Rookie jersey numbers
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 2, 2008 09:55 AM

Here are the jersey numbers being worn by rookies at this week's minicamp:

QB Kevin O'Connell -- 5
WR Matthew Slater -- 18
CB Terrence Wheatley -- 22
CB Jonathan Wilhite -- 24
S Mark Dillard -- 30
RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis -- 42
OLB Vince Redd -- 47
ILB Gary Guyton -- 48
ILB Jerod Mayo -- 51
NT Henry Smith -- 62 (blue)
C Ryan Wendell -- 62 (white)
DE Casey Tyler -- 64
DT Carlos Feliciano -- 69
OT Josh Coffman -- 76 (white)
DL Chris Norwell -- 76 (blue)
TE Jonathan Stupar -- 85
ILB Bo Ruud -- 91
OLB Shawn Crable -- 98

There are other rookies scheduled to be here on a tryout basis as well.

51 is a good number for Mayo. Most LBs wearing that number have a reputation for being nasty.

51 is a good number for jerod, especially if he wants to market himself and pick up endorsements in the near future. having a "attractive" number is important in that regard.

#51 is TIGHT ! Sorry, someone had to say it !

#98 for Crabel - Isn't that number more for DEs or NT than LB?

No, 90s are fairly common. I'm more surprised by 47 for Redd... I didn't know LBs could wear 40s. Maybe they can't and we just ran out for now though.

T.W. sporting Assante's old number, confident he is...

what does wearing someones old # have to do with being confident? Wihitle has Ty Law's #...you think hes confident he'll end up like Law?

Wilhite in 24......does that mean no Ty?

You must not watch a lot of preseason football.

Bingo!

The same when Colvin's number went to Hobson

Its almost guaranteed when a former player is gone he is not coming back if that Jersey number is now used by another player.

I can't remember it ever happening in the NFL - Does anyone?

Name me some NE linebackers who wore #90-#99?

I can't remember any off hand - or at least players that were not a bigger part of the team than just TC fodder.

Tully Banta-Cain worn 95, IIRC.

Sometimes the player gets to choose, sometimes not.

For example, Gostkowski mentioned that when he arrived in Foxboro, they gave him the choice of 3 or 5.

So are these the #'s they will be wearing in the regular season also or just for training camp? The reason I ask is cause i remember Moss wearing #6 during training camp then once the regular season started he was wearing #81.
