More NY Times crap about the Patriots...

Because the "anonymous" NFL Exec. quoted in the NY Times pieces won't give up his seat before his contract with the Indianapolis Colts is up.

Beat me to it :)

Remember the days when the New York Times was the gold standard for journalism. How they great has fallen.

The New York Times apparently have decided to forego any objectivity and just turn this whole incident into a witchhunt against the Patriots.

At least this article confirms a lot of what we have thought for years. The rules committee have long been trying to find ways to put in rules to stop the Patriots.

The Competition Committee changed the bump and run rule

because the Colts complained about the Patriots defensive backs

especially Ty Law. Also, the rule banning contracts of more than

four years for players drafted after the first round was because of

players like Eugene Wilson and Deon Branch. In both cases, the Patriots

were operating legally according to the rules.

I'm sure that the majority of complaints come from unhappy coaches

like Tony Dungee and Jack Del Rio.

One thing that upsets me is the amount of information leaked by

the NFL office. Not only did the Patriots tape end up at Fox,

the information for the Times article also came from confidential NFL

information. Goodell should have a gag rule for all his employees.

Keep in mind that was Gene Upshaw's doing, but, again, Upshaw hates the Pats too, for some reason. . . .

Grain of salt

If you waste your time reading the times you ought to have your spray shield on because all they do is toss manure.....

It is pretty simple to identify who the NYTimes' "anonymous" source.

There are only 8 members of the competition committee.

Co-Chair: Rich McKay (Atlanta Falcons)
Co-Chair: Jeff Fisher (Tennessee Titans)

- Matt Millen (Detroit Lions)
- Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals)
- John Mara (New York Giants)
- Ozzie Newsome (Baltimore Ravens)
- Bill Polian (Indianapolis Colts)
- Mark Richardson (Carolina Panthers)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_competition_committee

Matt Millen isn't in a position to criticize anyone. He is also, despite his failings as a GM, too good of a guy to whine like this to the press without attaching his name to it.

Allen, the Atlanta President is now tied at the hip with the Pats through the Dimitroff hiring. Dmitroff has made clear on WEEI that the organizations are very tight.

The Richardson family has long been a friend of Kraft, and Charlie Weis and Jon Fox are very tight. Plus, Carolina is in no position to complain about anything after their '03 steroid scandal in the SB year.

John Mara is too classy a man to snipe at the Pats, particularly following his Sb victory and with a long history of mutual respect with BB.

Newsome cut his teeth in the NFL on BB's staff, and the organizations remain close.

That leaves Fisher, Polian and Lewis.

Fisher is the man who ordered the hit on Harrison, that took out his knee prior to the playoffs.

Lewis' shenanigans with criminal players are too numerous to mention. He was the one who "anonymously" sniped at AD in Borges' column last spring.

Polian is self-explanatory.

I have believed, since the story broke last September, that there was a cadre of Patriot enemies on the Competition committee, who were driving this issue with Goodell.

The sneering, visceral hatred revealed in Dungy's recent classless comments show where the hate is flowing from. He simply can't control himself. The hatred coming from the man is at odds with his image, and reveals the true face of that organization.

The Colts, Polian and Dungy have been driving this agenda from within the competition committee.

The love fest between Dungy and Fisher when the Colts threw their final game last season was evidence of an unusual complicity and mutual understanding between those 2 organizations, strange for division competitors.

That is a great point you raise. We don't even know the nature of the complaints leveled against them. The majority of the complaints could simply be legitimate on field competition concerns like the two you cited above and have nothing to do with nefarious activities. That was purposely not addressed by the article.

While I do think the suspects you identify are the core problem, I also think that a guy like Millen who came out of nowhere (the media...) to become a team GM and then sucked almost unimaginably at it would be a prime league media source for these kinds of tidbits. Ditto McKay (Allen?) who is now a figurehead president in Atlanta who was only able to retain that position because it meant he would remain on the CC. With the hiring of Dimitroff (and on the heels of the Vick scandal) he went on functional life support and needs to re-position himself (via the media support) to be considered for another position within the league (either as GM of another team or in the league offices).

There will be some turnover on this committee in the forseeable future. Kraft needs to push for either Pioli or Jonathan to pull up a seat at the committee table.

