Shouldn't the Patriots wait a little longer before giving away #91?

I saw Bo Ruud was wearing Marquise Hill's old number in rookie camp, thought that would be a number that would go unused for a while. I know he may not have it as his regular season number (if he makes the team), but still I thought they'd hold off on this for at least one more year.

I know what you mean. But I think they are pressed with numbers, given that they correspond to the player's position. They are already giving away duplicates for the JAGs.

Agreed, It was very sad that he died. However, it's time to move on. I feel that his number being unused for the rest of last season was a good show of respect. It's now time to turn the page though.

It was a true tragedy Marquise died,but with the utmost respect and not trying to be ignorant you know he was not exactly Hall of Fame material prior to his death so I don't see the problem with it.

I don't see why his on-field production should have anything to do with it, fact is he was a part of the Patriots community, and his memory deserves more respect than it's getting.

I don't think it is a matter of retiring his number as someone pointed out he didn't do enough on the field for that. But how do you think Jarvis is going to feel when he looks at someone else in his best friends uni. They should have just not used it until the guys who played with him are gone.

Although I don't think it is disrepectful to anyone for it to be used, it may have been a courtesy to some guys not to use it.

I think they have already taken it away from Ruud. He is supposed to be wearing a number in the 40's now.

It was either a oversight made by the equipment manager, or someone from the team noticed it and asked for it to be taken away. Hell, at least until Ruud makes the team.

I thought these were assigned. If not, I agree with your statement. In the end though, it's just a number. Those who think of Hill will continue to do so regardless of what number anyone is wearing. Simply identifying him by his number seems to limit his memory to only the football field, which we all would agree shouldn't the case.

- His memory got respect. The kept the jersey out of circulation for a year, put his number on their helmets, and dedicated the season to him. Keeping the number out again because you feel he hasn't gotten enough respect is pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

- I don't think anybody should be able to speak for the players in this case. How do you know what his emotions are? All I'm saying is that if they withold for another year then they might as well retire it which isn't a possibility because he didn't do much on the field.

- Which part was inhumne? The "who cares?" part, the "it sucks that the guy died" part, or the statement about retiring his jersey? I'm sorry if you're feelings are easily hurt but I didn't make that statement to be inhumane. I was merely offering my opinion on the matter. I also stated that I tried to sugar coat it but doing so would not get my point across so I left it as is.

Ruud may very well been unaware that was Hills number or for that matter that any NFL players died last year other than Taylor. Unless you follow the Pats closely or the the NFL extremely closely, you have never heard of Hill.

If I was a rookie I would pick another number and not just out of respect more out of superstition, that isn't exactly a lucky number.

My personal feeling is it should be retired. I realize Hill isn't going to the HOF, but still he is no only Patriots player to die while active.

Although the Jets didn't formally retire Dennis Byrd's number, it has not been reissued since he suffered his career-ending injury in 1992. And he was HOF material either.

I think this is as good a sign as any that Ruud won't be making the team.

You make absolutely no friggin sense. Big surprise there. Holding off for a year from giving out his jersey would NOT be retiring it. It would be doing so out of respect for the guy. Also, since you missed it, BB said that Marquise was instrumental in their preparations for many games, particularly against the Colts since Marquise could emulate Dwight Freeney very well.

So, while Marquise stats may not justify anything, he was behind 3 other DEs who are all starting quality. Its very hard to get playing time when your team is that stacked at a position.
