One tape of the eight (Miami) is labeled "OFF Signals". Just when you thought it was over...

Sorry I didn't realize it was in other threads as well.

The funny thing about ESPN having headlines like this on their main page is the fact that they will most certainly say something on Sportscenter like "Spygate just won't die" when in reality, they are the only people keeping the story going by adding controversy to every headline and every story.

Pats were exhonerfied from stealing offensive signals.

Wake me up when you have proof they videotaped special teams signals.

Them and the rest of the country's football fans whose blood is boiling and whose mouths are watering at the prospect of additional punishment.

(esp divisonal opponent, steelers, and chargers fans)

Honestly it'd be ludicrous for the media to not jump all over this, that's what the media does.

The Dolphins under Saban were caught taping Brady's audibles and the NFL never did anything... of course Belichick didn't go crying like a baby to the front office... but still, if they didn't investigate then I'm not sure why it should be an issue now.

Because that would be hypocritical of the Commissioner's office and he'd never do that

God I hope so........ We'd be complete douche-bags to just have taped defensive signals.

I'm curious.....how do you steal offensive signals when they are trasmitted by radio to qb directly? I understand that when qb's call audible, may be there are some signalling going on but.....can't that be usually found out just watching game tape? Besides, I thought it was pretty common knowledge other teams' audible signals are constantly 'stolen'. I remember hearing that bunch of phin's players admitting that they knew what Pats' audible calls were. Sorry if this was asked in other thread.

Miami bought an "enhanced audio" version of a game tape from a third party back in 2006.

Throughout 2007, mikes were aimed at Tom Brady so that you could clearly hear his cadence on pretty much every tape. It was like "miked up" but he didn't even have a mike. Just the networks having fun I guess.

God, 37-1 sounds SO much better than 18-1...

It's actually pretty simple. When the communication systems go down, you have to get the signals into the game. There are always hand signals as a backup as well as players who will bring in the play if needed. I don't think anything will come of it but it isn't unusual.

I just sent this to Fish:

Mr. Fish,

I’m sorry, but now you’re just getting nasty. In the middle of your article, as a ‘throwaway line’ it seems, you have a comment by the NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, which reads “’The rule which the Patriots violated was the policy that prohibits use of equipment for the taping of offensive or defense signals. I know there've been references to defensive signals, which is more logical. But let us look at the tapes and verify what is on there.”’ Alright…so that’s the beginning and end of the article right there to any unbiased journalist. They have yet to review the tapes; you have not reviewed—and probably will never review—the tapes. All you have to go off of is one label on one tape: ‘OFF Signals’. That’s it.

Now I understand, you have to make this a story because you’ve been cramming it down our throats for the past 4 months. But please, this is getting ridiculous. You are absolutely assaulting a team that has already been penalized for their transgressions. Aiello spelled it out for you, in plain English: ‘The rule which the Patriots violated was the policy that prohibits use of equipment for the taping of offensive or defensive signals.’ I don’t know what your agenda is—whether it’s to cover your ass, maybe you just hate the Patriots because they’re such a successful franchise, maybe something I’m not even thinking of—but your slant is absurd. The First Amendment protects you from any liability in these cases, but you have to realize that you’re swaying the opinions of millions of people with your articles. Do you think most people are rational enough and have the time to really look into the facts of all of this? They see a headline on ESPN.com which reads ‘Tapes reveal Pats stole offensive signals’, then they read an article that has such a biased slant, and they take that as gospel. Well, quite frankly I’d rather trust this guy (two-time Super Bowl Champion head coach…and notice some other names that he brings into the discussion); this was an interview done on WFAN back in September, and yet it never gets play because it isn’t ‘sexy’ news. And yet you, Easterbrook, Specter, et al, continue to condemn the Patriots as an immoral, cheating bunch of scoundrels. Well guess what? They’re hardly alone:

Q: How about the spying thing Jimmy. You’re a coach does that bother you what Belichick did?

JJ: Oh please. I’ve said it on our show. Eighteen years ago a scout for the Chiefs told me what they did, and he said what you need to do is just take your camera and you go and zoom in on the signal caller and that way you can sync it up. The problem is that if they’re not on the press box side you can’t do it from the press box, you have to do it from the sideline. This was 18 years ago.

Q: You think the NFL came down too hard on them?

JJ: No, no, I said it on the show. He was wrong for doing it for the simple reason that the league knew this was going on not just in New England but around the league. And the league sent out the memorandum to all of the teams saying you cannot do this. And so that’s when Bill Belichick was wrong. After he got the memorandum saying don’t do it any more, he did it.

Q: Did you ever steal signals?

JJ: Oh in a heartbeat, yeah. Yes I did.

Q: Via video, Jimmy? Or no?

JJ: Oh yeah, I did it with video and so did a lot of other teams in the league. Just to make sure that you could study it and take your time, because you’re going to play the other team the second time around. But a lot of coaches did it, this was commonplace.

Q: But did you do it by taping the signal caller?

JJ: Yeah.

Q: Oh you did.

JJ: That’s what I’m saying. I was saying one of Marty Schottenheimer’s scouts, Mark Hatley, who has passed away now, Mark told me that’s how they did it, and Howard Mudd their offensive line coach with Kansas City, who now coaches for Tony Dungy, he was the best in the entire league at stealing signals.

Q: Where’d you put your guy who was videotaping? Where was he?

JJ: My guy was up with my camera crew in the press box. So you’d just put an extra camera up with your camera crew in the press box who zoomed in on the signal callers. That’s the best way to do it, but anyway you can’t always do that because the press box camera crew might be on the same side as the opposing team. If they’re on the same side as the opposing team that’s when you need to do it from the sideline.

It's 12 pm here. Wake me up when you have the news that BB steals one of ESPN news anchor's wives.

If it's Easterbrook's or Fish's then more power to him!

I pick up two things in the mediots approach to the Walsh event.

One, they're gonna start harping on the "Offensive" signal stealing and argue that BB only admitted to "Defensive" signal stealing. Kind of like in the Seinfeld episode when George makes up the story about Art Vanderlay, who's in the Import Export business but is getting out of the Import business to focus on the Exports.

Two, the more rational among them are shifting the topic away from any more penalties to Belichick's HOF vote. Clearly, there will be a movement to deny him first ballot election, as absurd as that is.

I love the Seinfeld reference. lol

The idea that any signals were "stolen" is foolish. The signals can be seen by everyone. It's been widely accepted that what the Pats did was in plain view as well. They've served their penalty now move on!

I have to admit this quote :

"We don't know [about attempts to steal offensive signals] yet because we haven't looked at the tapes," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday before the league had completed its review of the new evidence. "All we have is the list supplied last night [by Walsh's attorney]. One of them is labeled 'OFF signals.' None of the others are listed that way. Let us look at the tapes and we'll have more to say about that."

Doesn't make me feel too good. IMO taping signals is taping signals but Aiello seems to acknowledge a separation in terms of wrongdoing between the two in that quote.

Mort seems to think the NFL's statement back in September covered both offense or defense but the only reference I found to that was the NFL saying both are illegal, not that the original punishment covered the possibility of both. If anyone has such a statement I would love to see it. It's inconceivable that would cause another significant penalty but I am a little nervous about it.

If the punishment for 10 years of taping defensive signals is worth a 1st round pick & a million $ then I can't imagine one tape of offensive signals warranting a suspension.

I need to quit thinking about this until Tuesday . . . the only concern is if Jolly Roger said to Belichick "did you ever tape offensive signals" and Belichick said "no". Then it could get sticky.

But that's all stuff I made up, just a possibility, a worst case possibility.