BTW NY Times isn't the only one spouting the BB suspension line. There's an idiot on ESPN now calling for BB's head. He's mad that BB won coach of the year, and says that BB should have been suspended last year! *rolls eyes* The show is the "sports reporters."

The Sports Reports part on Spygate was a lovefest of all who hate the Patriots. Not one mention of the fact that the Patriots have admitted using tape since 2000 and all agreed that Belichick needed to be suspended for a year (some said he should have been suspended last year).

Albom said the Goodell has "painted himself into a corner since he was asked for just the walk-though tape."

Here's a little break from all the negative NYT/ESPN crap....

Just a little reminder that the Pats aren't evil....

If all they were is a rules advisory committee it would be one thing. But the way Goodell has involved them in this matter went far beyond the scope of how this committee was intended to function. If in fact they are utilized as a souding board for a league commissioner, and as such are made privy to his deliberations and the evidence he is compiling, they they should be required to sign a confidentiality agreement that stipulates that if they reveal any information relating to league matters without the express written consent of the commissioner, they're off the committee and face possible suspension from the league. If Goodell can put those kinds of constraints on owners, GM's and HC's regarding their stipulating to annual team conduct going forward, then he can certainly put restraints on the Competition Committee. He routinely puts gag orders on teams, for instance when they are at odds with each other or the Union on a matter.

One of the problems is this league has long been run like a fraternity, is it matters as much who you know as what you know. The union operates much the same way. Both are long overdue for a culture change before they end up destroying what has somehow managed in spite of that to evolve into a multi billion dollar industry.

He means ESPN Sports Reporters...anybody that saw it must have the same sickening feeling that I do.

We are going to get screwed Tuesday....I am realy afraid they suspend BB and then you will see the cry for subsequent asterisk designation.

They do not care about truth & fact.

Thanks.......sorry about that post. That show is awful. They keep banging the drum.

Re: More NY Times Crap about the Patriots..

I keep asking myself, why doesn't the Boston Globe come out with an article about the national bias on this issue and cite example such as the NY Times and just cut them to shreds?

And I honestly don't think the fact they are owned by the same company should be a factor. That is not supposed to be the nature of journalism.

Their non-response speaks volumes as to the real world nature of journalism vs what its "nature is supposed to be."

Seems like most credible media sources are taking the approach that without a Ram walk through tape, there is nothing new and there should be no further penalties. Even Gary Myers over at the New York Daily News has taken that stance, and he's been one of the most outspoken anti-Patriot writers for the nine months. Only espn (led by Mike Fish) and the new york times (led by Greg Bishop) continue with the biased, slanted reporting. This is Bishop's third article in four days, and each of them has been anti-Patriots.

It's also interesting to note that Bishop's being fed some private, internal exclusive information from an NFL source. First it was the list of tapes Walsh had and what was on them; now it's information from the competition committee. I don't think it is a coincidence. Somebody within the NFL (most likely Polian, in my opinion) is using Bishop to further his own agenda. Though knowledgeable readers have figured out that the New York Times has lowered it's standards dramatically over recent years, most casual fans only read their own city's paper, and still hold the Times in very high regard - which is probably why this source is using them for the mud slinging.

The story has been a ratings bonanza for the media for nine months. Since there really was nothing more to report, it's time for all the Fish's, Bishop's and Easterbrooks' to go find a new story.

If Goodell had any power he would demand to know who this leak of internal NFL deliberations came from. This type of back dealing should not be tolerated by the commisioner. Another example of how totally out of control of the NFL head offices he really is.

Surely you jest that he doesn't know who is leaking the information. If it isn't Goodell himself it is someone with his permission. Do you remember him saying he was going to investigate the leak of the Pats tape to Fox TV. He must have had a good laugh when he went home and talked with his wife, the Fox TV employee. I guess the information is being leaked by bigfoot and Elvis.

That was part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and is unrelated to the Competition Committee.

It's really too bad the NFL didn't do an investigation when the Colts were caught piping in sound to drown out the Patriots signals last year. Instead they invented a story about it being a technical glitch. One that never occurred anywhere else.

By NFL you mean Goodell. He is an expert at the non-investigation investigation.
