to request that all investigations into the videogate case regarding the Patriots GO THROUGH him in Pennsylvania? What IS HIS AUTHORITY IN THIS CASE? And.....why does Roger Goodell jump like a chimpanzee when Sphincter comes calling? I find it very hard to understand how this despicable jackbag can take time away from attending to the issues and concerns of his constituents in Pennsylvania, (a job that the TAXPAYERS are PAYING HIM TO DO), so that he can lead a one man witch hunt against the Patriots. What is his MOTIVE here? IS it the interest of Comcast that he has fueling him? IF that is determined to be true......He should be forced to resign, and the Pats should file suit against him. Every talking stiff keeps saying "Well it isn't over until Arlene Sphincter says it is.....and he will want to talk to Goodell" What gives Sphincter the right to meddle in the issues of the National Football league and IMPOSE HIS WILL? WHO THE FU(K IS ARLENE SPHINCTER? He is simply a Senator from Penn.....I do not get how he can make everyone jump through hoops like this. If I were Goodell I would tell him that "I WAS HANDLING THE SITUATION.....and to go F' off"

And.....like someone on here said "If he is so concerned about what is going on in the world of sports, WHERE WAS HE DURING THE STEROID SCANDAL IN BASEBALL? Yes indeed.....where was his outcry then?

This guy is a pathetic, self serving jacka$$ that is simply trying to make some money off of parlaying the interests of Comcast.......while NEGLECTING HIS DUTIES AS A US SENATOR watching over the interests of his constituents in PA, and the interests of citizens of the US........can anyone tell me why this guy holds such power over Goodell.......?

Re: What authority does Arlene Sphincter have.....

He's been authorized by Comcast.

Re: What authority does Arlene Sphincter have.....

Hopefully his next opponent uses this against him. Wasting government dollars because he is a sore loser.

Re: What authority does Arlene Sphincter have.....

Spector has ZERO authority! It beats me why Walsh and Goddell are agreeing to speak to him. The way the media is playing this out, it seems as though the Patriots committed a crime. The next thing you know, Eric Mangini is testifiying against the Patriots in a courtroom. But seriously, if I were Goddell, I would tell Spector to worry about more important issues in Pennyslvania and politely tell him to **** OFF!

He is a Eagle fan and football fan, that does not give him any right what so ever to do or did what he has done.. Its time to move on and out on crapgate..

specter will have the authority if the republicans win the senate in 10' but hopefully he'll lose his seat. Right now, Pat Leahy is in charge of the senate judiciary committee. he's another useless senator but he's from new england so maybe we have a leg up.

He's not running again.

There was a good guy...well, never mind. If anyone wants to talk more, the political forum is at the bottom of the main menu.

Re: What authority does Arlene Sphincter have.....

not anymore he doesnt...

the NFL has made thigns public, they have sued in a court of law, Roger has no need to play nice with Arlen any longer...and i doubt he will continue the game

the NFL wont be paying any heed to Arlen from this point forward...bank on it

Are you being sarcastic? Unless your committing a crime, no senator (democrat or Republican) has the authority to take control over "spygate". End of story. If that were the case, then our government would already take control over gas prices and we would all be happy.

Re: What authority does Arlene Sphincter have.....

The only authority that Spector has is the ability to call for a hearing for reconsideration of the NFL's limited anti trust exemption for the purpose of negotiating broadcast contracts. This is what has the Commissioner's Office jerking around like a puppy on a leash. My personal feelings are that Spector is over-stepping and misusing his authority by trying to be a bully. Just my 2 cents.

The only authority Specter has is the ability to get his mug on the front-page because of who he is. Matt Walsh is only speaking to him because he wants to extend his "15 minutes". Hopefully, the meeting will go by, the press conference will happen, and Goodell will grow a sack and finally put this whole thing to bed and we can all anticipate the upcoming season.

I tend to agree with you. Let's hope Roger Dodger comes out and shuts the door on this for good.

Spector is posturing, his largest campaign contributor is a law firm that works for Comcast and the second is Comcast themselves if memory serves me correctly. He has to do everything he can to make it hard for the NFL, isn't this the 3rd or 4th time he's gone after the NFL because of the antitrust exemption ? Which is in place to allow the NFL to bargain the TV rights for all teams, so teams with weak viewership can still make some decent money. So in essence, it's too protect teams that wouldn't attract a large viewership from having serious money problems.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think it's ok for the NFL to be allowed to do that, it's better for the league and protects the teams with the weaker incomes.

Spector is a fool if he thinks nobody realizes what he's up too, he's just playing to the crowd and Comcast and it's an abuse of his position. Trust me PA needs him to focus on getting Fed money and programs for the state, it's in a downward spiral and the local politicians have no clue what their doing.

Personally, he has no authority. But as the ranking Republican on a powerful Senate subcomittee (Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights), he has the potential to do some damage and for that reason the NFL can't tell him to f--- off.

The hammer, of course, would be to repeal the NFL's anti-trust exemption, but that would take the vote of both houses of Congress & a presidential signature (or congressional veto override ). There's too many football fans in America and too many legislators that pretend to be football fans for that to go down. But, with the consent of just the comittee, he could hold hearings and issue subpoenas, making the NFL brass sweat a bit. Mostly, though, I think the NFL knows that he won't do much and the path of least resistance is to appease him where they can. They all know how to play the game.

Sorry to disagree with you, but the way the senate and its committees work, the ranking minority member can't do diddly squat without the consent of the chairman Leahy from Vermont and ranking democrat Kennedy. Neither of whom are going to sign on to Spector's witchhunt or are in the pocket of Comcast. Spector is all talk and no power.

All you need to know about Arlen Specter and these schenanigans...Super Bowl morning, he was on ESPN Radio and said that stealing signals was sports' equivilent to stealing automobiles.

Think about that.

All that seperates a minority leader from a majority leader is one election. I'm sure the NFL doesn't want to piss him off and then have him come into power.

The political reality is that the Democratic majority will be even larger next time and Spector will be long gone by the next time there is a Republican majority. I would say the person you don't want to upset is Leahy.
