Basically Kevin Blackistone, Woody Paige and Tim Cowlishaw just said everything that's been said here:

1)the apology made it worse, he basically said there were no actual verifiable sources

2) It's the editors fault mostly for letting it run

3) The allegation was so damaging they can't accept the apology and neither should the readers

4) the timing was questionable

I hate Around the Horn but I thought it was interesting that even fellow "journalists" are ripping Tomase. He really needs to go.

Now Dan Lebatard and Wilbon on PTI are saying that Tomase and the editor should be fired.

Dan Lebatard confirmed that Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Tomase and the editor should be fired.

Sorry, I must have misheard that part. Should have checked my sources a little better :D

Really? Right on, Van Gundy. I don't think there's a single head coach in any sport who doesn't feel the same way (maybe Dungy, but that's only 'cause Tomase was writing about the Patriots).

Van Gundy is a great interview. He's on w/ Lebatard all the time down here and is always very thoughtful and forthright.

The guy made up a story, I don't see how he doesn't get fired. HE MADE IT UP.

Weren't they just ripping the Pats a couple of days ago? I hate that show with a passion and hated it before the Spygate episode. Even if they were worshipping a statue of BB, I would not watch.

Even his fellow Herald columnist Howie Carr said they gave him enough rope and he hung himself with it.

In other news the sky is blue and water is wet.

Anyone who doesn't realize that Tomase and the editor deserve punishment in some way are either biased or blithering idiots. I don't know how anyone can justify them recieving no punishemnt.

Tomase and the Herald getting ripped nationally is the best news we've had all week:D

The time for Tomase's apology was 4-5 wks ago, when he had to have known that nothing short of a deus et mechina was going to save him. Waiting for Walsh to saw off the branch he had crawled out on was just ridiculous. This three day, front page, mea culpa, just labels him for the drama queen he has proven to be.

I sincerely hope he doesn't further embarass himself by going into that clubhouse and trying to apologize to anyone without a witness present.

The timing of the apology almost makes me think that Tomase and the Herald were actually hoping and praying that Walsh would deliver a Hail Mary and produce, or at least claim to have fimed, that walk-through tape in order for them to save their butts. When Goodell reported what was delivered to him prior to his interview with Walsh, I think they were still holding out hope for a Walsh bombshell. And only then did they issue the half-hearted apology - followed the next day by Massorotti's blasting of Patriot fans.

My question to Tomase and the Herald is this: if you knew your February 2nd story was without merit and not based on facts, then why did you wait until after Walsh met with Goodell to offer the apology? Was it perhaps because you knew he was a disgruntled former employee holding a grudge against the operation that fired him, and maybe he would lie in order to get you off the hook?

If the Herald wanted a scoop, they should have ran the apology during the Walsh - Goodell interview while everybody was watching those videos . . .
