Patriots bringing in Samkon Gado for a tryout

I guess this doesn't rate high as news, but at least it involves something other than the off-field crap:

An NFL source tells me running back Samkon Gado has a tryout scheduled with the Patriots. Gado was a restricted free agent the Dolphins declined to bring back. He’s one of those depth backs who produces whenever he gets a shot. It’s not difficult to see him — or new Jets back Jesse Chatman, for that matter — haunting the Dolphins this year.

Seems to me like Samkon and/or Kevin Jones both would be good guys hanging around just in case on of guys we rely on goes down. I don't think many on here would argue that Maroney, Morris, and Faulk healthy all year would be better than Samkon or Jones instead of one of them but the truth is our running game would be hurt if any of the three got hurt as evident last year when Morris went down. Bring one or both of the guys in for TC to make sure the injury doesn't happen then and hopefully we are trying to hide one of them either on the pup or inactive until the injuries start to mount and hopefullt they don't start to mount.

I don't know if I would take a healthy Morris over a healthy Jones. Jones is coming off of an ACL injury, though, so it's not even a given he could be the type of back he was a few years ago (he's also had several other injuries to start his career).

I probably agree that a pre ACL Jones is better than Morris but the ACL injury happened and on that note I will take somone who has already fit in with us and who does not have the ACL. Though we know little of Morris' injury and wether that could have a lasting effect.

With the bringing in Gado & Jones, looks to me like BB wants to have a legit RB to rely on if Maroney & Morris are both hurt.

Evans can't get it done on his own and neither can Faulk. I'd be all for keeping an extra back in KJ, or just replacing Evans with one of them.

Really? I know Jones is miles better in the short yardage, Passing game, give Maroney a breather, and spot start in case of injury facets of the game. I don't know whether he's as good a run blocker as Evans because he's never been asked to, but I haven't been overwhelmingly impressed with Evans in that role regardless. If Jones was going to be 90% for this year, I'd take him and cut Evans in a heartbeat, and let Eckel or a large special teamer handle blocking FB duties. However, I don't foresee Jones being that healthy for 2008.

I don't know about his attitude though. Heath never complains about not getting the ball enough. Would Kevin? Based on his history with Tatum Bell in Detroit, possibly.

Evans is more like Morris. A fast fullback.

I actually think Kevin Jones is still a quality back. It's too bad he got stuck behind that offensive line last year.

I don't think Evans is going anywhere. The coaches definitely trust him, too, or else he wouldn't have been asked to split out wide in the Chargers game to convert a crucial 3rd-down.

I think that Jones could possibly be the next version of Kevin Faulk as long as Jones can pick up blitzes. Jones is good out of the back-field as a receiver and a runner. And it would breath life into his career.

I was referring to position....whether you think Evans is good or not would be another argument. But if you want to replace evans I'ld suggest looking for guys who could replace him and not guys that would replace Faulk, Morris, or Maroney.

KJ definitely wouldn't fill Evans position, but pretty sure Gado is the same size as Evans. I could be wrong though.

Gado is a bit smaller. According to ESPN.com, he's 5'10"/226.

The 2 RBs on whom I would be keeping an eye are Jones and Musa Smith. Smith, if healthy, could be a less-talented version of Dillon and Antowain Smith for us. Sammy Morris, if healthy, is a better-talented version of Musa Smith.
