Jimmy Johnson admits to same "spying" Pats did [old news]

I don't know if anybody else has heard this, but Micheal Holley just reported on WEEI that Jimmy johnson said.. (and I paraphrase, because I haven't found the quote online yet) that he videotaped signals the exact same way Bellichick did on his way to his own 2 superbowl titles with the Cowboys.

I found another article online (dating back to september) where he said he was taught how to do it while working as an assistant with the K.C. Chiefs

"After seeing the footage, former Cowboys and Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson - who works as a host on Fox's pregame show - said on the show: "This is exactly how I was told to do it 18 years ago by a Kansas City Chiefs scout. I tried it, but I didn't think it helped us."

I find it funny that he names Howard Mudd and Marty Schottenheimer since they now work (colts for Mudd) and recently worked with the strong possibility for a return (Schotzy) and there is no heat on either of them. I think if all the info being realeased about other teams spying was given equal time, it would all fizzle out because they would find that everybody did it and you can't punish the entire league.

Yeah they just talked about it on Dale & Holley. It's amazing how such a seemingly big statement by Jimmy, the public is largely ignorant of. Ask the average fan, and they believe that only the Patriots taped, and there is only evidence of the Patriots taping. They have no idea about this. It just goes to show you that this story is just what ESPN and national media choose to report on.

A caller on WEEI brought this up to prove that this type of thing was, and in my opinion still is, going on in the NFL. The caller wanted to say that this was a witchhunt vs. the Pats.

ESPN is mad because BB doesn't kiss their butts and he put Tom Jackson in his place. Most fans do not like the Pats because of their success.

This team is built around a star and a coach that tend to keep their mouths shut, not be great quotes for the media. Somehow, that has turned into BB being smug. I don't get it.

A definition for smug from dictionary.com:

1. contentedly confident of one's ability, superiority, or correctness; complacent.

I would certainly not consider BB to be content. What successful coach is ever content?

Complacent? means self-satisfied; please with your situation. Huh? BB is always trying to get better. Which videotaping signals would prove, correct?

The "experts" and ignorant fans need to get over themselves and worry about their own business.

Regardless, it’s still interesting to note how commonplace former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson feels the use of cameras is by NFL teams. He admits he used them to steal signs all the time.

Q: How about the spying thing Jimmy. You’re a coach does that bother you what Belichick did?

JJ: Oh please. I’ve said it on our show. Eighteen years ago a scout for the Chiefs told me what they did, and he said what you need to do is just take your camera and you go and zoom in on the signal caller and that way you can sync it up. The problem is that if they’re not on the press box side you can’t do it from the press box, you have to do it from the sideline. This was 18 years ago.

Q: You think the NFL came down too hard on them?

JJ: No, no, I said it on the show. He was wrong for doing it for the simple reason that the league knew this was going on not just in New England but around the league. And the league sent out the memorandum to all of the teams saying you cannot do this. And so that’s when Bill Belichick was wrong. After he got the memorandum saying don’t do it any more, he did it.

Q: Did you ever steal signals?

JJ: Oh in a heartbeat, yeah. Yes I did.

Q: Via video, Jimmy? Or no?

JJ: Oh yeah, I did it with video and so did a lot of other teams in the league. Just to make sure that you could study it and take your time, because you’re going to play the other team the second time around. But a lot of coaches did it, this was commonplace.

Q: But did you do it by taping the signal caller?

JJ: Yeah.

Q: Oh you did.

JJ: That’s what I’m saying. I was saying one of Marty Schottenheimer’s scouts, Mark Hatley, who has passed away now, Mark told me that’s how they did it, and Howard Mudd their offensive line coach with Kansas City, who now coaches for Tony Dungy, he was the best in the entire league at stealing signals.

Q: Where’d you put your guy who was videotaping? Where was he?

JJ: My guy was up with my camera crew in the press box. So you’d just put an extra camera up with your camera crew in the press box who zoomed in on the signal callers. That’s the best way to do it, but anyway you can’t always do that because the press box camera crew might be on the same side as the opposing team. If they’re on the same side as the opposing team that’s when you need to do it from the sideline.

What an awesome article. I guarantee Goodell never read it before handing down his punishment. So lamar Hunt, of the eponymous Lamar Hunt AFC Championship trophy, HOF Lamar Hunt, was the most notorious spy of the AFL, and was fined for photographing opponent practices and hiring spies to inflitrate opposing teams sidelines? And Papa Bear Halas was the most notorious spy of the NFL, bugging opposing lockerrooms? And George Allen was his "super spy" with the Bears and #1 disciple? And notebooks were stolen, phones were bugged, practices infliltrated...

and nobody lost a draft pick? All they ever got was a quiet fine?

What a shocker.

Who cares if it's old news? It still comes as a surprise to a ton of folks and never seems to sink in.

Besides, old news is the whole point! It why JJ admitted to it, along with others, and said he didn't invent it.

Old news is why the damn NFL specifically decided to try to outlaw it. It's why NFL coordinaters shield their faces everytime they talk like school-girls telling secrets.

And yet, it never sinks in.

That's all it would take, and for anyone else that still believed the Pats 'cheated' (as opposed what they actually did: committed a rules infraction by filming in a restricted area) then they'd have to be labeled biased. There's just no other conclusion to be drawn.

Absolutely. Of course, you have to keep in mind that people are generally topical. The folks that actually delved into it out of interest or the folks with a handle on the actual workings of things understand it.

The only reason this is still talked about is that people read headlines, not the story, essentially. At it's enough to make them OUTRAGED!
