CBS' Jim Nantz: Herald's LIEgate story X-factor in Pats' SB loss?

omg rly?? I'm pretty much shocked that it took this long for it to occur to anyone.

God bless Nantz. But let's keep perspective here.

He's the CBS guy who will be telecasting at least 4-6 times from a barcalounger in Bob Kraft's brand new CBS Scene at Gillette.

That being said, after watching that a second time, he makes a very solid, fundamental point.

That Jim Nantz sticks out like a sore thumb doesn't he??
Nantz is the 1 in the 100/1 anti-Patriot/pro-Patriot mediot ratio.
It's a lonely job but somebody's gotta do it. :D Thanks Jim!

I found the comparison to the Duke Lacrosse team very significant.

By Sunday, will Arlen Specter be Mike Nifong?

:rofl::rofl::rocker: Mike Nifong

Except for the fact that, in spite of it all, we had that game won, until an amazing Giants drive and some extreme near misses (the Manning near sack/scramble!).

I don't see the value in pinning that loss on external factors other than creating some weird lie to make us feel better about it.

Actually Jonathan Kraft made mention of this on WEEI today, saying that he felt that on the Saturday before the Super Bowl, the film and scouting staff had much better things to be doing than to be huddled with the Patriots brass and their lawyers confirming that they were not involved in the taping of the Rams walk through.

Did that detract from their game preparation? I don't think anyone would assert it helped.

But isn't the game plan already in place by Saturday? Of course those resources might have picked something else up on film, but there's no guarantee. External locii of control are not the Patriots' way. :)

I sure as hell don't think it helped, and I sure as hell believe it had an impact. This said, I sure as hell don't believe that it was the reason why we lost that game. That game was lost on the field by an O-Line that couldn't stop the QB rush to save its life.

I disagree. I think the "lie" is that the Herald's story and subsequent firestorm had no effect on the outcome of the game. That lie makes some people better able to rationalize the outcome. Reality is much more uncomfortable.

The material point here is that maybe one of the reasons everything looked so sloppy and out of focus was the distraction. Hence resulting in a lackluster, often confused-looking effort.

The Patriots will never admit it because they just wouldn't stoop to that level. That's for crying whiners like the Chargers, et al. But do I believe it had an effect? Oh, HELL yes.

I distinctly remember the morning of the SB, Senator Arlen Specter on live with Mike and Mike saying he was going to call Tom Brady into his committee later THAT WEEK to answer questions.

THAT was the jump the shark moment.

I agree....I think Kraft should sue the cryptkeeper!!!!!

I will continue to say this: Bill Belichick almost never gets out-coached or outprepared. In the biggest game of the season, the team looked lost scheme-wise, and some terrible decisions were made. In addition, it appeared as though both sides of the ball got destroyed--without adjustment--for three full quarters.

The story certainly didn't help, that much we know. Whether it hurt is debatable, but just remember that after the fact people were asking if the best coach in the business had suddenly lost his touch.

There have been 4 big pre-game distractions in the last 20 years. The team that it happened to has lost all 4 games. The Pats are the only team where the distraction was fabricated.

XXIII - Stanley Wilson smokin crack night before game. Bengals offense ineffective and lose.

XXXIII - E.Robinson trying to get a little some some night before game. He plays horribly and
Falcons get blown out.

XXXVII - B.Robbins hits Tijuana. Forgets about game. Raiders play awful lose to Bucs.

XLII - Pats spend last 3 days defending themselves to the world. Play worse game of the year and lose. Scored 37 pts on Giants field 1 month earlier. 14 on neutral field indoors.

Yes, I remember that too. I also remember us speculating on if that threat would distract Brady. I imagine it did. :(

Man, I don't ever want to relive that day again. From waking up and seeing the FLOOD of Walsh crap to this site crashing that night, it was just a bad day all over.

Harsh but true ... how to cut your nose off to spite your face.

What I got out of just watching the segment on NFLN was that Nance gets it, and it troubles and saddens him, and as he listened to him even Eisen looked uncomfortable. He was indicting the sports media. In their rush to gain a competitive advantage they are breaking all their own longstanding and well reasoned rules. Gee, the same thing they eviscerated BB for... Nance articulated something I was thinking earlier today, how the problem is compounded because as each one reports others feel compelled to immediately add layers based on that report. By the time you find out the original report was unfounded, it's too late to peel back those layers and put the proverbial genie back in the bottle. And potentially reputations if not lives are on some level irreparably damaged. He cited the Duke players as one example. And to what end, only so some mediot could be first and others could quickly add their two cents. He doesn't know what the answer is either because how can you enforce/police the rules short of endless slander and libel suits. Schefter seemed to be more willing to write it off to society as it is.

I was listening to Felger late this afternoon, as he flip flopped around on the fence, and at one point I was so incensed because he was making a case that Walsh's story rang true because he got promoted to a scout after that Superbowl. Only that's not true. Pioli stated several weeks ago that Walsh's move out of the video department to scouting was a lateral move. He remained in an entry level position, just assigned to another department where instead of taping games and practices he was editing footing packages for college players actual scouts were following. They are lazy and careless. They report second hand information and can't even get that right because they are too consumed with getting their poorly reasoned snap judgement on the record so some other half baked mediot can reference it.
