, and wouldn't need it. What you miss is the team building portion, the leadership of the coaches. Do you really think that it doesn't help BB be in control of his players that for 6 weeks wherever they go he is in charge, maming hte rules, and he decides where they have to be and when they have to be there?

Its sort of similar to the military. You built a 'team' you define authority, and you grow into a functioning unit. I dont think you will see the Army change boot camp to 2 practices a day, and the ultimate reasons behind it are very similar.

I don't get it, are you a union rep or something? Because as a fan, I couldn't care less where they have to sleep.

Well said.

TC is the first installment of what turns these guys from 'football players getting paid to do their job' into 'a team focused on a common goal'.

Granted, some teams do it better than others.

keep training camp, gives me something to read about.
