Shaughnessy on state of media
05.15.08 | Commenting on the Boston Herald story about the walk-through tape, Dan Shaughnessy says "I'm glad that's not me."But, Shaughnessy says the essence of story -- the Pats cheated -- is true. Shaughnessy says that the media has become too positive. And he sort of rips all the bloggers, radio callers etc. -- he basically says there are too many opinions out there and you don't learn anything. Just to be clear, Shaughnessy didn't go Bissinger by any means. He just critiques the media for not being insightful enough

Boston Herald's Massarotti on Pats
05.15.08 | Boston Herald columnis Tony Massarotti says his and the paper's relationship with the Patriots is strained. Massarotti implied the Patriots didn't like him before all of this started. Massarotti admits the media often plays favorites. But still, the Herald has to try its best to do the best they can covering the team. Dan wonders if the Herald can still really go after this story. But Massarotti says if the Herald got something on the Pats, they'd still publish it. I think you have to give Massarotti a lot of credit. He admits the Herald made a mistake, but that doesn't mean there's no story. | Andrew Perloff

i wonder why dan patrick always has boston haters on his show. i have heard him say anything +ve about the pats or boston sports, always picks against them.

Re: Shaugnessy and masz on dan patrick show

I'm not sure its just a "hate boston" or "hate the Pats" thing. I remember in the 90s when the Cowboys were winning often, there were a ton of stories about their players and shady dealings go on in Big D. I think its a "who's on top that we can tear down" type of thing that the entire media engages in.

No point having interviews about the Detroit Lions or Current 49ers team. No one would listen.

Re: Shaugnessy and masz on dan patrick show

To answer your question- being from outside Boston, I can tell you that most of the people around the country either hate Bostonians or cannot give a damn about Boston sports. Not my opinion, but the opinion of everyone that doesn't live in Boston.

No sh*t.

I actually find that more people Hate NY sports much more than they do Boston. NY fans are the worst, well almost, Philly fans are pretty bad too.

But, by "media" Shaughnessy was referring to bloggers, and the like. He was referring to us.

The stuff I read here is 10x more insightful than the likes of Shaugnessy.

I like his articles, actually. I think most of them are good, except that single one-liner crud.

The problem is that not once has any media member put any of the Spygate in context. I have never read an article which measured the actual rules in the rules book, the release of the memo, against not only what the Patriots did, but also created a timeline that measured it against known videotape violations such as those of the Jets and Dolphins.

That would have been insightful.

Why has nobody in Shaughnessy's mainstream media done that?

People on this site have done it, why can't they?

Oh yeah, I can't argue that. Especially in Florida where we are trained to despise anything NY because of the decrepit that come down here to die.

OK, so let me get this straight. A media outlet reports that someone on the Globe staff raped a co-worker. Some whisper he had odd curly hair. Come to find out a woman was approached on Morrisey Blvd. by a man in a clown suit and orange wig who made lewd advances. She ran away without contacting authorities, who only located her after interviewing every employee in the building in an effort to ascertain if the incident ever occurred. She insists she never told anyone she was raped, let alone by a curly haired co-worker. I guess the essense of the story is still the same though...

Should have asked him why the relationship is strained, and whether there was and is good reason for it to be. Should have discussed the mistake Tony made late last night while they were at it...

So the media is too positive and it's critics - particularly those who disagree with that characterization - should all just shut up and listen to the self appointed smart ass elitist mediots who are all too willing to identify themselves to us nitwits. OK chief. When you were the only option we had no choice. As the options expanded I didn't see any of you elite journalists passing up the opportunity to line your pockets with the dirty money that talk radio and TV and websites threw at you to spew venom or ball wash depending on your mood or the ratings period. I didn't see anyone resisting the impulse to say things they once wouldn't have printed or inject themselves into the story, something that was formerly a cardinal sin in journalism. What saw was guys increasingly more combative and willing to print what they formerly had not been willing to commit to print ten years ago and increasingly determined to become a focal point of their own stories. Shank got his nickname perfecting that tactic. All under the guise of doing what they had to do to remain competitive in an unregulated new environment where they felt disadvangated by archaeic professional ethics. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Give me a freakin' break. Your battle was never with us or the teams you cover so much as it was with each other and a changing industry. Do us all a favor, go beat each other up. Call us when you've reached some sort of civilized accommodation.
But hey, whatever, it's not your fault. It never is. I've never seen a more self serving bunch of excuse making enablers than media members circlling the wagons at the first hint of media criticism. LOL

Re: Shaugnessy and masz on dan patrick show

MO, are you saying the story isn't about Dan? No wonder he can't take these positive, modern times....

The sports media world's all about making a buck off of someone else's misery.
