Interesting perspective...

The Pats started the draft with picks in rounds 1-2-3-3.

They used draft picks in rounds 1-2-3-3.

Meanwhile, a #2 pick was added for next year AND they got the guy they wanted all along cheaper then it would have cost to stay at 7.

It's just awesome to watch this team operate... isn't it?

They dominate the league in every facet of the game. While still true, you can almost forget that quote from BB (para: "We want our #1 player to be better than their #1 player, our #15 player to be better than their #15 player,...our #53 player to be better than their #53 player")... and just modify it to be that we want EVERYONE that works for/with the team to be better than their peer group at same/similiar job... BB, and his whole squad, is just a study in unbelievable leadership.... makes me proud to watch them all year (and I need some of that pride after my first 26 years or so of being a fan).

It's not even fair. It's like fishing with dynamite.

I was going to post on this too.

- they got who they wanted in round 1, at a lower salary cap point

- presumably they got who they wanted in round 2, given how long it took them to make the selection

- they definitely got who they wanted with the higher 3rd-rounder, as they were on the phone with Crable about taking him at 69, then made the SD trade, then still got him at 78

- it sure sounds like they hit their target with O'Connell at 94

- in round 4, Wilhite sounds like like a keeper

- and as a bonus, they walk away with a next-year 2nd, which will be awesome to have starting out that draft. With that pick, they'll be able to move way up in round 1 if they want, to the 13-18 range where they do so well. Or keep it, or trade down into the 3rd round, perhaps picking up a 2010 2nd or 3rd. It's a tremendous luxury to have the extra pick in the first 2 1/2 rounds

A follow up question to your analysis which isn't very far fetched.

Who do you think will have a better 2nd round pick next year the Chargers or the Saints?

I would think the Saints.

if you agree wouldn't they have been better off trying to get the 2 next year from the saints rather than a 3 this year which helped us turn a 3 into a 2 next year, which people say are equal???

I know you lose some draft day flexibility but they say hindsight is 20/20.

I don't think I agree here. SD is good, so you'd expect that pick to be a late round 2, as well as our own late round 2. I'd hope that we are picking deep in round 1 (say pick 32!!).

Unless you are trading both 2's and your #1 to move up in round 1, I don't see us getting into the teens any other way.

Is that what you intended?

This makes sense except you've forgotten some of the loose change in those deals.

We gave #7 and our 5th rounder to NO for #10 and their 3rd.
We game Oakland's 3rd to SD for the 2009 2nd plus a 5th.

So, if you want to make the comparison, I think the fair match is the SD 2nd plus Slater versus the NO 2nd. If Slater can play, it seems like a pretty even swap to me.

The equation people like to put forth here is that a pick in 'this' years draft is one round higher than that same pick in next year's draft. In other words, under the "1 year= 1 round" rubric, the Patriots lost value by trading a high 3rd this year for a low 2nd next year, because a low 2nd a year out = a low 3rd that same year.

Well, either the Pats don't think it's that much of a drop-off, or they simply didn't care, for whatever reason; after all, they were willing to risk missing out on Crable to make that trade. I can't really think of any other explanations.

I can, but I really don't want to.

Would any of you guys accepted the trade with the Saints for thr 10th pick?
This was when the Pats were on the clock and New Orleans offered them their 2nd this year (#40) and next years #1 for the 10th pick?

Personally, I wouldn't have done it. Chances are the Saints pick next year will be probably 18 or higher. It warrants alot of consideration, but I'd say No! Although you people could of had your guy Quentin Groves and 2 #1's next year.

Bill Kuharich, VP, Chiefs, was on Sirius yesterday and said that they never thought Dorsey would be on the board at #5, and were going to trade down to #7 if a certain player (C. Long??) was on the board at #5, and then make the trade from #7 to #10 with the Saints.

I know the Chiefs called the Patriots when they were on the clock at 5.

I think I know where you're going with this, but if that's what they were concerned about--and as I've pointed out before, if they expect that to happen, then they have been acting like complete and utter idiots for quite some time--why not take the Saints up on their offer of a 2009 1st + their 2008 1st? [The Pats could then have traded the two seconds to get back into the bottom of the first round.]

Was this on the All-Access special?

Yes it was just a quick blurb. I don't think there was ever a thought of making the trade. The only one that they should what they really concerned was the Saints trade, but Ernie Adamas made a good point.

Interesting when it comes to the draft, it's basically just Belichick, Pioli, and Adams who make the call. Nick Casario some were off to a side table with a few others, but Belichick, Pioli and Adams were the only people talking during pick time.

Let's say we are picking 32nd next year. If we're trying to trade up from #32, our low 3rd rounder (#96) would get us at least to #24. As evidence, twice in the past few years, including the time NE moved up to snag Daniel Graham, the #32 team has gotten all the way up to #21 by giving up a 3rd rounder + a low (5th-6th) rounder.

So if we're instead talking about dangling a low 2nd rounder (say #58 or so), there's no question that gets you up into the teens.

This is a very interesting subject. I'd like to play devil's advocate to all the happy feelings here. I really do appreciate how Belichick/Pioli run there draft board, and now I understand how they do it. It's actually quite amazing ! Despite our growing hatred for ESPN, they do give props to the Pats by saying the Pats and Colts are the best at running their drafts. That being said, here's where I'll play devil's advocate. Let's look at last year's draft, the Pats had two #1 picks, and traded their late first round pick for SF's '08 #1 pick. It turned out to be a very high pick, and we were all excited. But, with that pick (after trading to 10), we drafted Jerod Mayo, who is an absolute great choice, but who's to say the guy we could have drafted last year, David Harris, isn't better than Mayo ?

David Harris had an absolute incredible rookie season, leading the Jets in tackles, despite only starting 9 games. he also had 5 sacks ! This guy is an absolute beast. Though I love the Mayo pick, who's to say he will be as good as Harris ? Who's to say that maybe, just maybe, Harris doesn't make a difference in the SB ? We will never know, but there could have been a different outcome if Harris was in our lineup. Now a year later, we have to see if Mayo could make a difference. Not saying he can't, but it sure makes ya think.
