I find Tom Curren's honesty refreshing but I also find Steve Burton's assessment of Curran and similar media elites even more refreshing.
These professional jock sniffs actually think they're above other people in any way????
Hilarious!! ;)

Yeah I heard them, I couldn't beleive I was hearing it. If it weren't for the fans they wouldn't have a cushy job.

feelings mutual, i'm sure.

Re: Tom Curren - Most mediots don't like fans

This stuff is borderline unbelievable. These guys need a f'in reality check.

What would that reality check be? Unfortunately for us, they can hide behind an ammendment when they're wrong.

I sort of understand that. As a sports journalist you really shouldn't just be a fan or a homer but that's what the fans expect of you. There are plenty of local journalists who go too far in bing fans of the team they cover and even more that go overboard in slamming every move they make. If I were a journalist I'd get annoyed with the fans too.

Curran used to get drunk and post on KFFL. I didn't believe it was him, because of the questionable spelling, but I was wrong.

If their dislike begins and ends with the fans who ***** about their team's standing in the weekly power rankings, then I see no problem with that - but it doesn't change the fact that it's the reporter's job to show the fans why. Unfortunately, many don't do that very well (or at all).

The problem is that there isn't really such a thing as a "sports journalist" anymore. Pretty much all of them do Op-Ed pieces now so they have to expect that they're opinions will get criticized by fans and the team. The difference is the team is less vocal about it.

Re: Tom Curren - Most mediots don't like fans

There has been plenty of journalists who were not homers and had the respect of the home crowd. What has pushed this topic is the bad journalism of a local writer. Everyone has already posted rebuttals to "why my article was in the best intentions" and evidently the local writers don't seem to get why everyone is pissed, therefore we must be idiots. Maybe these local writers should inquire as to why the Red Sox players and fans were also pissed. You would think this writer would offer an apology in his original piece, but no, that was an afterthought. Get this, he thinks he's still going to cover the Patriots. Boston has always been a tough town to play for, now with the advent of blogs, it appears your going to have to be a major league journalist also, and rightfully so.

To what are you referring? Where's the link?

Re: Tom Curren - Most mediots don't like fans

The thing that most of these guys forget is that the sport is about entertainment.

I don't want to hear people go o sensationalist good cop-bad cop rants because that's an insult t my intelligence.

Nor do I need them to pretend they are investigative journalists who are trying to uncover every single misdeed. This is sport. There are a lot more seedy things going on in the real world with real world consequences.

I'm just fine if a reporter is a homer, but that doesn't mean he can't be a critic of management decisions, of the players, etc. It's entertainment. This isn't a political beat.

Occasionally, some things happen that need to be addressed: Kiam's Olson incident, Orthwein selling the club, drugs, contract issues, etc. I'm fine with investigative journalism there. But mostly we just have sensationalized crud coming from the media.

Definitely a good point. They take themselves way too seriously. They aren't Woodward and Bernstein, they're covering an industry that people watch to entertain themselves on Sundays. It's not life or death and yet some of these people think they are talking about serious issues of national importance. They're just as pathetic and gossipy as the E! channel but they're appealing to a different demographic so they think it's real life and not just entertainment.

They tell us that they are only giving us what we want, we're just to stupid to realize we want it. That's the rationale behind the attitude. When we call them on it, we're wrong because they're right - they know us better than we know ourselves. We want to know about all the screwups, we need to know about all the screwups, and god damn it they will tell us about them whether we appreciate it or not.

Their problem is this week the story is about them screwing up, and they don't really want to talk/hear about it because it makes them uncomfortable. So just like their subjects and the fans who follow them for entertainment, they are lashing out at their critics claiming if you aren't one of them you just can't know enough to form a coherent opinion.

What a bunch of dedicated, smarter than the rest of us, guys. We idiot fans have been saying that about their coverage of a dynasty team for several years now. Of course they blame Bill for their lack of understanding as opposed to looking in the mirror at the guy who can't or won't take the time and make the effort or display the discretion necessary to establish access because hey, I got competition and a deadline.

The super smarter Curran (or Tom E. Curran as he prefers), who always shines when paired with a couple of unsavvy mediot morons like Pete and Steve, spoke at length about how the Patriots had been victimized by the media in all this from start to finish. However, when it came time to divide the blame pie he concluded that the guy he knows and likes who was the nexsus of the more significantly damaging 100 days of victimization over an unsubstantiated rumor was somehow not responsible nor should he in any way be held accountable because jeez, he was just doing his job and he made a mistake in sentance structure. LOL

I really wish Glenn had not decided to go MIA for a couple of days this week. Because he would have at least made Tom look as moronic as he seems to think his readership is. It's human nature to not want to hear the bad news, and sports mediots are all too human - just like the rest of us. They were all down with punishing Bill and this organization and it's fan base to varying degrees. They just can't get down with punishing one of their own.

Re: Tom Curren - Most mediots don't like fans

It all seems so linear: Players hate reporters, reporters hate fans.

One thing the mediots may not have wanted to happen which certainly, in my case and I am sure many others, has now happened...

Fans hate reporters.....

There are very few that I trust or believe now. I think they are lower than pond scum.

Ultimately, that cannot be good for the reporter or their profession.
I will not read their papers, buy their books or care what they have to say.

If they had only stayed objective and reported facts or stated opinion backed up with knowledge and truth, their credibility would not have totally eroded.

Re: Tom Curran - Most mediots don't like fans

Same here. To think I used to enjoy reading ESPN or listening to pregame shows. And sports talk radio.

Never again. NEVER.

Re: Tom Curran - Most mediots don't like fans

Most fans don't like the media, so who really cares if some writer doesn't like his audience. That's why message boards and blogs are killing the newspapers. They may be just as biased. They may be wrong more often. They pass on more false information.

However, they are rapid responders. They don't insult their audience. They don't hide their bias. They (mostly) admit to their mistakes. They are vetted almost instantly, and they are run by people who are more likely to be genuinely friendly to the home team.

Funny how they buy that as an explanation but dont but BB's misinterpreted the rules explanation.
These guys want it both ways.

And, if they were in California, the new ruling would allow them to have just that....
